Characterizing and Mitigating Virtual Machine Interference in Public Clouds.
This dissertation studies the mitigation of the performance and security interference between guest virtual machines (VMs) in public clouds. The goals are to characterize the impact of VM interference, uncover the root cause of the negative impact, and design novel techniques to mitigate such impact. The central premise of this dissertation is that by identifying the shared resources that cause the VM interference and by exploiting the properties of the workloads that share these resources with adapted scheduling policies, public cloud services can reduce conflicts of resource usage between guests and hence mitigate their interference. Current techniques for conflict reduction and interference mitigation overlook the virtualization semantic gap between the cloud host infrastructure and guest virtual ma- chines and the unique challenges posed by the multi-tenancy service model necessary to support public cloud services.
This dissertation deals with both performance and security interference problems. It characterizes the impact of VM interference on inter-VM network latency using live measurements in a real public cloud and studies the root cause of the negative impact with controlled experiments on a local testbed. Two methods of improving the inter-VM net- work latency are explored. The first approach is a guest-centric solution that exploits the properties of application workloads to avoid interference without any support from the underlying host infrastructure. The second approach is a host-centric solution that adapts the scheduling policies for the contented resources that cause the interference without guest cooperation. Similarly, the characteristics of cache-based cross-VM attacks are studied in detail using both live cloud measurements and testbed experiments. Information sharing in supply chains: a review of risks and opportunities using the Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA)
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the most important research areas on information sharing in supply chains and related risks, taking into account their evolution over time. This paper sheds light on what is happening today and what the trajectories for the future are, with particular respect to the implications for supply chain management. Design/Methodology/Approach – The dynamic literature review method called Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA) was adopted. It combines the Systematic Literature Review approach and bibliographic network analyses, and it relies on objective measures and algorithms to perform quantitative literature-based detection of emerging topics. Findings-The focus of the literature seems to be on threats internal to the extended supply chain rather than external attacks, such as viruses, traditionally related to information technology (IT). The main arising risk appears to be the intentional or non-intentional leakage of information. Also, papers analyse the implications for information sharing coming from " soft " factors such as trust and collaboration among supply chain partners. Opportunities are also highlighted and include how information sharing can be leveraged to confront disruptions and increase resilience. Research limitations/implications – The adopted methodology allows providing an original perspective on the investigated topic, i.e. how information sharing in supply chains and related risks are evolving over time due to the turbulent advances in technology. Practical implications-Emergent and highly critical risks related to information sharing are highlighted to support the design of supply chain risks strategies. Also, critical areas to the development of " beyond-the-dyad " initiatives to manage information sharing risks emerge. Opportunities coming from information sharing that are less known and exploited by companies are provided. Originality/value – This study focuses on the supply chain perspective rather than the traditional IT-based view of information sharing. According to this perspective, this study provides a dynamic representation of the literature on the investigated topic. This is an important contribution to the topic of information sharing in supply chains, which is continuously evolving and shaping new supply chain models

