    Stigmergy in Web 2.0: a model for site dynamics

    Building Web 2.0 sites does not necessarily ensure the success of the site. We aim to better understand what improves the success of a site by drawing insight from biologically inspired design patterns. Web 2.0 sites provide a mechanism for human interaction enabling powerful intercommunication between massive volumes of users. Early Web 2.0 site providers that were previously dominant are being succeeded by newer sites providing innovative social interaction mechanisms. Understanding what site traits contribute to this success drives research into Web sites mechanics using models to describe the associated social networking behaviour. Some of these models attempt to show how the volume of users provides a self-organising and self-contextualisation of content. One model describing coordinated environments is called stigmergy, a term originally describing coordinated insect behavior. This paper explores how exploiting stigmergy can provide a valuable mechanism for identifying and analysing online user behavior specifically when considering that user freedom of choice is restricted by the provided web site functionality. This will aid our building better collaborative Web sites improving the collaborative processes

    When a friend in Twitter is a friend in life

    Twitter is a fast-growing online social network service (SNS) where users can “follow ” any other user to re-ceive his or her mini-blogs which are called “tweets”. In this paper, we study the problem of identifying a user’s off-line real-life social community, which we call the user’s Twitter off-line community, purely from ex-amining Twitter network structure. Based on obser-vations from our user-verified Twitter data and results from previous works, we propose three principles about Twitter off-line communities. Incorporating these prin-ciples, we develop a novel algorithm to iteratively dis-cover the Twitter off-line community based on a new way of measuring user closeness. According to ground truth provided by real Twitter users, our results demon-strate the effectiveness of our approach with both high precision and recall in most cases

    Using dates as contextual information for personalised cultural heritage experiences

    We present semantics-based mechanisms that aim to promote reflection on cultural heritage by means of dates (historical events or annual commemorations), owing to their connections to a collection of items and to the visitors’ interests. We argue that links to specific dates can trigger curiosity, increase retention and guide visitors around the venue following new appealing narratives in subsequent visits. The proposal has been evaluated in a pilot study on the collection of the Archaeological Museum of Tripoli (Greece), for which a team of humanities experts wrote a set of diverse narratives about the exhibits. A year-round calendar was crafted so that certain narratives would be more or less relevant on any given day. Expanding on this calendar, personalised recommendations can be made by sorting out those relevant narratives according to personal events and interests recorded in the profiles of the target users. Evaluation of the associations by experts and potential museum visitors shows that the proposed approach can discover meaningful connections, while many others that are more incidental can still contribute to the intended cognitive phenomena

    Comparing Grounded Theory and Topic Modeling: Extreme Divergence or Unlikely Convergence?

    Researchers in information science and related areas have developed various methods for analyzing textual data, such as survey responses. This article describes the application of analysis methods from two distinct fields, one method from interpretive social science and one method from statistical machine learning, to the same survey data. The results show that the two analyses produce some similar and some complementary insights about the phenomenon of interest, in this case, nonuse of social media. We compare both the processes of conducting these analyses and the results they produce to derive insights about each method\u27s unique advantages and drawbacks, as well as the broader roles that these methods play in the respective fields where they are often used. These insights allow us to make more informed decisions about the tradeoffs in choosing different methods for analyzing textual data. Furthermore, this comparison suggests ways that such methods might be combined in novel and compelling ways

    Generating Practical Random Hyperbolic Graphs in Near-Linear Time and with Sub-Linear Memory

    Random graph models, originally conceived to study the structure of networks and the emergence of their properties, have become an indispensable tool for experimental algorithmics. Amongst them, hyperbolic random graphs form a well-accepted family, yielding realistic complex networks while being both mathematically and algorithmically tractable. We introduce two generators MemGen and HyperGen for the G_{alpha,C}(n) model, which distributes n random points within a hyperbolic plane and produces m=n*d/2 undirected edges for all point pairs close by; the expected average degree d and exponent 2*alpha+1 of the power-law degree distribution are controlled by alpha>1/2 and C. Both algorithms emit a stream of edges which they do not have to store. MemGen keeps O(n) items in internal memory and has a time complexity of O(n*log(log n) + m), which is optimal for networks with an average degree of d=Omega(log(log n)). For realistic values of d=o(n / log^{1/alpha}(n)), HyperGen reduces the memory footprint to O([n^{1-alpha}*d^alpha + log(n)]*log(n)). In an experimental evaluation, we compare HyperGen with four generators among which it is consistently the fastest. For small d=10 we measure a speed-up of 4.0 compared to the fastest publicly available generator increasing to 29.6 for d=1000. On commodity hardware, HyperGen produces 3.7e8 edges per second for graphs with 1e6 < m < 1e12 and alpha=1, utilising less than 600MB of RAM.     Technology-Powered Strategies to Rethink the Pedagogy of History and Cultural Heritage through Symmetries and Narratives

    Recent advances in semantic web and deep learning technologies enable new means for the computational analysis of vast amounts of information from the field of digital humanities. We discuss how some of the techniques can be used to identify historical and cultural symmetries between different characters, locations, events or venues, and how these can be harnessed to develop new strategies to promote intercultural and cross-border aspects that support the teaching and learning of history and heritage. The strategies have been put to the test in the context of the European project CrossCult, revealing enormous potential to encourage curiosity to discover new information and increase retention of learned information

    A Generalised Method for Empirical Game Theoretic Analysis

    This paper provides theoretical bounds for empirical game theoretical analysis of complex multi-agent interactions. We provide insights in the empirical meta game showing that a Nash equilibrium of the meta-game is an approximate Nash equilibrium of the true underlying game. We investigate and show how many data samples are required to obtain a close enough approximation of the underlying game. Additionally, we extend the meta-game analysis methodology to asymmetric games. The state-of-the-art has only considered empirical games in which agents have access to the same strategy sets and the payoff structure is symmetric, implying that agents are interchangeable. Finally, we carry out an empirical illustration of the generalised method in several domains, illustrating the theory and evolutionary dynamics of several versions of the AlphaGo algorithm (symmetric), the dynamics of the Colonel Blotto game played by human players on Facebook (symmetric), and an example of a meta-game in Leduc Poker (asymmetric), generated by the PSRO multi-agent learning algorithm.Comment: will appear at AAMAS'1
