    Promoção das capacidades cognitivas em idosos: aplicação de um programa de estimulação cognitiva

    Ao longo dos anos, o envelhecimento populacional tem vindo a aumentar consecutivamente, quer devido ao aumento da esperança média de vida, quer devido às boas práticas que promovem o bem-estar das pessoas idosas. No decorrer da vivência de cada pessoa, determinadas funcionalidades físicas, sociais e psicológicas tendem a desenvolver comprometimentos, influenciando a forma como se desempenham certas atividades da vida diária de forma autónoma. Contudo, a sociedade está cada vez mais acautelada sobre as necessidades que o idoso apresenta, e quais as formas de atuação que podem ser aplicadas e desenvolvidas para promoção do seu bemestar e meio envolvente. É um facto que parte da percentagem de idosos a residir em Portugal necessita de apoio institucional, refletindo-se na necessidade de programas desenvolvidos por profissionais que promovam atividades de lazer, estimulação cognitiva, partilha de valores, entre outros, de modo a prevenir, a todos os níveis, declínios associados ao envelhecimento. Com este estudo pretendeu-se analisar as aptidões cognitivas de cada idoso intervencionado, de modo a ser implementado um conjunto de exercícios e dinâmicas, com o propósito de lhes proporcionar melhorias cognitivas ao nível das competências, orientação, retenção, atenção e cálculo, evocação, linguagem e habilidade construtiva, assim como melhorias na qualidade de vida. Nesse âmbito, a um grupo de idosos integrados numa valência de Centro de Dia do concelho de Coimbra, aplicaram-se os questionários MEEM e o Whoqol-Bref em regime de pré e pós teste, seguindo um plano quasi-experimental, com a implementação de um programa de estimulação cognitiva, com vista a avaliarem-se quantitativamente os resultados apresentados

    Neural correlates of perceptual texture change during active touch.

    INTRODUCTION: Texture changes occur frequently during real-world haptic explorations, but the neural processes that encode perceptual texture change remain relatively unknown. The present study examines cortical oscillatory changes during transitions between different surface textures during active touch. METHODS: Participants explored two differing textures whilst oscillatory brain activity and finger position data were recorded using 129-channel electroencephalography and a purpose-built touch sensor. These data streams were fused to calculate epochs relative to the time when the moving finger crossed the textural boundary on a 3D-printed sample. Changes in oscillatory band power in alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (16-24 Hz) and theta (4-7 Hz) frequency bands were investigated. RESULTS: Alpha-band power reduced over bilateral sensorimotor areas during the transition period relative to ongoing texture processing, indicating that alpha-band activity is modulated by perceptual texture change during complex ongoing tactile exploration. Further, reduced beta-band power was observed in central sensorimotor areas when participants transitioned from rough to smooth relative to transitioning from smooth to rough textures, supporting previous research that beta-band activity is mediated by high-frequency vibrotactile cues. DISCUSSION: The present findings suggest that perceptual texture change is encoded in the brain in alpha-band oscillatory activity whilst completing continuous naturalistic movements across textures

    Greater cognitive reserve is related to lower cortical excitability in healthy cognitive aging, but not in early clinical Alzheimer’s disease

    ObjectiveTo investigate the relationship between cortico-motor excitability and cognitive reserve (CR) in cognitively unimpaired older adults (CU) and in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD).MethodsData were collected and analyzed from 15 CU and 24 amyloid-positive AD participants aged 50–90 years. A cognitive reserve questionnaire score (CRQ) assessed education, occupation, leisure activities, physical activities, and social engagement. Cortical excitability was quantified as the average amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEP amplitude) elicited with single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation delivered to primary motor cortex. A linear model compared MEP amplitudes between groups. A linear model tested for an effect of CRQ on MEP amplitude across all participants. Finally, separate linear models tested for an effect of CRQ on MEP amplitude within each group. Exploratory analyses tested for effect modification of demographics, cognitive scores, atrophy measures, and CSF measures within each group using nested regression analysis.ResultsThere was no between-group difference in MEP amplitude after accounting for covariates. The primary model showed a significant interaction term of group*CRQ (R2adj = 0.18, p = 0.013), but no main effect of CRQ. Within the CU group, higher CRQ was significantly associated with lower MEP amplitude (R2adj = 0.45, p = 0.004). There was no association in the AD group.ConclusionLower cortico-motor excitability is related to greater CRQ in CU, but not in AD. Lower MEP amplitudes may reflect greater neural efficiency in cognitively unimpaired older adults. The lack of association seen in AD participants may reflect disruption of the protective effects of CR. Future work is needed to better understand the neurophysiologic mechanisms leading to the protective effects of CR in older adults with and without neurodegenerative disorders

