    ABSTRACT Act-based theories of content hold that propositions are identical to acts of predication that we perform in thought and talk. To undergo an occurrent thought with a particular content is just to perform the act of predication that individuates that content. But identifying the content of a thought with the performance of an act of predication makes it difficult to explain the intentionality of bouletic mental activity, like wanting and desiring. In this paper, I argue that this difficulty is insurmountable: the contents of occurrent desires cannot be determined by acts of predication

    Collaborative decision making in complex work settings: a process of managing inter dependencies

    There exists disparity between the conceptualization and occurrence of Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) in everyday work activities of complex work settings. Current notions in the field of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) based on studies of decision making in groups typically portray CDM as an isolated event in which multiple personnel jointly undertake decision making. In the real world, however, decisions are made during work performance and interlaced with other processes and activities. Moreover, the complex work setting is a cooperative arrangement in which decision making is distributed. This research aims to alleviate the disparity by investigating how people in a complex working environment make decisions collaboratively. The original contribution to knowledge made by this thesis is the theory of CDM as a process of managing interdependencies. Field-studies conducted in an airport to examine the way CDM is undertaken during Air Traffic Control operations inform theory development. The study takes a qualitative approach and is guided by Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM). The findings of this research indicate that undertaking decision making in the cooperative arrangement of complex work settings requires managing the distributions and interconnections inherent in this setup. In addition, participation and contribution of personnel in decision making is found to be structured by the dependencies between their activities. These findings form the central focus of the theory leading to the depiction of CDM as a process of managing interdependencies. The theory presented in this thesis clarifies and extends existing views by explicating the differentiated process of CDM in the cooperative arrangement of a complex work setting. Based on this a new definition of CDM is formulated. In addition, a conceptual framework of ten parameters is derived to serve as a tool for analysing CDM taking place in a particular work setting. Application of this framework is demonstrated by analysing an aircraft accident report to draw insights about the occurrence of CDM in this setting

    From social networks to emergency operation centers: A semantic visualization approach

    Social networks are commonly used by citizens as a communication channel for sharing their messages about a crisis situation and by emergency operation centers as a source of information for improving their situation awareness. However, to utilize this source of information, emergency operators and decision makers have to deal with large and unstructured data, the content, reliability, quality, and relevance of which may vary greatly. In this paper, to address this challenge, we propose a visual analytics solution that filters and visualizes relevant information extracted from Twitter. The tool offers multiple visualizations to provide emergency operators with different points of view for exploring the data in order to gain a better understanding of the situation and take informed courses of action. We analyzed the scope of the problem through an exploratory study in which 20 practitioners answered questions about the integration of social networks in the emergency management process. This study inspired the design of a visualization tool, which was evaluated in a controlled experiment to assess its effectiveness for exploring spatial and temporal data. During the experiment, we asked 12 participants to perform 5 tasks related to data exploration and fill a questionnaire about their experience using the tool. One of the most interesting results obtained from the evaluation concerns the effectiveness of combining several visualization techniques to support different strategies for solving a problem and making decisions.This work was supported by the project PACE grant funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitivity [TIN2016-77690-R]

