Youth Media's Impact on Audience and Channels of Distribution

In partnership with the Open Society Institute, the Surdna Foundation supported a research and capacity building initiative focused on youth media's impact on audience. Social Policy Research Associates (http://www.spra.com), based out of the Bay Area, was hired to conduct a literature review of existing media evaluation models, develop a theory of youth media impact on audience, and create a toolkit, which was used to build the evaluation capacity of a regional group of youth media organizations

Data governance spaces: The case of a national digital service for personal health data

This paper investigates data governance empirically by conducting a retrospective study of the ten-year evolution of a national digital service for personal health data in Norway. We show how data governance unfolds over time as data become shared and itinerant across multiple actors. Building on our findings, we introduce the concept of data governance spaces to refer to the authorized relationships among multiple actors, which specify the boundaries of decision-making authority, rights, roles, and responsibilities around data processing. We contribute to the literature on data governance by distinguishing between a) authority multiplication, where data are handed over to other actors to serve diverse purposes triggering horizontal dynamics, and b) actor subordination, where authorities delegate data handling for uniform purposes triggering vertical dynamics. Overall, the paper extends prior research by showing how data governance unfolds beyond intra-, or inter-organizational boundaries and shifts attention to data's pivotal role, and the purposes for which data are collected, shared or used across multiple actors.publishedVersio

Business Value of IT: An Essay on Expanding Research Directions to Keep up with the Times

Much of the work on the business value of IT has examined relationships between IT inputs and economic outcomes of the firm. Yet, business executives and researchers continue to question the value of IT investments. We argue that while the current trajectory of research in this important area is useful, it is limited. In order to address the evolving nature of IT and the novel contexts in which it is being exploited, we must create a discontinuity in our thinking of how IT value should be studied. After summarizing what we have learned thus far, we discuss key new research themes that must be addressed if IT is to be demonstrably relevant. Further, we identify specific research thrusts, areas for theoretical development, and research questions on IT-based value that must be included in our research agenda for the future. We conclude by challenging IT researchers to consider the consequences of status quo research themes versus an expanded set of research questions

Conceptualizing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy as a Supportive-Educative Nursing System for Patients with Insomnia

Difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep is one of the most common health complaints of the general population. Approximately 35-50% of people experience occasional insomnia symptoms (Walsh et al., 2011) while 12-20% have insomnia disorder (Morin, et al., 2011; Roth et al., 2011). An effective treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I; Schutte-Rodin, Broch, Buysse, Dorsey, & Sateia, 2008), a nonpharmacological, evidence-based intervention aimed at changing sleep behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to frame CBT-I as a nursing intervention for insomnia within the context of Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory (Orem, 2001). Orem’s theory provides a framework from which to view the process of improving patients’ sleep using CBT-I as a supportive-educative nursing system. Through the therapies of CBT-I, patients develop the power components of selfcare agency resulting in behavior change, which is consistent with Orem’s notion of deliberate action and self-care. Because holistic patient care, support, and patient teaching are fundamental aspects of nursing care to which nurses are acculturated, nurses are ideally suited to provide CBT-I

Towards Conceptualizing Information Transparency and its Role in Internet Consumers' Concerns: A Literature Review

In recent years, calls for a safer online shopping environment are growing louder. Empirical studies on consumers’ expectations of ethical e-commerce practices have found that the top concerns among e-shoppers revolved around security of transactions, privacy protection of personal data, deception and reliability issues. Consumer generally desire richer and truthful information to make purchase decisions. By addressing the information needs of consumers, transparency presents itself as a promising concept for firms to leverage towards strategizing its role in ethical practices. This paper revisits the consumer-perceived ethical issues in e-commerce literature, presents the disclosure paradox faced by e-seller firms, reviews the various conceptualizations of transparency in multidisciplinary literature and suggests extending the transparency strategy to map to consumers’ informational needs and concerns

Metalinguistic Arguments on What Counts as a “COVID-19 Death”

UIDB/00183/2020 UIDP/00183/2020In this contribution, we explore the plausibility and consequences of treating arguments over what counts as a COVID-19 death as metalinguistic arguments. While unquestionably related to the epidemiological and public health issues, these arguments are also arguments about how a term should be used. As such, they touch upon some of the foundational issues in meta-semantics, discussed in the recent literature on metalinguistic negotiations, conceptual ethics, and conceptual engineering. Against this background, we study official statements (of WHO, governments) and media reports to critically reconstruct the metalinguistic elements of the dispute over what a COVID-19 death is. We analyze in particular how epistemic and practical reasons are intertwined in nuanced and complex ways to produce an interesting type of metalinguistic interventions.publishersversionpublishe

Wpływ modelu kapitalizmu na politykę przemysłową prowadzoną przez państwo - przykład niemiec

Do wybuchu kryzysu gospodarczego w 2008 roku w debacie ekonomicznej na temat zasad prowadzenia polityki przemysłowej dominowało podejście neoliberalne- państwo nie powinno ingerować w rynek i zrezygnować z polityki przemysłowej. Jednakże kryzys gospodarczy doprowadził do zmiany paradygmatu. Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, w jakim stopniu i w jaki sposób model kapitalizmu wpływa na kształt polityki przemysłowej prowadzonej przez państwo. W artykule analizie zostały poddane Niemcy- główne założenia i cele prowadzonej przez nie polityki przemysłowej. Wykorzystanymi metodami badawczymi są przegląd literatury oraz analiza opisowa niemieckiego modelu kapitalistycznego w świetle teorii Hall i Soskice oraz klasyfikacji Amable’a. Artykuł wskazuje, że polityka przemysłowa prowadzona przez Niemcy jest dostosowana do niemieckiego modelu kapitalizmu, a głównym czynnikiem, który ją kształtuje, jest koncepcja społecznej gospodarki rynkowej
