Kılıçdaroğlu’s CHP: What Lies Ahead?

The unexpected switch of the CHP’s leadership from Deniz Baykal to Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu led to a series of debates about the party’s political future and its new place in the party system of Turkey. Most of the debates have focused on what exactly changed and what remained the same as a result of this switch. Kılıçdaroğlu’s speeches revealed signs for new directions in CHP’s discourse indeed, as they included novel issues such as intra-party democracy and empowering the party’s women and youth branches. The purpose of this policy brief is to propose ideas to the CHP as a social democratic party, so it can be a serious political alternative to the conservative AK Party. The CHP’s major target should be democratization to be achieved at two different levels: (a) institutional and (b) ideological. Institutional democratization requires establishing intra-party democracy, decentralization of power, as well as bringing ideological heterogeneity and political debates back to the party. Ideological democratization is about bringing ‘the left’ back to Turkish politics by embracing a progressive and social democratic discourse. AGN identification: what lies ahead

Classification has been one the first concerns of modern astronomy, starting from stars sorted in the famous Harvard classification system and promptly followed by the morphological classification of galaxies by none other than Edwin Hubble himself (Hubble 1926). Both classification schema are essentially connected to the physics of the objects reflecting the temperature for stars and e.g. the age of the star population for galaxies. Systematic observations of galaxies have revealed the intriguing class of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), objects of tremendous radiation that do not share the same properties of what we now call normal galaxies. Observations have led to the definition of distinct and somewhat arbitrary categories (Seyfert galaxies, quasars, QSO, radio AGN, etc), essentially rediscovering the many faces of the same phenomenon, up until the unification of AGN (Antonucci 1993, Urry and Padovani 1995). Even after the realization that all AGN have the same engine powering their amazing radiation, astronomers are still using and refining the selection criteria within their favorite electromagnetic range in the hope to better understand the impact of the AGN phenomenon in the greater context of galaxy evolution. In the dawn of Big Data astronomy we find ourselves equipped with new tools. I will present the prospects of machine learning methods in better understanding the AGN population. Namely, I will show results from supervised learning algorithms whereby a labeled training set is used to amalgamate decision tree(s) (Fotopoulou et al., 2016) or neural network(s), and unsupervised learning where the algorithm performs clustering analysis of the full dataset in a multidimensional space identifying clusters of objects sharing potentially the same physical properties (Fotopoulou in prep.)

Some prophesize that stronger connections amongst emerging powers are the basis for a parallel international order parading different rules, norms and institutions. This paper examines the competitiveness of the Philippine information technology (IT) industry vis-à-vis its emerging competitors and neighboring countries in the region. While the industry boasts of being the largest foreign exchange earner for the country, it suffers from structural weaknesses that, unless addressed, render its long-term competitiveness at risk, especially as the competitors are increasing their stake in the world IT market faster than the Philippines.