    The effects of user assistance systems on user perception and behavior

    The rapid development of information technology (IT) is changing how people approach and interact with IT systems (Maedche et al. 2016). IT systems can increasingly support people in performing ever more complex tasks (Vtyurina and Fourney 2018). However, people's cognitive abilities have not evolved as quickly as technology (Maedche et al. 2016). Thus, different external factors (e.g., complexity or uncertainty) and internal conditions (e.g., cognitive load or stress) reduce decision quality (Acciarini et al. 2021; Caputo 2013; Hilbert 2012). User-assistance systems (UASs) can help to compensate for human weaknesses and cope with new challenges. UASs aim to improve the user's cognition and capabilities, benefiting individuals, organizations, and society. To achieve this goal, UASs collect, prepare, aggregate, analyze information, and communicate results according to user preferences (Maedche et al. 2019). This support can relieve users and improve the quality of decision-making. Using UASs offers many benefits but requires successful interaction between the user and the UAS. However, this interaction introduces social and technical challenges, such as loss of control or reduced explainability, which can affect user trust and willingness to use the UAS (Maedche et al. 2019). To realize the benefits, UASs must be developed based on an understanding and incorporation of users' needs. Users and UASs are part of a socio-technical system to complete a specific task (Maedche et al. 2019). To create a benefit from the interaction, it is necessary to understand the interaction within the socio-technical system, i.e., the interaction between the user, UAS, and task, and to align the different components. For this reason, this dissertation aims to extend the existing knowledge on UAS design by better understanding the effects and mechanisms during the interaction between UASs and users in different application contexts. Therefore, theory and findings from different disciplines are combined and new theoretical knowledge is derived. In addition, data is collected and analyzed to validate the new theoretical knowledge empirically. The findings can be used to reduce adaptation barriers and realize a positive outcome. Overall this dissertation addresses the four classes of UASs presented by Maedche et al. (2016): basic UASs, interactive UASs, intelligent UASs, and anticipating UASs. First, this dissertation contributes to understanding how users interact with basic UASs. Basic UASs do not process contextual information and interact little with the user (Maedche et al. 2016). This behavior makes basic UASs suitable for application contexts, such as social media, where little interaction is desired. Social media is primarily used for entertainment and focuses on content consumption (Moravec et al. 2018). As a result, social media has become an essential source of news but also a target for fake news, with negative consequences for individuals and society (Clarke et al. 2021; Laato et al. 2020). Thus, this thesis presents two approaches to how basic UASs can be used to reduce the negative influence of fake news. Firstly, basic UASs can provide interventions by warning users of questionable content and providing verified information but the order in which the intervention elements are displayed influences the fake news perception. The intervention elements should be displayed after the fake news story to achieve an efficient intervention. Secondly, basic UASs can provide social norms to motivate users to report fake news and thereby stop the spread of fake news. However, social norms should be used carefully, as they can backfire and reduce the willingness to report fake news. Second, this dissertation contributes to understanding how users interact with interactive UASs. Interactive UASs incorporate limited information from the application context but focus on close interaction with the user to achieve a specific goal or behavior (Maedche et al. 2016). Typical goals include more physical activity, a healthier diet, and less tobacco and alcohol consumption to prevent disease and premature death (World Health Organization 2020). To increase goal achievement, previous researchers often utilize digital human representations (DHRs) such as avatars and embodied agents to form a socio-technical relationship between the user and the interactive UAS (Kim and Sundar 2012a; Pfeuffer et al. 2019). However, understanding how the design features of an interactive UAS affect the interaction with the user is crucial, as each design feature has a distinct impact on the user's perception. Based on existing knowledge, this thesis highlights the most widely used design features and analyzes their effects on behavior. The findings reveal important implications for future interactive UAS design. Third, this dissertation contributes to understanding how users interact with intelligent UASs. Intelligent UASs prioritize processing user and contextual information to adapt to the user's needs rather than focusing on an intensive interaction with the user (Maedche et al. 2016). Thus, intelligent UASs with emotional intelligence can provide people with task-oriented and emotional support, making them ideal for situations where interpersonal relationships are neglected, such as crowd working. Crowd workers frequently work independently without any significant interactions with other people (Jäger et al. 2019). In crowd work environments, traditional leader-employee relationships are usually not established, which can have a negative impact on employee motivation and performance (Cavazotte et al. 2012). Thus, this thesis examines the impact of an intelligent UAS with leadership and emotional capabilities on employee performance and enjoyment. The leadership capabilities of the intelligent UAS lead to an increase in enjoyment but a decrease in performance. The emotional capabilities of the intelligent UAS reduce the stimulating effect of leadership characteristics. Fourth, this dissertation contributes to understanding how users interact with anticipating UASs. Anticipating UASs are intelligent and interactive, providing users with task-related and emotional stimuli (Maedche et al. 2016). They also have advanced communication interfaces and can adapt to current situations and predict future events (Knote et al. 2018). Because of these advanced capabilities anticipating UASs enable collaborative work settings and often use anthropomorphic design cues to make the interaction more intuitive and comfortable (André et al. 2019). However, these anthropomorphic design cues can also raise expectations too high, leading to disappointment and rejection if they are not met (Bartneck et al. 2009; Mori 1970). To create a successful collaborative relationship between anticipating UASs and users, it is important to understand the impact of anthropomorphic design cues on the interaction and decision-making processes. This dissertation presents a theoretical model that explains the interaction between anthropomorphic anticipating UASs and users and an experimental procedure for empirical evaluation. The experiment design lays the groundwork for empirically testing the theoretical model in future research. To sum up, this dissertation contributes to information systems knowledge by improving understanding of the interaction between UASs and users in different application contexts. It develops new theoretical knowledge based on previous research and empirically evaluates user behavior to explain and predict it. In addition, this dissertation generates new knowledge by prototypically developing UASs and provides new insights for different classes of UASs. These insights can be used by researchers and practitioners to design more user-centric UASs and realize their potential benefits

