WHEN SHOULD FIRMS BE “OPEN”? THE MODERATING ROLE OF IT COMPETENCY IN INTER-ORGANIZATIONAL OPEN INNOVATION COLLABORATION
Open innovation has gained momentum in recent years. Prior research has shown the critical role of openness in understanding the inter-organizational collaboration process. However, existing studies largely focus on search openness instead of the openness in actual collaboration. In addition, it remains unclear how the new emerged organizational competencies on information technology will shift the role of openness in collaboration. In this study, we investigate the role of collaboration openness in open innovation collaboration and explore the moderating role of information technology competencies. Drawing on the theory of inter-organizational relationship and resource-based view, we examine the conditions under which firms should be “open” in the actual collaboration. We develop hypotheses on network uncertainty, collaboration openness and open innovation performance. The model also incorporates the moderating effects of competitive IT capability and IT intensity. The proposed hypotheses will be tested using firm-level survey and objective data. We also discuss our research method and expected implications
Investigating the impact of networking capability on firm innovation performance:using the resource-action-performance framework

The experience of successful firms has proven that one of the most important ways to promote co-learning and create successful networked innovations is the proper application of inter-organizational knowledge mechanisms. This study aims to use a resource-action-performance framework to open the black box on the relationship between networking capability and innovation performance. The research population embraces companies in the Iranian automotive industry.
Design/methodology/approach
Due to the latent nature of the variables studied, the required data are collected through a web-based cross-sectional survey. First, the content validity of the measurement tool is evaluated by experts. Then, a pre-test is conducted to assess the reliability of the measurement tool. All data are gathered by the Iranian Vehicle Manufacturers Association (IVMA) and Iranian Auto Parts Manufacturers Association (IAPMA) samples. The power analysis method and G*Power software are used to determine the sample size. Moreover, SmartPLS 3 and IBM SPSS 25 software are used for data analysis of the conceptual model and relating hypotheses.
Findings
The results of this study indicated that the relationships between networking capability, inter-organizational knowledge mechanisms and inter-organizational learning result in a self-reinforcing loop, with a marked impact on firm innovation performance.
Originality/value
Since there is little understanding of the interdependencies of networking capability, inter-organizational knowledge mechanisms, co-learning and their effect on firm innovation performance, most previous research studies have focused on only one or two of the above-mentioned variables. Thus, their cumulative effect has not examined yet. Looking at inter-organizational relationships from a network perspective and knowledge-based view (KBV), and to consider the simultaneous effect of knowledge mechanisms and learning as intermediary actions alongside, to consider the performance effect of the capability-building process, are the main advantages of this research
THE IMPACT OF OPEN INNOVATION PRACTICES AND MODERATING EFFECT OF INTER-ORGANIZATIONAL NETWORKS ON INNOVATION PERFORMANCE OF LARGE FIRMS IN SRI LANKA
Innovation plays a prominent role in the contemporary world. It brings novel products and services to the market while exploring new ways of production, distribution, marketing and impacts all other aspects of organizations including human behaviour through hard as well as soft methods. Open innovation has been introduced as a new paradigm in innovation management. This study examines the impact of open innovation on innovation performance of the listed companies in Sri Lanka with the moderating effect of inter-organizational networks. Open innovation practices have been recognized in this study in two folds - as outside-in open innovation and inside-out open innovation Data were collected through a survey among 165 top-level managers of listed companies in Sri Lanka. The sample was selected using purposive and snowballing sampling methods. After testing the validity and the reliability of the instrument and collected data, simple regression analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses. The study findings indicate that both outside-in open innovation and inside-out open innovation positively and significantly impact innovation performance.

The impact of open-border organization culture and employees' knowledge, attitudes, and rewards with regards to open innovation: an empirical study
Purpose: The objective of this paper is to fill a significant research gap in academic literature pertaining to Open Innovation. In order to do so, this paper empirically tests the impact of organizational culture, employees' knowledge, attitudes, and rewards as antecedents and mediators of Open Innovation adoption in organizations, facilitating a more thorough understanding by utilizing an empirical multi-level approach.
Design/methodology/approach: This paper analyses the results of the "Identification of Industrial Needs for Open Innovation Education in Europe" survey through a quantitative analysis using logistic regression models. This survey includes 528 employees working in 28 different industrial sectors in 37 countries, most of which are in Europe.
