    Using basic image features for texture classification

    Representing texture images statistically as histograms over a discrete vocabulary of local features has proven widely effective for texture classification tasks. Images are described locally by vectors of, for example, responses to some filter bank; and a visual vocabulary is defined as a partition of this descriptor-response space, typically based on clustering. In this paper, we investigate the performance of an approach which represents textures as histograms over a visual vocabulary which is defined geometrically, based on the Basic Image Features of Griffin and Lillholm (Proc. SPIE 6492(09):1-11, 2007), rather than by clustering. BIFs provide a natural mathematical quantisation of a filter-response space into qualitatively distinct types of local image structure. We also extend our approach to deal with intra-class variations in scale. Our algorithm is simple: there is no need for a pre-training step to learn a visual dictionary, as in methods based on clustering, and no tuning of parameters is required to deal with different datasets. We have tested our implementation on three popular and challenging texture datasets and find that it produces consistently good classification results on each, including what we believe to be the best reported for the KTH-TIPS and equal best reported for the UIUCTex databases

    Scale-Adaptive Video Understanding.

    The recent rise of large-scale, diverse video data has urged a new era of high-level video understanding. It is increasingly critical for intelligent systems to extract semantics from videos. In this dissertation, we explore the use of supervoxel hierarchies as a type of video representation for high-level video understanding. The supervoxel hierarchies contain rich multiscale decompositions of video content, where various structures can be found at various levels. However, no single level of scale contains all the desired structures we need. It is essential to adaptively choose the scales for subsequent video analysis. Thus, we present a set of tools to manipulate scales in supervoxel hierarchies including both scale generation and scale selection methods. In our scale generation work, we evaluate a set of seven supervoxel methods in the context of what we consider to be a good supervoxel for video representation. We address a key limitation that has traditionally prevented supervoxel scale generation on long videos. We do so by proposing an approximation framework for streaming hierarchical scale generation that is able to generate multiscale decompositions for arbitrarily-long videos using constant memory. Subsequently, we present two scale selection methods that are able to adaptively choose the scales according to application needs. The first method flattens the entire supervoxel hierarchy into a single segmentation that overcomes the limitation induced by trivial selection of a single scale. We show that the selection can be driven by various post hoc feature criteria. The second scale selection method combines the supervoxel hierarchy with a conditional random field for the task of labeling actors and actions in videos. We formulate the scale selection problem and the video labeling problem in a joint framework. Experiments on a novel large-scale video dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the explicit consideration of scale selection in video understanding. Aside from the computational methods, we present a visual psychophysical study to quantify how well the actor and action semantics in high-level video understanding are retained in supervoxel hierarchies.     A learning approach to swarm-based path detection and tracking

    Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de ComputadoresThis dissertation presents a set of top-down modulation mechanisms for the modulation of the swarm-based visual saliency computation process proposed by Santana et al. (2010) in context of path detection and tracking. In the original visual saliency computation process, two swarms of agents sensitive to bottom-up conspicuity information interact via pheromone-like signals so as to converge on the most likely location of the path being sought. The behaviours ruling the agents’motion are composed of a set of perception-action rules that embed top-down knowledge about the path’s overall layout. This reduces ambiguity in the face of distractors. However, distractors with a shape similar to the one of the path being sought can still misguide the system. To mitigate this issue, this dissertation proposes the use of a contrast model to modulate the conspicuity computation and the use of an appearance model to modulate the pheromone deployment. Given the heterogeneity of the paths, these models are learnt online. Using in a modulation context and not in a direct image processing, the complexity of these models can be reduced without hampering robustness. The result is a system computationally parsimonious with a work frequency of 20 Hz. Experimental results obtained from a data set encompassing 39 diverse videos show the ability of the proposed model to localise the path in 98.67 % of the 29789 evaluated frames