Optimizing the delivery of multimedia over mobile networks
Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe consumption of multimedia content is moving from a residential environment to mobile
phones. Mobile data traffic, driven mostly by video demand, is increasing rapidly and wireless
spectrum is becoming a more and more scarce resource. This makes it highly important to operate
mobile networks efficiently. To tackle this, recent developments in anticipatory networking
schemes make it possible to to predict the future capacity of mobile devices and optimize the
allocation of the limited wireless resources. Further, optimizing Quality of Experience—smooth,
quick, and high quality playback—is more difficult in the mobile setting, due to the highly dynamic
nature of wireless links. A key requirement for achieving, both anticipatory networking
schemes and QoE optimization, is estimating the available bandwidth of mobile devices. Ideally,
this should be done quickly and with low overhead.
In summary, we propose a series of improvements to the delivery of multimedia over mobile
networks. We do so, be identifying inefficiencies in the interconnection of mobile operators with
the servers hosting content, propose an algorithm to opportunistically create frequent capacity estimations
suitable for use in resource optimization solutions and finally propose another algorithm
able to estimate the bandwidth class of a device based on minimal traffic in order to identify the
ideal streaming quality its connection may support before commencing playback.
The main body of this thesis proposes two lightweight algorithms designed to provide bandwidth
estimations under the high constraints of the mobile environment, such as and most notably
the usually very limited traffic quota. To do so, we begin with providing a thorough overview
of the communication path between a content server and a mobile device. We continue with
analysing how accurate smartphone measurements can be and also go in depth identifying the
various artifacts adding noise to the fidelity of on device measurements. Then, we first propose
a novel lightweight measurement technique that can be used as a basis for advanced resource
optimization algorithms to be run on mobile phones. Our main idea leverages an original packet
dispersion based technique to estimate per user capacity. This allows passive measurements by
just sampling the existing mobile traffic. Our technique is able to efficiently filter outliers introduced
by mobile network schedulers and phone hardware. In order to asses and verify our
measurement technique, we apply it to a diverse dataset generated by both extensive simulations
and a week-long measurement campaign spanning two cities in two countries, different radio
technologies, and covering all times of the day. The results demonstrate that our technique is effective even if it is provided only with a small fraction of the exchanged packets of a flow. The
only requirement for the input data is that it should consist of a few consecutive packets that are
gathered periodically. This makes the measurement algorithm a good candidate for inclusion in
OS libraries to allow for advanced resource optimization and application-level traffic scheduling,
based on current and predicted future user capacity.
We proceed with another algorithm that takes advantage of the traffic generated by short-lived
TCP connections, which form the majority of the mobile connections, to passively estimate the
currently available bandwidth class. Our algorithm is able to extract useful information even if the
TCP connection never exits the slow start phase. To the best of our knowledge, no other solution
can operate with such constrained input. Our estimation method is able to achieve good precision
despite artifacts introduced by the slow start behavior of TCP, mobile scheduler and phone hardware.
We evaluate our solution against traces collected in 4 European countries. Furthermore, the
small footprint of our algorithm allows its deployment on resource limited devices.
Finally, in an attempt to face the rapid traffic increase, mobile application developers outsource
their cloud infrastructure deployment and content delivery to cloud computing services
and content delivery networks. Studying how these services, which we collectively denote Cloud
Service Providers (CSPs), perform over Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) is crucial to understanding
some of the performance limitations of today’s mobile apps. To that end, we perform
the first empirical study of the complex dynamics between applications, MNOs and CSPs. First,
we use real mobile app traffic traces that we gathered through a global crowdsourcing campaign
to identify the most prevalent CSPs supporting today’s mobile Internet. Then, we investigate how
well these services interconnect with major European MNOs at a topological level, and measure
their performance over European MNO networks through a month-long measurement campaign
on the MONROE mobile broadband testbed. We discover that the top 6 most prevalent CSPs
are used by 85% of apps, and observe significant differences in their performance across different
MNOs due to the nature of their services, peering relationships with MNOs, and deployment
strategies. We also find that CSP performance in MNOs is affected by inflated path length, roaming,
and presence of middleboxes, but not influenced by the choice of DNS resolver. We also
observe that the choice of operator’s Point of Presence (PoP) may inflate by at least 20% the

HATSouth: a global network of fully automated identical wide-field telescopes
HATSouth is the world's first network of automated and homogeneous telescopes
that is capable of year-round 24-hour monitoring of positions over an entire
hemisphere of the sky. The primary scientific goal of the network is to
discover and characterize a large number of transiting extrasolar planets,
reaching out to long periods and down to small planetary radii. HATSouth
achieves this by monitoring extended areas on the sky, deriving high precision
light curves for a large number of stars, searching for the signature of
planetary transits, and confirming planetary candidates with larger telescopes.
HATSouth employs 6 telescope units spread over 3 locations with large longitude
separation in the southern hemisphere (Las Campanas Observatory, Chile; HESS
site, Namibia; Siding Spring Observatory, Australia). Each of the HATSouth
units holds four 0.18m diameter f/2.8 focal ratio telescope tubes on a common
mount producing an 8.2x8.2 arcdeg field, imaged using four 4Kx4K CCD cameras
and Sloan r filters, to give a pixel scale of 3.7 arcsec/pixel. The HATSouth
network is capable of continuously monitoring 128 square arc-degrees. We
present the technical details of the network, summarize operations, and present
weather statistics for the 3 sites. On average each of the 6 HATSouth units has
conducted observations on ~500 nights over a 2-year time period, yielding a
total of more than 1million science frames at 4 minute integration time, and
observing ~10.65 hours per day on average. We describe the scheme of our data
transfer and reduction from raw pixel images to trend-filtered light curves and
transiting planet candidates. Photometric precision reaches ~6 mmag at 4-minute
cadence for the brightest non-saturated stars at r~10.5. We present detailed
transit recovery simulations to determine the expected yield of transiting

The program was conducted by the University of Alabama and MSFC during the period June 1, 1992 through August 7, 1992. Operated under the auspices of the American Society for Engineering Education, the MSFC program, was well as those at other centers, was sponsored by the Office of Educational Affairs, NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC. The basic objectives of the programs, which are the 29th year of operation nationally, are (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate and exchange ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of the participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA centers