    Lookaround Optimizer: kk steps around, 1 step average

    Weight Average (WA) is an active research topic due to its simplicity in ensembling deep networks and the effectiveness in promoting generalization. Existing weight average approaches, however, are often carried out along only one training trajectory in a post-hoc manner (i.e., the weights are averaged after the entire training process is finished), which significantly degrades the diversity between networks and thus impairs the effectiveness in ensembling. In this paper, inspired by weight average, we propose Lookaround, a straightforward yet effective SGD-based optimizer leading to flatter minima with better generalization. Specifically, Lookaround iterates two steps during the whole training period: the around step and the average step. In each iteration, 1) the around step starts from a common point and trains multiple networks simultaneously, each on transformed data by a different data augmentation, and 2) the average step averages these trained networks to get the averaged network, which serves as the starting point for the next iteration. The around step improves the functionality diversity while the average step guarantees the weight locality of these networks during the whole training, which is essential for WA to work. We theoretically explain the superiority of Lookaround by convergence analysis, and make extensive experiments to evaluate Lookaround on popular benchmarks including CIFAR and ImageNet with both CNNs and ViTs, demonstrating clear superiority over state-of-the-arts.     Homeostasis in Immunity-Related Pupal Tissues of the Malaria Mosquito Anopheles gambiae and its regulation by the NF-kappaB-like Factor Rel2

    Die Haut ist eine oft übersehene Komponente des angeborenen Immunsystems der Mücken. Die Haut der Mücke bildet eine physische Barriere, die die mikrobielle Homöostase aufrechterhält, das Eindringen von Toxinen wie Insektiziden verhindert und das Austrocknen verhindert. Die am meisten untersuchten Akteure des Immunsystems von Stechmücken sind das Fettgewebe und die Blutzellen, aber die Hauttalg-Fabriken, die Oenozyten, werden in Studien nur selten berücksichtigt. Mückenpuppen haben aktiv funktionierende immunitätsbezogene Organe, einschließlich derjenigen, die Hautbarrieren produzieren. Ihre biologische Rolle in diesem Entwicklungsstadium ist kaum bekannt, aber der Übergang von der Puppen- zur Erwachsenenhaut und die Auffälligkeit der talgproduzierenden Zellen machen dieses Stadium zu einem vielversprechenden Entwicklungsstadium für die Untersuchung der Hautbildung. Mit Hilfe der Transkriptomanalyse beschreiben wir die Rolle der Blutzellen bei der Entwicklung des chitinösen Teils der Insektenhaut, die Beteiligung des Fettkörpers an der Immunität und bestätigen die Rolle der talgproduzierenden Zellen im Lipidstoffwechsel. Darüber hinaus beschreiben wir talgsezernierende Zellen als einen bedeutenden Wirkungsort des NF-kappaB-ähnlichen IMD-Rel2-Pathway, in dem der Transkriptionsfaktor Rel2 die Retinoid-Homöostase reguliert. Schließlich bestätigen wir eine 100 Jahre alte Beobachtung, wonach sebumsezernierende Zellen der Stechmücke ihren Zellinhalt in einem Netzwerk von Vesikeln absondern. Wir beschreiben extrazelluläres Chromatin als Fracht in diesem Vesikelnetzwerk und sein antimikrobielles Potenzial.The skin is an often overlooked component of the mosquito's innate immune system. The mosquito skin provides a physical barrier that maintains microbial homeostasis, prevents the entry of toxins like insecticides, and avoids desiccation. The most studied players in the immune system of mosquitoes are the adipose tissue and blood cells, but studies rarely consider the skin sebum factories, oenocytes. Mosquito pupae have actively functional immunity-related organs, including those producing skin barriers. Their biological roles at this developmental stage are poorly understood, but the pupae-to-adult metamorphic skin transition and the conspicuity of sebum-secreting cells make it a promising developmental stage to study skin formation. We use transcriptomics to describe the role of blood cells in the development of the chitinous section of the insect skin, the involvement of the fat body in immunity, and confirm the lipid metabolism role of sebum-secreting cells. Furthermore, we describe sebum-secreting cells as a significant action site of the NF-kappaB-like IMD-Rel2 pathway where the transcription factor Rel2 regulates retinoid homeostasis. Finally, we confirm a 100-year-old observation of how mosquito sebum-secreting cells secrete their cellular contents in a network of vesicles. We describe extracellular chromatin as cargo inside this vesicle network and its antimicrobial potential

