    Towards Internet QoS Provisioning Based on Generic Distributed QoS Adaptive Routing Engine

    Increasing efficiency and quality demands of modern Internet technologies drive today’s network engineers to seek to provide quality of service (QoS). Internet QoS provisioning gives rise to several challenging issues. This paper introduces a generic distributed QoS adaptive routing engine (DQARE) architecture based on OSPFxQoS. The innovation of the proposed work in this paper is its undependability on the used QoS architectures and, moreover, splitting of the control strategy from data forwarding mechanisms, so we guarantee a set of absolute stable mechanisms on top of which Internet QoS can be built. DQARE architecture is furnished with three relevant traffic control schemes, namely, service differentiation, QoS routing, and traffic engineering. The main objective of this paper is to (i) provide a general configuration guideline for service differentiation, (ii) formalize the theoretical properties of different QoS routing algorithms and then introduce a QoS routing algorithm (QOPRA) based on dynamic programming technique, and (iii) propose QoS multipath forwarding (QMPF) model for paths diversity exploitation. NS2-based simulations proved the DQARE superiority in terms of delay, packet delivery ratio, throughput, and control overhead. Moreover, extensive simulations are used to compare the proposed QOPRA algorithm and QMPF model with their counterparts in the literature

    A holistic architecture using peer to peer (P2P) protocols for the internet of things and wireless sensor networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) interact with the physical world using sensing and/or actuation. The wireless capability of WSN nodes allows them to be deployed close to the sensed phenomenon. Cheaper processing power and the use of micro IP stacks allow nodes to form an “Internet of Things” (IoT) integrating the physical world with the Internet in a distributed system of devices and applications. Applications using the sensor data may be located across the Internet from the sensor network, allowing Cloud services and Big Data approaches to store and analyse this data in a scalable manner, supported by new approaches in the area of fog and edge computing. Furthermore, the use of protocols such as the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) and data models such as IPSO Smart Objects have supported the adoption of IoT in a range of scenarios. IoT has the potential to become a realisation of Mark Weiser’s vision of ubiquitous computing where tiny networked computers become woven into everyday life. This presents the challenge of being able to scale the technology down to resource-constrained devices and to scale it up to billions of devices. This will require seamless interoperability and abstractions that can support applications on Cloud services and also on node devices with constrained computing and memory capabilities, limited development environments and requirements on energy consumption. This thesis proposes a holistic architecture using concepts from tuple-spaces and overlay Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks. This architecture is termed as holistic, because it considers the flow of the data from sensors through to services. The key contributions of this work are: development of a set of architectural abstractions to provide application layer interoperability, a novel cache algorithm supporting leases, a tuple-space based data store for local and remote data and a Peer to Peer (P2P) protocol with an innovative use of a DHT in building an overlay network. All these elements are designed for implementation on a resource constrained node and to be extensible to server environments, which is shown in a prototype implementation. This provides the basis for a new P2P holistic approach that will allow Wireless Sensor Networks and IoT to operate in a self-organising ad hoc manner in order to deliver the promise of IoT

    Self-management Framework for Mobile Autonomous Systems

    The advent of mobile and ubiquitous systems has enabled the development of autonomous systems such as wireless-sensors for environmental data collection and teams of collaborating Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAVs) used in missions unsuitable for humans. However, with these range of new application domains comes a new challenge – enabling self-management in mobile autonomous systems. The primary challenge in using autonomous systems for real-life missions is shifting the burden of management from humans to these systems themselves without loss of the ability to adapt to failures, changes in context, and changing user requirements. Autonomous systems have to be able to manage themselves individually as well as to form self-managing teams that are able to recover or adapt to failures, protect themselves from attacks and optimise performance. This thesis proposes a novel distributed policy-based framework that enables autonomous systems to perform self management individually and as a team. The framework allows missions to be specified in terms of roles in an adaptable and reusable way, enables dynamic and secure team formation with a utility-based approach for optimal role assignment, caters for communication link maintenance among team members and recovery from failure. Adaptive management is achieved by employing an architecture that uses policy-based techniques to allow dynamic modification of the management strategy relating to resources, role behaviour, team and communications management, without reloading the basic software within the system. Evaluation of the framework shows that it is scalable with respect to the number of roles, and consequently the number of autonomous systems participating in the mission. It is also shown to be optimal with respect to role assignments, and robust to intermittent communication link disconnections and permanent team-member failures. The prototype implementation was tested on mobile robots as a proof-ofconcept demonstration

    A Model for Scientific Workflows with Parallel and Distributed Computing

    In the last decade we witnessed an immense evolution of the computing infrastructures in terms of processing, storage and communication. On one hand, developments in hardware architectures have made it possible to run multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine. On the other hand, the increase of the available network communication bandwidth has enabled the widespread use of distributed computing infrastructures, for example based on clusters, grids and clouds. The above factors enabled different scientific communities to aim for the development and implementation of complex scientific applications possibly involving large amounts of data. However, due to their structural complexity, these applications require decomposition models to allow multiple tasks running in parallel and distributed environments. The scientific workflow concept arises naturally as a way to model applications composed of multiple activities. In fact, in the past decades many initiatives have been undertaken to model application development using the workflow paradigm, both in the business and in scientific domains. However, despite such intensive efforts, current scientific workflow systems and tools still have limitations, which pose difficulties to the development of emerging large-scale, distributed and dynamic applications. This dissertation proposes the AWARD model for scientific workflows with parallel and distributed computing. AWARD is an acronym for Autonomic Workflow Activities Reconfigurable and Dynamic. The AWARD model has the following main characteristics. It is based on a decentralized execution control model where multiple autonomic workflow activities interact by exchanging tokens through input and output ports. The activities can be executed separately in diverse computing environments, such as in a single computer or on multiple virtual machines running on distributed infrastructures, such as clusters and clouds. It provides basic workflow patterns for parallel and distributed application decomposition and other useful patterns supporting feedback loops and load balancing. The model is suitable to express applications based on a finite or infinite number of iterations, thus allowing to model long-running workflows, which are typical in scientific experimention. A distintive contribution of the AWARD model is the support for dynamic reconfiguration of long-running workflows. A dynamic reconfiguration allows to modify the structure of the workflow, for example, to introduce new activities, modify the connections between activity input and output ports. The activity behavior can also be modified, for example, by dynamically replacing the activity algorithm. In addition to the proposal of a new workflow model, this dissertation presents the implementation of a fully functional software architecture that supports the AWARD model. The implemented prototype was used to validate and refine the model across multiple workflow scenarios whose usefulness has been demonstrated in practice clearly, through experimental results, demonstrating the advantages of the major characteristics and contributions of the AWARD model. The implemented prototype was also used to develop application cases, such as a workflow to support the implementation of the MapReduce model and a workflow to support a text mining application developed by an external user. The extensive experimental work confirmed the adequacy of the AWARD model and its implementation for developing applications that exploit parallelism and distribution using the scientific workflows paradigm