Findings: The results suggest a positive impact of organizational characteristics on the adoption of Open Innovation (i.e. including the adoption of outside-in and inside-out open innovation activities in participating organizations), showing that the openness of an organization's culture increases its likelihood of adopting an Open Innovation paradigm. More importantly, the results highlight the positive mediating effect of employees' knowledge and rewards on this relationship.
Practical implications: The proposed multi-level approach offers new insight into organizational knowledge. It enables the improvement of Open Innovation and Knowledge Management practices in organizations by assisting practitioners and academics in recognizing the relationship between organizational culture; employees' knowledge, attitudes, and rewards; and the adoption of the Open Innovation paradigm.
Social implications: This paper offers a possible explanation on why open-border cultures are more likely to have a successful open innovation adoption, by relating it to factors that advance in the presence of an open-border culture, such as active participation of OI relative departments in knowledge sourcing and knowledge exchange, and rewarding employees for open innovation activities.
Originality/value: This paper presents a new framework which links organizational culture to Open Innovation, moving on from merely examining culture in terms of its positive or negative impact on Open Innovation adoption. It contributes to research on the Open Innovation paradigm and Knowledge Management by highlighting the significance of antecedents and mediators from a multi-level perspective using multiple units of analysis. Most previous studies focus on a single unit of analysis
Knowledge pipeline in freight pipeline industry: competence- based model for open innovation
There is growing concern over the challenges for innovation in Freight Pipeline industry. Since the early works of Chesbrough a decade ago, we have learned a lot about the content, context and process of open innovation. However, much more research is needed in Freight Pipeline Industry. The reality is that few corporations have institutionalized open innovation practices in ways that have enabled substantial growth or industry leadership. Based on this, we pursue the following question: How does a firm’s integration into knowledge networks depend on its ability to manage knowledge? A competence-based model for freight pipeline organizations is analysed, this model should be understood by any organization in order to be successful in motivating professionals who carry out innovations and play a main role in collaborative knowledge creation processes. Leveraging Open-standard Interorganizational Information Systems for Process Adaptability and Alignment: An Empirical Analysis
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the value creation mechanisms of open-standard inter-organizational information system (OSIOS), which is a key technology to achieve Industry 4.0. Specifically, this study investigates how the internal assimilation and external diffusion of OSIOS help manufactures facilitate process adaptability and alignment in supply chain network.Design/methodology/approachA survey instrument was designed and administrated to collect data for this research. Using three-stage least squares estimation, the authors empirically tested a number of hypothesized relationships based on a sample of 308 manufacturing firms in China.FindingsThe results of the study show that OSIOS can perform as value creation mechanisms to enable process adaptability and alignment. In addition, the impact of OSIOS internal assimilation is inversely U-shaped where the positive effect on process adaptability will become negative after an extremum point is reached.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the existing literature by providing insights on how OSIOS can improve supply chain integration and thus promote the achievement of industry 4.0. By revealing a U-shaped relationship between OSIOS assimilation and process adaptability, this study fills previous research gap by advancing the understanding on the value creation mechanisms of information systems deployment
The moderating effect of brand orientation on inter-firm market orientation and performance
While prior research has shown that market and brand orientation
are key contributors to successful business performance, research to
date has not fully explored how inter firm collaboration for these two
key orientations can enhance business performance. The purpose of
the paper is to investigate the relationship between inter-firm market
and performance; to test for the moderating role of brand orientation
in that relationship. A total of 169 completed pairs of surveys were
collected of small and medium enterprises operating internationally
in a variety of industries in Switzerland. The results show that inter-firm
market and brand orientation are two antecedents of marketing and
financial performance. The impact of inter-firm market on marketing
and financial performance is significant when the brand orientation
is favorable. This study extends previous research by examining the
moderating role of brand orientation on inter firm market orientation,
which is important, especially for firms wanting to increase their brand
reputation by entering into partnerships with other firms. Further
research is indicated, to identify the key moderators of the driving
force of inter-firm market in relation to business performance and
the reason why maintaining a strong brand presence is important in
the international marketplace
Service innovation - lessons from modularization and open innovation - a new service value
The traditional manufacturing model of volume-variety influencing the conduct of business is not entirely representative of service-centric business. The latter has two key differences â it is much more end-user centric and individualistic in experience. The complex nature of service attributes also make it much more convoluted.
