The application of BIM tools to explore the dynamic characteristics of smart materials in a contemporary Shanashil building design element

    Get PDF
Traditional architecture is known for its crafted facade features that respond to environmental, social and cultural requirements. Contemporary architecture produced façade features that attempted to enhance local design identity and local culture. Despite the advantages of modern technology, architectural elements have difficulties in fulfilling the idea of sustainable elegance that once traditional elements provided. This problem calls for an interdisciplinary design approach to deliver sustainable design solutions that positively adapt to the surrounding environment as well as maintain the state of elegance in design. With this in mind, the research aims to explore the role of new glass technologies to improve the performance and at the same time maintain the design value of traditional façade element “shanashil” in Baghdadi buildings. This research utilises BIM tools and uses smart materials to restore the lost value in design, which mimics the dynamic characteristics observed in nature, inspired by biomimetics strategies. Such qualities are found in the characteristics of smart dynamic glazing material particularly in the switchable, reversible properties of transparency and coloration efficiency. The material characteristics are attached to a 3D digital prototype to visualise the difference between dynamic and static properties through the use of technology tools Revit plugin and smart glazing virtual reality prototype. This research concludes that the dynamic characteristics of smart glazing materials are effective in delivering a multifunctional design quality to collectively blend in harmony with the surrounding environment

How Has The Food Industry Manipulated The Way Consumers Perceive Food And Health?

    Get PDF
Food is the most advertised commodity in the United States and food corporations spend on average over $36 billion a year on marketing and advertising (Albritton 172). Seventy percent of total advertising goes to market convenience foods, candy, snacks, soft drinks, desserts and alcohol (Albritton 172). As a result of the wide range of marketing on an even wider range of products, consumers have been taught to feel they have a considerable amount of choice. Ironically despite the array of brand-name commodities that give off this impression, only a few giant corporations control much of what is being offered

Managing change in North Shore’s Residential 3 Built Heritage zone: An evaluation of resource consent outcomes

    Get PDF
The goal of the study presented in this report has been to determine the extent to which resource consent outcomes in North Shore City’s Residential 3 Built Heritage zone comply with the District Plan. To this end, a sample of 250 properties was selected representing a sample size of 6.5%. The records for each of these properties was checked to identify those that have had a consent granted for additions and alterations to buildings, new and relocated buildings, and the demolition or removal of houses in the Residential 3 zone. This revealed that 100 properties in the sample (or 40%) have been granted a total of 126 resource consents for one or more of these activities. Each of the 100 properties was visited and the outcomes of the consents were compared against the District Plan assessment criteria

A Biblical / Creation Model and Response for Environmental Difficulties

    Get PDF
We seem unable to halt ecological deterioration. It\u27s almost as if a curse devours the earth , Isaiah 24:6. How extensive is this curse? What are Its Implications? Is there hope? Environmental decay confirms the Biblical model of original creation followed by a fallen world under the curse of death. This model parallels the scientific law of entropy, of Increasing disorder not Increasing order as evolutionists would argue. This paper explains the Biblical confirmation of what we observe taking place In the environment today, considers historical microcosms as well, and sets forth the biblical response to environmental difficulties. Much of the environmental movement has adopted ecopanthelsm as its conceptual model for environmental problems. This paper exposes the flaws of a pantheistic explanation and points out that the Biblical/Creation model Is a better one for what we observe. Man\u27s fundamental rebellion against God Is brought to light, hidden as It may be behind a facade of science and sophistication

The city as a construction site — a visual record of a multisensory experience

    Get PDF
In this article, I consider the reception of images that are present in a city space. I focus on the juxtaposition of computer‑generated images covering fences surrounding construction sites and the real spaces which they screen from view. I postulate that a visual experience is dependent on input from the other human senses. While looking at objects, we are not only standing in front of them but are being influenced by them. Seeing does not leave a physical trace on the object; instead the interference is more subtle — it influences the way in which we perceive space. Following in the footsteps of Sarah Pink, Michael Taussig and William J. T. Mitchell, I show that seeing (to paraphrase the title of an article by the last of the above mentioned scholars) is a cultural practice. The last part of the article presents a visual essay as a method that can contribute to cultural urban studies. I give as an example of such a method a photo‑essay about chosen construction sites in Poznań, which I photographed between December 2014 and June 2015

    The Fragility of Constitutional Democracy

    Get PDF
Is the survival of constitutional democracy in America at serious risk? Given the actions of the Trump administration, and given the decline of democracy and concomitant rise of authoritarianism the world over, there is genuine cause for alarm. In light of these fears, it is worth remembering that the authors of The Federalist Papers were notably pessimistic about the survival chances of republican government. To what extent have their constitutional design innovations contributed to present woes, and conversely, to what extent will the Constitution ensure the survival of democracy? This Essay argues that while the design of the Constitution is both helpful and harmful, much will ultimately turn on the political dimension. In particular, this Essay claims that the republic will survive only if the ongoing practices of democracy re-affirm its central values. But there are significant challenges to maintaining constitutional democracy. In addition to President Trump in the White House, current challenges include the decline in the democratic norms of civility and compromise, the rise of ideological warfare and hyperpartisanship, and the ever-deepening polarization between opposing camps—not only in government but also in the public at large. In the coming years, the continued vigilance and resistance of individuals and institutions will be crucially important to ensure the survival of constitutional democracy in America
