    Planning and managing the cost of compromise for AV retention and access

    Long-term retention and access to audiovisual (AV) assets as part of a preservation strategy inevitably involve some form of compromise in order to achieve acceptable levels of cost, throughput, quality, and many other parameters. Examples include quality control and throughput in media transfer chains; data safety and accessibility in digital storage systems; and service levels for ingest and access for archive functions delivered as services. We present new software tools and frameworks developed in the PrestoPRIME project that allow these compromises to be quantitatively assessed, planned, and managed for file-based AV assets. Our focus is how to give an archive an assurance that when they design and operate a preservation strategy as a set of services, it will function as expected and will cope with the inevitable and often unpredictable variations that happen in operation. This includes being able to do cost projections, sensitivity analysis, simulation of “disaster scenarios,” and to govern preservation services using service-level agreements and policies

    Master/worker parallel discrete event simulation

    The execution of parallel discrete event simulation across metacomputing infrastructures is examined. A master/worker architecture for parallel discrete event simulation is proposed providing robust executions under a dynamic set of services with system-level support for fault tolerance, semi-automated client-directed load balancing, portability across heterogeneous machines, and the ability to run codes on idle or time-sharing clients without significant interaction by users. Research questions and challenges associated with issues and limitations with the work distribution paradigm, targeted computational domain, performance metrics, and the intended class of applications to be used in this context are analyzed and discussed. A portable web services approach to master/worker parallel discrete event simulation is proposed and evaluated with subsequent optimizations to increase the efficiency of large-scale simulation execution through distributed master service design and intrinsic overhead reduction. New techniques for addressing challenges associated with optimistic parallel discrete event simulation across metacomputing such as rollbacks and message unsending with an inherently different computation paradigm utilizing master services and time windows are proposed and examined.     Simulation, especially Discrete-event simulation (DES) and Agent-based simulation (ABS), is widely used in industry to support decision making. It is used to create predictive models or Digital Twins of systems used to analyse what-if scenarios, perform sensitivity analytics on data and decisions and even to optimise the impact of decisions. Simulation-based Analytics, or just Simulation Analytics, therefore has a major role to play in Industry 4.0. However, a major issue in Simulation Analytics is speed. Extensive, continuous experimentation demanded by Industry 4.0 can take a significant time, especially if many replications are required. This is compounded by detailed models as these can take a long time to simulate. Distributed Simulation (DS) techniques use multiple computers to either speed up the simulation of a single model by splitting it across the computers and/or to speed up experimentation by running experiments across multiple computers in parallel. This chapter discusses how DS and Simulation Analytics, as well as concepts from contemporary e-Science, can be combined to contribute to the speed problem by creating a new approach called High Speed Simulation Analytics. We present a vision of High Speed Simulation Analytics to show how this might be integrated with the future of Industry 4.0

    Data Management in the APPA System

    International audienceCombining Grid and P2P technologies can be exploited to provide high-level data sharing in large-scale distributed environments. However, this combination must deal with two hard problems: the scale of the network and the dynamic behavior of the nodes. In this paper, we present our solution in APPA (Atlas Peer-to-Peer Architecture), a data management system with high-level services for building large-scale distributed applications. We focus on data availability and data discovery which are two main requirements for implementing large-scale Grids. We have validated APPA's services through a combination of experimentation over Grid5000, which is a very large Grid experimental platform, and simulation using SimJava. The results show very good performance in terms of communication cost and response time

    Economic-based Distributed Resource Management and Scheduling for Grid Computing

    Computational Grids, emerging as an infrastructure for next generation computing, enable the sharing, selection, and aggregation of geographically distributed resources for solving large-scale problems in science, engineering, and commerce. As the resources in the Grid are heterogeneous and geographically distributed with varying availability and a variety of usage and cost policies for diverse users at different times and, priorities as well as goals that vary with time. The management of resources and application scheduling in such a large and distributed environment is a complex task. This thesis proposes a distributed computational economy as an effective metaphor for the management of resources and application scheduling. It proposes an architectural framework that supports resource trading and quality of services based scheduling. It enables the regulation of supply and demand for resources and provides an incentive for resource owners for participating in the Grid and motives the users to trade-off between the deadline, budget, and the required level of quality of service. The thesis demonstrates the capability of economic-based systems for peer-to-peer distributed computing by developing users' quality-of-service requirements driven scheduling strategies and algorithms. It demonstrates their effectiveness by performing scheduling experiments on the World-Wide Grid for solving parameter sweep applications

    Modeling and Control of Server-based Systems

    When deploying networked computing-based applications, proper resource management of the server-side resources is essential for maintaining quality of service and cost efficiency. The work presented in this thesis is based on six papers, all investigating problems that relate to resource management of server-based systems. Using a queueing system approach we model the performance of a database system being subjected to write-heavy traffic. We then evaluate the model using simulations and validate that it accurately mimics the behavior of a real test bed. In collaboration with Ericsson we model and design a per-request admission control scheme for a Mobile Service Support System (MSS). The model is then validated and the control scheme is evaluated in a test bed. Also, we investigate the feasibility to estimate the state of a server in an MSS using an event-based Extended Kalman Filter. In the brownout paradigm of server resource management, the amount of work required to serve a client is adjusted to compensate for temporary resource shortages. In this thesis we investigate how to perform load balancing over self-adaptive server instances. The load balancing schemes are evaluated in both simulations and test bed experiments. Further, we investigate how to employ delay-compensated feedback control to automatically adjust the amount of resources to deploy to a cloud application in the presence of a large, stochastic delay. The delay-compensated control scheme is evaluated in simulations and the conclusion is that it can be made fast and responsive compared to an industry-standard solution