    What's the Deal?: Fichte's Closed Commercial State, Trump, and Economic Nationalism

    Starting out from an analysis of the "Art of the Deal," this paper seeks to understand Trump's "deal-making" as a form of life under capitalism organized around the paradoxical desire to simultaneously "be the game" and be the "biggest winner"--- In this way, Trump exemplifies a modern pathological form of existence whose proximate roots can be found in German idealism, and perhaps most clearly in Fichte's Closed Commercial State. Here Fichte proposes a wage to end all wagers; a monetary operation that would put the entire world on the path to world peace and economic justice. Fichte's economic nationalism---- world peace is only possible by the complete closure of the state as commercial entity--- is the very opposite of what is now spoken under that name; and yet the desire to "play the game" and "master it" at the same time offers a point of commonality. Beyond the scope of this paper lies the questions: is this paradoxical desire ultimately theology in origin? Is another relation to contingency possible

    Investigating business process elements: a journey from the field of Business Process Management to ontological analysis, and back

    Business process modelling languages (BPMLs) typically enable the representation of business processes via the creation of process models, which are constructed using the elements and graphical symbols of the BPML itself. Despite the wide literature on business process modelling languages, on the comparison between graphical components of different languages, on the development and enrichment of new and existing notations, and the numerous definitions of what a business process is, the BPM community still lacks a robust (ontological) characterisation of the elements involved in business process models and, even more importantly, of the very notion of business process. While some efforts have been done towards this direction, the majority of works in this area focuses on the analysis of the behavioural (control flow) aspects of process models only, thus neglecting other central modelling elements, such as those denoting process participants (e.g., data objects, actors), relationships among activities, goals, values, and so on. The overall purpose of this PhD thesis is to provide a systematic study of the elements that constitute a business process, based on ontological analysis, and to apply these results back to the Business Process Management field. The major contributions that were achieved in pursuing our overall purpose are: (i) a first comprehensive and systematic investigation of what constitutes a business process meta-model in literature, and a definition of what we call a literature-based business process meta-model starting from the different business process meta-models proposed in the literature; (ii) the ontological analysis of four business process elements (event, participant, relationship among activities, and goal), which were identified as missing or problematic in the literature and in the literature-based meta-model; (iii) the revision of the literature-based business process meta-model that incorporates the analysis of the four investigated business process elements - event, participant, relationship among activities and goal; and (iv) the definition and evaluation of a notation that enriches the relationships between activities by including the notions of occurrence dependences and rationales

    Hunting for \u27Paper Gangsters\u27: An Institutional Analysis of Intelligence-led Policing in a Canadian Context

    Contemporary police departments are facing immense pressure to preserve public safety while also remaining fiscally accountable. As a response to economic pressures, police services are turning to intelligence led policing (ILP). ILP promises ‘smarter’ and more efficient policing with the use of advanced technologies and data analysis for decision-making. The present study examines ILP implementation in one urban Canadian police department. Through in-depth interviews with fifteen patrol and middle-management members, fifty-five hours of observation, and an analysis of organizational documents, I examine how ILP reform has been understood and enacted by patrol officers on the ground. From this analysis, I uncover how officers’ perceptions and practices are loosely coupled from organizational claims surrounding ILP. I argue that this loose coupling allows the organization to acquire social legitimation while allowing patrol work to remain largely unchanged. Further, I argue that patrol officers’ perceptions and practices of ILP can perpetuate the policing of usual suspects and raise a number of concerns about implications of ‘intelligence’ practices involving citizens
