The Editorial Board of African Journal of Nephrology (AJN) and I wish all readers, contributors and reviewers a very happy and successful year 2020. The year 2019 was a very productive year for AJN and the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN). The 2019 AFRAN congress, held from 25 to 29 September 2019 in Mombasa (Kenya), was a very successful one, with the participation of hundreds of delegates from all regions of Africa. The congress was held in partnership with the Kenya Renal Association and the African Paediatric Nephrology Association (AFPNA). The main congress was preceded by several successful courses. Prof Antony Were from Kenya was elected President of AFRAN. The next AFRAN congress will be held next year in CĂŽte d’Ivoire. In 2019, we published excellent reviews covering global disparities in kidney disease and its treatment as well as the use of data from renal registries in randomised controlled trials. We therefore encourage our readers to participate in the collection of data for registries as well as to make use of registry data for research. The AJN 2019 volume also published excellent original articles that showcased the strength of clinical nephrology research in various regions of Africa. The year 2020 is expected to witness several national and regional nephrology meetings. I urge all convenors to use AJN to publicize their meetings, as well as publish their proceedings. The World Congress of Nephrology will take place in Abu Dhabi from 26 to 29 March 2020. This year, World Kidney Day is scheduled for Thursday, 12 March 2020. The theme is “Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere – from Prevention to Detection and Equitable Access to Care”. I am confident that, in 2020, AJN will continue the trends set in the previous year, by publishing outstanding in-depth review articles as well as interesting original research articles. Finally, I am pleased to announce that this year, the South African Renal Society Congress will take place in Durban at the International Convention Centre, from 25-29 November 2020. The theme of the congress is “Big Data and Access to Quality Renal Care”. As President of the Local Organising Committee, I invite everyone to SARS Congress 2020. WOZA – DURBAN! Welcome to the 2020-2021 Academic Year! As we commence this new Academic Year, the word that comes to mind is: strange. We begin the year seeing others two-dimensionally, as flat images in Zoom screens. Yet, let\u27s remember that we are fully human with all the yearnings and desire to return to campus as soon as possible

Welcome to the 2019-2020 Academic Year! As I begin my sixth year at IMSA, I continue to be grateful for the opportunity to serve Illinois, indeed the world, in my role as President. I am so privileged to serve a community who takes our mission of “igniting and nurturing creative, ethical, scientific minds to advance the human condition” so seriously. A community that not only believes deeply in our mission, but also takes action reflecting these beliefs. We recorded my “welcome” video in our newly renovated auditorium supported by the generous contributions of our community

#MDXPD WELCOME “...bringing people and technology together (in meaningful ways) to create useful stuff and things.” Welcome, everyone, to our 7th Annual #MDXPD Magazine. Our 2020-21 academic year was dominated by the ongoing COVID pandemic. It has been a time of sadness and of difficulty, but also of innovation and inspiration. The creativity, compassion and resilience of our students and staff through this period shines through in the stories we feature in this issue of the magazine. We have continued to be lucky, in this period of fear, uncertainty and upheaval, to work and learn within an enlightened institution. The institutional ethos was captured by their statement of principles for staff and students at the beginning of the COVID crisis (see pages 03-04 of #MDXPD 2020 Magazine). This supportive framework continues to enable us to approach design and engineering within our philosophy that leads with insight, understanding and empathy, and values collaborative creativity and human and ecology centred innovation. Everything continued to change. And our students and staff confronted the changes with energy, dignity and support for one another. The staff and student co-design of the Product Design and Product Design Engineering structure, content and approach, highlighted in last year’s magazine remained a huge positive in developing our teaching and learning in the online space, through to hybrid live/online approaches and back towards fully live, digitally supplemented experiences for the approaching academic year. The focus on collaborative practice, studio ‘environments’ and team teaching, rather than traditional lecture-based approaches that was recreated in our 2020-21 ‘virtual studio’ practice, ensured that the hands-on and peer-supported experience was retained and refined in a positive and meaningful way. There were challenges during this period and in the coming return to live activity, but the creative and collaborative mindset of all staff and students surmounted the challenges, and we are optimistic that the new challenges will be equally well resolved. This year’s magazine contains our usual mix of inspirational final year major projects, staff and student stories and projects from across the year, alongside three special features: reflections on Teaching & Learning throughout COVID (see pages 3-16); ‘5 Years On’ reviews and reflections from our 2016 graduates on life in industry & at MDXPD (see pages 29-54); and a comprehensive collection of insights and advices from industry on Design Portfolios (see pages 75-105). Good luck to all our brilliant graduates for the future. Welcome to all our new students. Take care of yourselves & best wishes to all readers of the magazine

Welcome to Volume 11 of the Journal of Teaching and Learning for Graduate Employability.2020 promises to be a significant year for the Journal. In the coming months we will launch a new look for the Journal as we update to the newest version of OJS.
