The History of the iPad
The purpose of this paper is to review the history of the iPad and its influence over contemporary computing. Although the iPad is relatively new, the tablet computer is having a long and lasting affect on how we communicate. With this essay, I attempt to review the technologies that emerged and converged to create the tablet computer. Of course, Apple and its iPad are at the center of this new computing movement
UNM Shock Tube Modernization
The UNM shock tube in the Mechanical Engineering department has been in continuous operation since its creation in 2007. During this time, significant discoveries in the field of Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities has been made with this shock tube. While conducting these experiments, limitations on the operational aspects and data quality aspects of this research tool have been found. To further advance the state of the art, it was necessary to address these limitations to allow the research to continue to push boundaries and discover new science
Nietzsche, Mann, and Modernism: a framework for morality in Raymond Chandler's detective fiction
In the wake of several newly released television detective series, there has been an increase in public discussion that centers on the dark philosophy of the hard-boiled detective. However, many of the contemporary conversations revolve around the cinematic history of film noir and the numerous philosophies it drew on or sought to counter. Scholars writing about these early noir films, which provide the basis for the contemporary detective movies and television series, argue for the impact that Modernist authors and thinkers had on them. However, the relationship between Modernism, the Gothic, and American detective fiction goes further back than the genre-changing film release of The Maltese Falcon. As one of the most celebrated and ground-breaking authors of this genre, Raymond Chandler is a necessary cornerstone upon which to build this conversation and explore the intersection of Modernism, the Gothic, and American detective fiction. This essay will look at Chandler’s impulse to question traditional morality and trace this impulse back through his education and influences to the strand of Modernism exemplified by Friedrich Nietzsche, his new philosopher, and Thomas Mann’s embodiment of his philosophy in literary fiction. This thread of Modernism works to destabilize a culturally dictated standard of morality, celebrate the philosopher-individual, and exert a clear influence on Chandler’s work and characterization of Philip Marlowe, Chandler’s iconic private detective figure. Establishing this influence is imperative to viewing Raymond Chandler’s detective fiction as the serious literature that he sought to write, and establishing the literary tradition of his moral questioning
TOBE: Tangible Out-of-Body Experience
We propose a toolkit for creating Tangible Out-of-Body Experiences: exposing
the inner states of users using physiological signals such as heart rate or
brain activity. Tobe can take the form of a tangible avatar displaying live
physiological readings to reflect on ourselves and others. Such a toolkit could
be used by researchers and designers to create a multitude of potential
tangible applications, including (but not limited to) educational tools about
Science Technologies Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and cognitive science,
medical applications or entertainment and social experiences with one or
several users or Tobes involved. Through a co-design approach, we investigated
how everyday people picture their physiology and we validated the acceptability
of Tobe in a scientific museum. We also give a practical example where two
users relax together, with insights on how Tobe helped them to synchronize
their signals and share a moment
Phase Transitions in the Universe
During the past two decades, cosmologists turned to particle physics in order
to explore the physics of the very early Universe. The main link between the
physics of the smallest and largest structures in the Universe is the idea of
spontaneous symmetry breaking, familiar from condensed matter physics.
Implementing this mechanism into cosmology leads to the interesting possibility
that phase transitions related to the breaking of symmetries in high energy
particle physics took place during the early history of the Universe. These
cosmological phase transitions may help us understand many of the challenges
faced by the standard hot Big Bang model of cosmology, while offering a unique
window into the very early Universe and the physics of high energy particle
interactions.Comment: 31 pages, LaTeX, 10 figures, 8 provided (7 EPS + 1 PS). Uses

Persephone\u27s contemporary dilemma: consent, sexuality, and female empowerment.
Greek mythology never strays very far from Western imagination. Though every few years literature involving the infamous Gods tapers off into the back of our collective minds, a resurgence soon follows. The late Romantic literary movement (as popularized by Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelly, and John Keats) depended heavily upon Greco- Roman mythology to help illustrate characters that existed somewhere between the shadow of imagination and the truth of humanity. Perhaps in an attempt to harken back to Romanticism, contemporary poetry has once again given life to the Greek Gods. Mythological characters can be seen throughout the works of modern poets, and perhaps none so popular as Persephone, Goddess of Spring and Queen of the Underworld. She has become a proverbial battleground for narratives of consent and free sexuality. Yet, poets trying to alter one version of her story, traced back to the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, end up making her a caricature instead. By centering Persephone’s representation only on her rape and abduction, authors fail to subvert her problematic, questionable origins, and instead remain in a constant, futile struggle with it
