    Hybrid model predictive control for freeway traffic using discrete speed limit signals

    HYCON2 Show day - Traffic modeling, Estimation and Control 13/05/2014 GrenobleIn this paper, two hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC) approaches for freeway traffic control are proposed considering variable speed limits (VSL) as discrete variables as in current real world implementations. These discrete characteristics of the speed limits values and some necessary constraints for the actual operation of VSL are usually underestimated in the literature, so we propose a way to include them using a macroscopic traffic model within an MPC framework. For obtaining discrete signals, the MPC controller has to solve a highly non-linear optimization problem, including mixed-integer variables. Since solving such a problem is complex and difficult to execute in real-time, we propose some methods to obtain reasonable control actions in a limited computation time. The first two methods (-exhaustive and -genetic discretization) consist of first relaxing the discrete constraints for the VSL inputs; and then, based on this continuous solution and using a genetic or an exhaustive algorithm, to find discrete solutions within a distance of the continuous solution that provide a good performance. The second class of methods split the problem in a continuous optimization for the ramp metering signals and in a discrete optimization for speed limits. The speed limits optimization, which is much more time-consuming than the ramp metering one, is solved by a genetic or an exhaustive algorithm in communication with a non-linear solver for the ramp metering.     Proposed shunt rounding technique for large-scale security constrained loss minimization

    The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright @ 2010 IEEE.Optimal reactive power flow applications often model large numbers of discrete shunt devices as continuous variables, which are rounded to their nearest discrete value at the final iteration. This can degrade optimality. This paper presents novel methods based on probabilistic and adaptive threshold approaches that can extend existing security constrained optimal reactive power flow methods to effectively solve large-scale network problems involving discrete shunt devices. Loss reduction solutions from the proposed techniques were compared to solutions from the mixed integer nonlinear mathematical programming algorithm (MINLP) using modified IEEE standard networks up to 118 buses. The proposed techniques were also applied to practical large-scale network models of Great Britain. The results show that the proposed techniques can achieve improved loss minimization solutions when compared to the standard rounding method.This work was supported in part by the National Grid and in part by the EPSRC.     Modification of an asynchronous dexterous hand movement decoder for hardware implementation

    One of the goals of modern prosthetics research is to provide natural, neurologically driven control of a prosthetic device, preferably in a portable format. Previously, an algorithm for asynchronously decoding individuated finger and wrist movements from recordings of neural activity in the primary motor cortex was developed by Aggarwal et al. and implemented in software. The first objective of this work was to determine what effect simplifying Aggarwal\u27s algorithm by using linear Artificial neural networks instead of nonlinear ones would have on movement detection and classification accuracy. The simplified algorithm developed in this work was demonstrated to achieve movement detection and classification accuracies of 99.7%, 89.9%, and 95.3% for an individuated movement decoding task across three subjects using neural recordings from 80 neurons. In comparison, the original algorithm demonstrated accuracies of 96.2%, 90.5%, and 99.8% for the same task and subjects using neural recordings from 40 neurons. Additionally, the simplified algorithm was demonstrated to have a detection and classification accuracy of 80.5% for a combined movement task, whereas the original algorithm achieved accuracy of 92.5%. Even though a greater input space size was required for the linear decoder, the computational intensity was reduced with a mean accuracy loss in the individuated movement task of only 0.53%. However, the 12% loss of accuracy observed in the combined movement task is considered unacceptable and suggests that the simplified algorithm is not appropriate for this task. The second objective of this work was to create a digital hardware implementation of the simplified linear artificial neural network version of Aggarwal\u27s algorithm. A scalable, fully parallel architecture was designed for implementation on a Xilinx Virtex-4 FX60 FPGA. This implementation could be realized with an input dimension of up to 60 neurons on this FPGA, although computations were performed on the order of 104 times faster than was necessary for realtime operation, indicating that there is an opportunity to reduce hardware size in exchange for computational speed. This work is an important exploration into the eventual goal of incorporating a hardware movement decoder in a prosthetic device and demonstrates that a hardware implementation is feasible using currently available technology

    Approximation algorithms for wavelet transform coding of data streams

    This paper addresses the problem of finding a B-term wavelet representation of a given discrete function f∈ℜnf \in \real^n whose distance from f is minimized. The problem is well understood when we seek to minimize the Euclidean distance between f and its representation. The first known algorithms for finding provably approximate representations minimizing general ℓp\ell_p distances (including ℓ∞\ell_\infty) under a wide variety of compactly supported wavelet bases are presented in this paper. For the Haar basis, a polynomial time approximation scheme is demonstrated. These algorithms are applicable in the one-pass sublinear-space data stream model of computation. They generalize naturally to multiple dimensions and weighted norms. A universal representation that provides a provable approximation guarantee under all p-norms simultaneously; and the first approximation algorithms for bit-budget versions of the problem, known as adaptive quantization, are also presented. Further, it is shown that the algorithms presented here can be used to select a basis from a tree-structured dictionary of bases and find a B-term representation of the given function that provably approximates its best dictionary-basis representation.Comment: Added a universal representation that provides a provable approximation guarantee under all p-norms simultaneousl

    Efficient hybrid algorithms to solve mixed discrete-continuous optimization problems: A comparative study

    Purpose: – In real world cases, it is common to encounter mixed discrete-continuous problems where some or all of the variables may take only discrete values. To solve these non-linear optimization problems, it is very time-consuming in use of finite element methods. The purpose of this paper is to study the efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithms for the mixed discrete-continuous optimization, and compares it with the performance of Genetic Algorithms (GA). Design/methodology/approach: – In this paper, the enhanced multipoint approximation method (MAM) is utilized to reduce the original nonlinear optimization problem to a sequence of approximations. Then, the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) technique is applied to find the continuous solution. Following that, the implementation of discrete capability into the MAM is developed to solve the mixed discrete-continuous optimization problems. Findings: – The efficiency and rate of convergence of the developed hybrid algorithms outperforming GA are examined by six detailed case studies in the ten-bar planar truss problem and the superiority of the Hooke-Jeeves assisted MAM algorithm over the other two hybrid algorithms and GAs is concluded. Originality/value: – The authors propose three efficient hybrid algorithms: the rounding-off, the coordinate search, and the Hooke-Jeeves search assisted MAMs, to solve nonlinear mixed discrete-continuous optimization problems. Implementations include the development of new procedures for sampling discrete points, the modification of the trust region adaptation strategy, and strategies for solving mix optimization problems. To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of metamodel construction, regressors φ defined in this paper can have the form in common with the empirical formulation of the problems in many engineering subjects
