    Best practices to establish susccesful mobile health service in a healthcare setting

    Alternative healthcare programs have been steadily flooding the health care market, with the most notable being mobile health. Mobile health, more popularly known as mHealth, is expected to generate upward of $59 billion dollars. This is astonishing, considering the mHealth market is still in its infancy as an alternative healthcare model. Still, there are over 100,000 mHealth smartphone applications and platforms on the market. The concept of offering affordable medical services that are accessible to anyone, at any time and in any place appeals to the mission and purpose of healthcare organizations. However, a large number of the studies and publications on mHealth are associated with the technologies behind mHealth and provide very little information on the practices and challenges associated with implementing mHealth, especially within a medical facility. For this reason, it was important to learn from executive health IT professionals who have successfully implemented mHealth services within the US healthcare system. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to identify the practices used and challenges faced by CIOs in implementing mHealth technologies. The study also obtained recommendations CIOs believe are associated with successful mHealth services. This was a qualitative study that used a phenomenology lens focused on the viewpoint of CIOs and the growing phenomenon of mHealth as a part of the U.S. healthcare system. This approach allowed the research to obtain data on the lived experiences of seven CIOs through semi-structured interviews who were identified as top experts by Becker Hospital Review publications. The analysis of their experiences revealed 13 best practices for mobile health implementation. The findings in this study aimed to identify how mHealth services could expand access to medical services by outlining key considerations and resources required for successful implementation

    Civil Good is a website concept proposed by Alan Mandel with the goal of enabling safe, anonymous, productive, and civil discourse without the disruptive behavior and language common to much of the Internet. The goal of Civil Good is to improve the critical thinking and discussion skills of its users while combating the effects of political polarization and misinformation in society. This paper analyzes Mandel\u27s proposed concept, providing additional research to either support or refute the various features proposed, and recommendations to simplify user interactions.     “Opening a window into the future is not an easy task. Attempting to open one in a generation after the initial launching step might seemed either idealistic, naïve or with hindsight plain driven” (Formosa, 2017, p35). The drive to introduce Spatial Information integration across the Maltese Islands was an ideal, one that brought in technology, methodologies and results. However, as in the classic GIS evolution through the decades pointers on what constitutes a spatial information system were the subject of extensive debate Initially this was driven by the Push – Pull factor where entities using the primitive systems were being pushed by the availability of a mapping system and provision of base maps and hence creating data to fit the system. Initiated in the 1960s through military use, porting the processes to the physical and urban domains in the 1980s and 1990s, further takeup was made in the environmental domains in the 1990s to 2000s and eventually to the social domain in the 2000 to 2010s. Jumping through the decades, the global explosion of GIS and Spatial awareness as well as software, methods and integrative constructs morphed GIS into an availability that made it all possible, particularly through online and web-enabled GIS. This Pull – Push factor caused entities and private organisations to finally break through by creating their own data and then going for the mapping systems that fit their needs, systems that have evolved beyond recognition, both in the proprietary and open-source/open-access arenas.     Journalistic Practice and the Cultural Valuation of New Media: Topicality, Objectivity, Network

    Around the turn of the twenty-first century, American journalism is undergoing an existential crisis provoked by the emergence of digital and networked communication. As the economic model of producing journalism is undergoing significant changes, this study argues that the crisis of journalism is primarily a cultural crisis of valuation. Because the practices that traditionally defined the exclusivity of journalism as a form of public communication have been transposed to the online and digital environment through social media and blogs, such practices no longer value journalism in the same terms like in the age of mass media. The key to understanding the cultural crisis of journalism in the present, this study argues, is to revise the traditional narrative and its associated terminologies of the institutionalization of journalism. Journalism is thus defined as a structure of public communication, which needs to be enacted by producers and audiences alike to become socially meaningful. The consequence of seeing journalism as a structure sustained through social practices is that it allows to see the relation between audiences and their journalistic media as constitutive for the social function of new media in journalism. Through the analytically central dimension of practice, the study presents key moments in the history of modern journalism, where the meaning of new media was negotiated. These moments include the emergence of topical news media oriented toward a mass market (the penny press in the 1830s) and the definition of a schema of objectivity which valued journalistic practice in professional and scientific terms around the turn of the twentieth century in analogy to photographic media. In each phase, material, cognitive and social practices helped to define the value of a given new medium for journalism. Through the schemas of topicality and objectivity, journalistic practice institutionalized a privileged structure of public communication. The legacy of defining these schemas is then regarded as the central reason for the cultural crisis of journalistic practice in the present, as practices have been transposed and re-valued to sustain either forms of alternative journalism (as peer-production) or forms of self-communication in network media like blogs. Neither the form nor the technology of the blog alone can explain this differential social relevance but only the different ways in which social practices integrated and value new media. The study synthesizes an interdisciplinary array of concepts from cultural studies, sociology and journalism studies on subjects such as public communication, interaction, news production and cultural innovation. The theoretical framework of practice theories is then applied to an extensive body of primary and secondary source material, in order to retrace the cultural valuation of new media in a historically-comparative perspective. The study offers a theoretical and empirical contribution to the analysis of cultural innovation, which can be adopted to other cultural forms and media

    The application of mobile web and devices for environmental surveillance on construction sites in Malaysia

    Environmental surveillance on construction sites requires environmental information that is concise, to-the-point, timely and usable. However, physical surveillance andtraditional environmental monitoring (measurement) are challenging, time consuming, labour-intensive and can involve deficiencies and discrepancies. Technology basedsurveillance provides an alternative, but with this kind of surveillance it is often difficult to demonstrate a connection between any pollution detected and a specificsource in some circumstances. Thus, physical environmental surveillance (observation/walk-through inspection) still remains important but some improvementscan be made to it by adopting technology based surveillance. This situation creates an opportunity for deploying an information system which capitalizes on the advantages of the Internet of Things, so that decision makers can obtain an accurate and up-to-date view of their environmental management issues and status.The aim of this research was, therefore, to set out to investigate the potential for a mobile environmental information system as a part of the Internet of Thingstechnologies for environmental surveillance on Malaysian construction sites. Design Science Research (DSR) has been chosen as the philosophical approach and case studyas the research method were adopted for this research in order to achieve its objectives. A literature review on construction environmental management and mobile environmental information management was undertaken, followed by engagement with environmental experts in order to obtain detailed information requirements and toidentify user needs. These details were analysed and brought about the formulation of the system design goals, along with a conceptual model, which concluded in thedevelopment of the functional specification, the system architecture and the prototype development. The prototype system was demonstrated and evaluated interactively byconstruction environmental management teams, both in the UK and Malaysia.The main achievement of the research comprises the analysis of the needs required in a mobile environmental information system, the development of functional specifications and the demonstration and acceptance of the concept by practising construction environmental management teams. The research concludes that the concept of a mobile environmental information system is feasible, realising that it has greatly improving the task performing process as well as enhancing the flow of communication and reporting environmental surveillance activities on construction sites in nearly real time
