    Heat of Absorption of CO2 in Aqueous Solutions of DEEA, MAPA and their Mixture

    AbstractA reaction calorimeter was used to measure the differential heat of absorption of CO2 in phase change solvents as a function of temperature, CO2 loading and solvent composition. The measurements were taken for aqueous solutions of 2-(diethylamino)ethanol (DEEA), 3-(methylamino)propylamine (MAPA) and their mixture. The tested compositions were 5M DEEA, 2M MAPA and their mixture, 5M DEEA + 2M MAPA which gives two liquid phases on reacting with CO2. Experimental measurements were also carried out for 30% MEA used as a base case. The measurements were taken isothermally at three different temperatures 40, 80 and 120°C at a CO2 feed pressure of 600kPa. In single aqueous amine solutions, heat of absorption increases with increase in temperature and depends on thetype of amine used. DEEA, a tertiary amine, has lower heat of absorption compared to MAPA being a diamine with primary and secondary amine functional groups. For amine mixtures, heat of absorption is a function of CO2 loading and temperature. The heat of absorption against CO2 loading depends on the composition of the amines in the mixture. All the measured data in this work were compared with 30% MEA at absorption (40°C) and desorption (120°C) conditions

    Although concrete behavior—such as avoidance, discrimination, rejection—is foundational to most definitions of stigma, knowledge of psychiatric stigma has been constructed mostly on the basis of measurement of self-reported attitudes, beliefs, and feelings. To help fill this gap, the current study examined avoidance behavior in psychiatric stigma. That is, we predicted that people would seek more physical distance from a man with a psychiatric problem than a man with a medical problem. One hundred fourteen undergraduates expected to meet a man with either Type II diabetes or schizophrenia. After completing several measures of self-reported stigma, participants eventually moved to an adjacent room and sat in one of several seats that systematically varied in their proximity to a seat ostensibly occupied by the target man. Results indicated that the expectation of meeting a man with schizophrenia, compared with diabetes, led to greater desired social distance, greater self-reported fear, and higher appraisals of the man’s dangerousness and unpredictability. More importantly, participants elected to sit farther away from the ostensible man with schizophrenia. This pattern of findings offers behavioral evidence of the psychiatric stigma phenomenon that has mostly been documented via measurement of self-reported attitudes and impressions.     Framework to Enhance Teaching and Learning in System Analysis and Unified Modelling Language

    Cowling, MA ORCiD: 0000-0003-1444-1563; Munoz Carpio, JC ORCiD: 0000-0003-0251-5510Systems Analysis modelling is considered foundational for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) students, with introductory and advanced units included in nearly all ICT and computer science degrees. Yet despite this, novice systems analysts (learners) find modelling and systems thinking quite difficult to learn and master. This makes the process of teaching the fundamentals frustrating and time intensive. This paper will discuss the foundational problems that learners face when learning Systems Analysis modelling. Through a systematic literature review, a framework will be proposed based on the key problems that novice learners experience. In this proposed framework, a sequence of activities has been developed to facilitate understanding of the requirements, solutions and incremental modelling. An example is provided illustrating how the framework could be used to incorporate visualization and gaming elements into a Systems Analysis classroom; therefore, improving motivation and learning. Through this work, a greater understanding of the approach to teaching modelling within the computer science classroom will be provided, as well as a framework to guide future teaching activities

    A double-edged sword: Use of computer algebra systems in first-year Engineering Mathematics and Mechanics courses

    Many secondary-level mathematics students have experience with graphical calculators from high school. For the purposes of this paper we define graphical calculators as those able to perform rudimentary symbolic manipulation and solve complicated equations requiring very modest user knowledge. The use of more advanced computer algebra systems e.g. Maple, Mathematica, Mathcad, Matlab/MuPad is becoming more prevalent in tertiary-level courses. This paper explores our students’ experience using one such system (MuPad) in first-year tertiary Engineering Mathematics and Mechanics courses. The effectiveness of graphical calculators and computer algebra systems in mathematical pedagogy has been investigated by a multitude of educational researchers (e.g. Ravaglia et al. 1998). Most of these studies found very small or no correlation between student use of graphical calculators or exposure to computer algebra systems with future achievement in mathematics courses (Buteau et al. 2010). In this paper we focus instead on students’ attitude towards a more advanced standalone computer algebra system (MuPad), and whether students’ inclination to use the system is indicative of their mathematical understanding.
