    Get PDF
Semantic Web (SW) techniques, such as ontologies, are used in Information Systems (IS) to cope with the growing need for sharing and reusing data and knowledge in various research areas. Despite the increasing emphasis on unstructured data analysis in IS, structured data and its analysis remain critical for organizational performance management. This systematic literature review aims at analyzing the incorporation and impact of ontologies in Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence (DW/BI) systems, contributing to the current literature by providing a classification of works based on the field of each case study, SW techniques used, and the authors’ motivations for using them, with a focus on DW/BI design, development and exploration tasks. A search strategy was developed, including the definition of keywords, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the selection of search engines. Ontologies are mainly defined using the Ontology Web Language standard to support multiple DW/BI tasks, such as Dimensional Modeling, Requirement Analysis, Extract-Transform-Load, and BI Application Design. Reviewed authors present a variety of motivations for ontology-driven solutions in DW/BI, such as eliminating or solving data heterogeneity/semantics problems, increasing interoperability, facilitating integration, or providing semantic content for requirements and data analysis. Further, implications for practice and research agenda are indicated.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Using ontology and semantic web services to support modeling in systems biology

This thesis addresses the problem of collaboration among experimental biologists and modelers in the study of systems biology by using ontology and Semantic Web Services techniques. Modeling in systems biology is concerned with using experimental information and mathematical methods to build quantitative models across different biological scales. This requires interoperation among various knowledge sources and services. Ontology and Semantic Web Services potentially provide an infrastructure to meet this requirement. In our study, we propose an ontology-centered framework within the Semantic Web infrastructure that aims at standardizing various areas of knowledge involved in the biological modeling processes. In this framework, first we specify an ontology-based meta-model for building biological models. This meta-model supports using shared biological ontologies to annotate biological entities in the models, allows semantic queries and automatic discoveries, enables easy model reuse and composition, and serves as a basis to embed external knowledge. We also develop means of transforming biological data sources and data analysis methods into Web Services. These Web Services can then be composed together to perform parameterization in biological modeling. The knowledge of decision-making and workflow of parameterization processes are then recorded by the semantic descriptions of these Web Services, and embedded in model instances built on our proposed meta-model. We use three cases of biological modeling to evaluate our framework. By examining our ontology-centered framework in practice, we conclude that by using ontology to represent biological models and using Semantic Web Services to standardize knowledge components in modeling processes, greater capabilities of knowledge sharing, reuse and collaboration can be achieved. We also conclude that ontology-based biological models with formal semantics are essential to standardize knowledge in compliance with the Semantic Web vision

This paper examines the main characteristics and bias behind the necessity of e-commerce in Albania, the socio-economic background of Albanian business and their readiness to support this new way of marketing. A survey and a subsequent analysis was conducted to examine organizations’ current practice on web-based information systems requirement. A typical ecommerce application consists of a network of texts, graphics, images, and so on, each of which should have one or more definite purposes that are part of the system development strategy. To determine important features that contribute to the success of the requirement analysis, it is important to find a theoretical relationship between e-commerce features and the development of e-commerce applications. Efforts were made to give answer to the question: “Can ecommerce be used by businesses in Albania? Are businesses in Albania ready and convenient for the advantages of e-commerce use? In order to examine the e-commerce development and the actual situation within Albanian territory the method of questionnaire was applied in some business organizations selected from the main cities –Tirana, Shkodra , Durres. Statistical methods help to analyze and determine the conclusions .The conclusion is that the trend of the Albanian business is to get all benefits out of e-commerce

Mastering the requirements analysis for communication-intensive websites

    Get PDF
Web application development still needs to employ effective methods to accommodate some distinctive aspects of the requirements analysis process: capturing high-level communication goals, considering several user profiles and stakeholders, defining hypermedia-specific requirements (concerning navigation, content, information structure and presentation aspects), and reusing requirements for an effective usability evaluation. Techniques should be usable by both stakeholders and the design team, require little training effort, and show relative advantage to project managers. Over the last few years, requirements methodologies applied to web-based applications have considered mainly the transactional and operational aspects typical of traditional information systems. The communicational aspects of web sites have been neglected in regards to systematic requirements methods. This thesis, starting from key achievements in Requirements Engineering (hereafter RE), introduces a model (AWARE) for defining and analyzing requirements for web applications mainly conceived as strategic communication means for an institution or organization. The model extends traditional goal and scenario-based approaches for refining highlevel goals into website requirements, by introducing the analysis of ill-defined user goals, stakeholder communication goals, and a hypermedia requirement taxonomy to facilitate web conceptual design, and paving the way for a systematic usability evaluation. AWARE comprises a conceptual toolkit and a notation for effective requirements documentation. AWARE concepts and notation represent a useful communication and analysis conceptual tool that may support in the elicitation, negotiation, analysis and validation of requirements from the relevant stakeholders (users included). The empirical validation of the model is carried out in two ways. Firstly, the model has been employed in web projects on the field. These case studies and the lessons learnt will be presented and discussed to assess advantages and limits of the proposal. Secondly, a sample of web analysts and designers has been asked to study and apply the model: the feedback gathered is positive and encouraging for further improvement.
