    Monad Transformers for Backtracking Search

    This paper extends Escardo and Oliva's selection monad to the selection monad transformer, a general monadic framework for expressing backtracking search algorithms in Haskell. The use of the closely related continuation monad transformer for similar purposes is also discussed, including an implementation of a DPLL-like SAT solver with no explicit recursion. Continuing a line of work exploring connections between selection functions and game theory, we use the selection monad transformer with the nondeterminism monad to obtain an intuitive notion of backward induction for a certain class of nondeterministic games.Comment: In Proceedings MSFP 2014, arXiv:1406.153

    Higher-order Games with Dependent Types

    In previous work on higher-order games, we accounted for finite games of unbounded length by working with continuous outcome functions, which carry implicit game trees. In this work we make such trees explicit. We use concepts from dependent type theory to capture history-dependent games, where the set of available moves at a given position in the game depends on the moves played up to that point. In particular, games are modelled by a W-type, which is essentially the same type used by Aczel to model constructive Zermelo-Frankel set theory (CZF). We have also implemented all our definitions, constructions, results and proofs in the dependently-typed programming language Agda, which, in particular, allows us to run concrete examples of computations of optimal strategies, that is, strategies in subgame perfect equilibrium.Comment: 20 page

    Selection Equilibria of Higher-Order Games

    In applied game theory the modelling of each player’s intentions and motivations is a key aspect. In classical game theory these are encoded in the payoff functions. In previous work [2,4] a novel way of modelling games was introduced where players and their goals are more naturally described by a special class of higher-order functions called quantifiers. We refer to these as higher-order games. Such games can be directly and naturally implemented in strongly typed functional programming languages such as Haskell [3]. In this paper we introduce a new solution concept for such higher-order games, which we call selection equilibrium. The original notion proposed in [4] is now called quantifier equilibrium. We show that for a special class of games these two notions coincide, but that in general, the notion of selection equilibrium seems to be the right notion to consider, as illustrated through variants of coordination games where agents are modelled via fixed-point operators.     The second Symposium on Cellular Automata “Journ´ees Automates Cellulaires” (JAC 2010) took place in Turku, Finland, on December 15-17, 2010. The first two conference days were held in the Educarium building of the University of Turku, while the talks of the third day were given onboard passenger ferry boats in the beautiful Turku archipelago, along the route Turku–Mariehamn–Turku. The conference was organized by FUNDIM, the Fundamentals of Computing and Discrete Mathematics research center at the mathematics department of the University of Turku. The program of the conference included 17 submitted papers that were selected by the international program committee, based on three peer reviews of each paper. These papers form the core of these proceedings. I want to thank the members of the program committee and the external referees for the excellent work that have done in choosing the papers to be presented in the conference. In addition to the submitted papers, the program of JAC 2010 included four distinguished invited speakers: Michel Coornaert (Universit´e de Strasbourg, France), Bruno Durand (Universit´e de Provence, Marseille, France), Dora Giammarresi (Universit` a di Roma Tor Vergata, Italy) and Martin Kutrib (Universit¨at Gie_en, Germany). I sincerely thank the invited speakers for accepting our invitation to come and give a plenary talk in the conference. The invited talk by Bruno Durand was eventually given by his co-author Alexander Shen, and I thank him for accepting to make the presentation with a short notice. Abstracts or extended abstracts of the invited presentations appear in the first part of this volume. The program also included several informal presentations describing very recent developments and ongoing research projects. I wish to thank all the speakers for their contribution to the success of the symposium.     Dynamical systems via domains:Toward a unified foundation of symbolic and non-symbolic computation

    Non-symbolic computation (as, e.g., in biological and artificial neural networks) is astonishingly good at learning and processing noisy real-world data. However, it lacks the kind of understanding we have of symbolic computation (as, e.g., specified by programming languages). Just like symbolic computation, also non-symbolic computation needs a semantics—or behavior description—to achieve structural understanding. Domain theory has provided this for symbolic computation, and this thesis is about extending it to non-symbolic computation. Symbolic and non-symbolic computation can be described in a unified framework as state-discrete and state-continuous dynamical systems, respectively. So we need a semantics for dynamical systems: assigning to a dynamical system a domain—i.e., a certain mathematical structure—describing the system’s behavior. In part 1 of the thesis, we provide this domain-theoretic semantics for the ‘symbolic’ state-discrete systems (i.e., labeled transition systems). And in part 2, we do this for the ‘non-symbolic’ state-continuous systems (known from ergodic theory). This is a proper semantics in that the constructions form functors (in the sense of category theory) and, once appropriately formulated, even adjunctions and, stronger yet, equivalences. In part 3, we explore how this semantics relates the two types of computation. It suggests that non-symbolic computation is the limit of symbolic computation (in the ‘profinite’ sense). Conversely, if the system’s behavior is fairly stable, it may be described as realizing symbolic computation (here the concepts of ergodicity and algorithmic randomness are useful). However, the underlying concept of stability is limited by a no-go result due to a novel interpretation of Fitch’s paradox. This also has implications for AI-safety and, more generally, suggests fruitful applications of philosophical tools in the non-symbolic computation of modern AI