    Exploring cognitive mechanisms involved in self-face recognition

    Due to the own face being a significant stimulus that is critical to one’s identity, the own face is suggested to be processed in a quantitatively different (i.e., faster and better recognition) and qualitatively different (i.e., processed in a more featural manner) manner compared to other faces. This thesis further explored the cognitive mechanisms (perceptual and attentional systems) involved in the processing of the own face. Chapter 2 explored the role of holistic and featural processing involved in the processing of self-face (and other faces) with eye-tracking measures in a passive-viewing paradigm and a face identification task. In the passive-viewing paradigm, the own face was sampled in a more featural manner compared to other faces whereas when asked to identify faces, all faces were sampled in a more holistic manner. Chapter 3 further explored the role of holistic and featural processing in the identification of the own face using the three standard measures of holistic face processing: The face inversion task, the composite face task, and the part-whole task. Compared to other faces, individuals showed a smaller “holistic interference” by a task irrelevant bottom half for the own face in the composite face task and a stronger feature advantage for the own face, but inversion impaired the identification of all faces. These findings suggest that self-face is processed in a more featural manner, but the findings do not deny the role of holistic processing. The final experimental chapter, Chapter 4, explored the modulation effects of cultural differences in one’s self-concept (i.e., independent vs. interdependent self-concept) and a negative self-concept (i.e., depressive traits) on the attentional prioritization for the own face with a visual search paradigm. Findings showed that the attentional prioritization for the own face over an unfamiliar face is not modulated by cultural differences of one’s self-concept nor one’s level of depressive traits, and individuals showed no difference in the attentional prioritization for both the own face and friend’s face, demonstrating no processing advantage for the own face over a personally familiar face. These findings suggests that the attentional prioritization for the own face is better explained by a familiar face advantage. Altogether, the findings of this thesis suggest that the own face is processed qualitatively different compared to both personally familiar and unfamiliar face, with the own face being processed in a more featural manner. However, in terms of quantitative differences, the self-face is processed differently compared to an unfamiliar face, but not to a familiar face. Although the specific face processing strategies for the own face may be due to the distinct visual experience that one has with their face, the attentional prioritization of the own face is however, better explained by a familiar face advantage rather than a self-specificity effect

    La construcción y el paisaje en las ciudades patrimonio mundial. Historia, gestión y procesos

    El 6 de diciembre de 1996 la UNESCO declaraba a Cuenca como Ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad por ser un ejemplo de ciudad medieval fortificada que conserva su paisaje urbano original y que confluye a la perfección con paisaje natural que la rodea. Han pasado casi 27 años y Cuenca ha mantenido esos valores que la hicieron merecedora de ese galardón, adaptándose a los nuevos tiempos, pero conservando esa raíz histórica que la ata a las rocas sobre las que está erigida. Esa herencia recibida debemos gestionarla de manera adecuada, ya que es nuestro bien más preciado. Por ello, era necesario reunir en una monografía a diversos expertos que analizasen desde un punto de vista interdisciplinar algunas cuestiones de los procesos formativos de la ciudad, tanto geográficos como históricos, y constructivos. Así surge este trabajo, que bajo el título La construcción y el paisaje en las ciudades Patrimonio Mundial. Historia, gestión y procesos, nos adentra en los valores que hicieron a Cuenca merecedora de ser ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad y en cómo se debe gestionar este galardón en el futuro

    Sharp Variance-Dependent Bounds in Reinforcement Learning: Best of Both Worlds in Stochastic and Deterministic Environments

    We study variance-dependent regret bounds for Markov decision processes (MDPs). Algorithms with variance-dependent regret guarantees can automatically exploit environments with low variance (e.g., enjoying constant regret on deterministic MDPs). The existing algorithms are either variance-independent or suboptimal. We first propose two new environment norms to characterize the fine-grained variance properties of the environment. For model-based methods, we design a variant of the MVP algorithm (Zhang et al., 2021a) and use new analysis techniques show to this algorithm enjoys variance-dependent bounds with respect to our proposed norms. In particular, this bound is simultaneously minimax optimal for both stochastic and deterministic MDPs, the first result of its kind. We further initiate the study on model-free algorithms with variance-dependent regret bounds by designing a reference-function-based algorithm with a novel capped-doubling reference update schedule. Lastly, we also provide lower bounds to complement our upper bounds.Comment: ICML 202
