    Holographic local quench and effective complexity

    We study the evolution of holographic complexity of pure and mixed states in 1+11+1-dimensional conformal field theory following a local quench using both the "complexity equals volume" (CV) and the "complexity equals action" (CA) conjectures. We compare the complexity evolution to the evolution of entanglement entropy and entanglement density, discuss the Lloyd computational bound and demonstrate its saturation in certain regimes. We argue that the conjectured holographic complexities exhibit some non-trivial features indicating that they capture important properties of what is expected to be effective (or physical) complexity.Comment: 33 pages, 19 figures; v2: typos corrected; 35 pages, references added, new appendix.     Tunelling with a Negative Cosmological Constant

    The point of this paper is see what light new results in hyperbolic geometry may throw on gravitational entropy and whether gravitational entropy is relevant for the quantum origin of the univeres. We introduce some new gravitational instantons which mediate the birth from nothing of closed universes containing wormholes and suggest that they may contribute to the density matrix of the universe. We also discuss the connection between their gravitational action and the topological and volumetric entropies introduced in hyperbolic geometry. These coincide for hyperbolic 4-manifolds, and increase with increasing topological complexity of the four manifold. We raise the questions of whether the action also increases with the topological complexity of the initial 3-geometry, measured either by its three volume or its Matveev complexity. We point out, in distinction to the non-supergravity case, that universes with domains of negative cosmological constant separated by supergravity domain walls cannot be born from nothing. Finally we point out that our wormholes provide examples of the type of Perpetual Motion machines envisaged by Frolov and Novikov.Comment: 36 pages, plain TE

The present work is a two-volume collection of 13 chapters on the topic of grammatical gender seen through the prism of linguistic complexity. The contributions discuss what counts as complex and/or simple in grammatical gender systems, whether the distribution of gender systems across the world’s languages relates to the language ecology and social history of speech communities.     Sustainability Indicators Past and Present: What Next?

    This paper discusses the current state of thought amongst the Sustainability Indicator (SI) community, what has been achieved and where we are succeeding and failing. Recent years have witnessed the rise of “alternative facts” and “fake news” and this paper discusses how SIs fit into this maelstrom, especially as they are themselves designed to encapsulate complexity into condensed signals and it has long been known that SIs can be selectively used to support polarized sides of a debate. This paper draws from chapters in a new edited volume, the “Routledge Handbook of Sustainability Indicators and Indices”, edited by the authors. The book has 34 chapters written by a total of 59 SI experts from a wide range of backgrounds, and attempts to provide a picture of the past and present, strengths and weaknesses of SI development today. This paper is an “analysis of those analyses”—a mindful reflection on reflection, and an assessment of the malign and benign forces at work in 2018 within the SI arena. Finally, we seek to identify where SIs may be going over the coming, unpredictable years

    This article presents an excerpt from dissertation research on initial teacher education that analyzed and identified the relationships of the complexity involved in solving problems proposed by Halliday - volume II by 26 undergraduate students in Biology from a Public University in the State of Paran Therefore the action research methodology was used for the collection and development of the research associated with the Grounded Theory methodology for data analysis followed by the moments of open axial and selective coding The problem that this research solved was What is the influence of complex Physics problems on the learning process of Biology undergraduate students In this way the complex relationships built within the training process of the future Biology teacher and their influence on the teaching-learning process were identified The main results show that the formation process of such students future teachers reflects the concept of complexity and that a formative process with problembased learning enables the understanding of physical concepts on the subject of fluids in volume II of Hallida