    PhDVarious visual tasks may be analysed in the context of sampling from the visual field. In visual psychophysics, human visual sampling strategies have often been shown at a high-level to be driven by various information and resource related factors such as the limited capacity of the human cognitive system, the quality of information gathered, its relevance in context and the associated efficiency of recovering it. At a lower-level, we interpret many computer vision tasks to be rooted in similar notions of contextually-relevant, dynamic sampling strategies which are geared towards the filtering of pixel samples to perform reliable object association. In the context of object tracking, the reliability of such endeavours is fundamentally rooted in the continuing relevance of object models used for such filtering, a requirement complicated by realworld conditions such as dynamic lighting that inconveniently and frequently cause their rapid obsolescence. In the context of recognition, performance can be hindered by the lack of learned context-dependent strategies that satisfactorily filter out samples that are irrelevant or blunt the potency of models used for discrimination. In this thesis we interpret the problems of visual tracking and recognition in terms of dynamic spatial and featural sampling strategies and, in this vein, present three frameworks that build on previous methods to provide a more flexible and effective approach. Firstly, we propose an adaptive spatial sampling strategy framework to maintain statistical object models for real-time robust tracking under changing lighting conditions. We employ colour features in experiments to demonstrate its effectiveness. The framework consists of five parts: (a) Gaussian mixture models for semi-parametric modelling of the colour distributions of multicolour objects; (b) a constructive algorithm that uses cross-validation for automatically determining the number of components for a Gaussian mixture given a sample set of object colours; (c) a sampling strategy for performing fast tracking using colour models; (d) a Bayesian formulation enabling models of object and the environment to be employed together in filtering samples by discrimination; and (e) a selectively-adaptive mechanism to enable colour models to cope with changing conditions and permit more robust tracking. Secondly, we extend the concept to an adaptive spatial and featural sampling strategy to deal with very difficult conditions such as small target objects in cluttered environments undergoing severe lighting fluctuations and extreme occlusions. This builds on previous work on dynamic feature selection during tracking by reducing redundancy in features selected at each stage as well as more naturally balancing short-term and long-term evidence, the latter to facilitate model rigidity under sharp, temporary changes such as occlusion whilst permitting model flexibility under slower, long-term changes such as varying lighting conditions. This framework consists of two parts: (a) Attribute-based Feature Ranking (AFR) which combines two attribute measures; discriminability and independence to other features; and (b) Multiple Selectively-adaptive Feature Models (MSFM) which involves maintaining a dynamic feature reference of target object appearance. We call this framework Adaptive Multi-feature Association (AMA). Finally, we present an adaptive spatial and featural sampling strategy that extends established Local Binary Pattern (LBP) methods and overcomes many severe limitations of the traditional approach such as limited spatial support, restricted sample sets and ad hoc joint and disjoint statistical distributions that may fail to capture important structure. Our framework enables more compact, descriptive LBP type models to be constructed which may be employed in conjunction with many existing LBP techniques to improve their performance without modification. The framework consists of two parts: (a) a new LBP-type model known as Multiscale Selected Local Binary Features (MSLBF); and (b) a novel binary feature selection algorithm called Binary Histogram Intersection Minimisation (BHIM) which is shown to be more powerful than established methods used for binary feature selection such as Conditional Mutual Information Maximisation (CMIM) and AdaBoost

    Towards open-universe image parsing with broad coverage

    One of the main goals of computer vision is to develop algorithms that allow the computer to interpret an image not as a pattern of colors but as the semantic relationships that make up a real world three-dimensional scene. In this dissertation, I present a system for image parsing, or labeling the regions of an image with their semantic categories, as a means of scene understanding. Most existing image parsing systems use a fixed set of a few hundred hand-labeled images as examples from which they learn how to label image regions, but our world cannot be adequately described with only a few hundred images. A new breed of open universe datasets have recently started to emerge. These datasets not only have more images but are constantly expanding, with new images and labels assigned by users on the web. Here I present a system that is able to both learn from these larger datasets of labeled images and scale as the dataset expands, thus greatly broadening the number of class labels that can correctly be identified in an image. Throughout this work I employ a retrieval-based methodology: I first retrieve images similar to the query and then match image regions from this set of retrieved images. My system can assign to each image region multiple forms of meaning: for example, it can simultaneously label the wing of a crow as an animal, crow, wing, and feather. I also broaden the label coverage by using both region and detector based similarity measures to effectively match a broad range to label types. This work shows the power of retrieval-based systems and the importance of having a diverse set of image cues and interpretations.Doctor of Philosoph
