For such efforts, it is essential for web management to be adequately quantified with relevant metrics and measures.     Statistical evaluation of research performance of young university scholars: A case study

    The research performance of a small group of 49 young scholars, such as doctoral students, postdoctoral and junior researchers, working in different technical and scientific fields, was evaluated based on 11 types of research outputs. The scholars worked at a technical university in the fields of Civil Engineering, Ecology, Economics, Informatics, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Safety Engineering. Principal Component Analysis was used to statistically analyze the research outputs and its results were compared with factor and cluster analysis. The metrics of research productivity describing the types of research outputs included the number of papers, books and chapters published in books, the number of patents, utility models and function samples, and the number of research projects conducted. The metrics of citation impact included the number of citations and h-index. From these metrics -the variables -the principal component analysis extracted 4 main principal components. The 1st principal component characterized the cited publications in high-impact journals indexed by the Web of Science. The 2nd principal component represented the outputs of applied research and the 3rd and 4th principal components represented other kinds of publications. The results of the principal component analysis were compared with the hierarchical clustering using Ward's method. The scatter plots of the principal component analysis and the Mahalanobis distances were calculated from the 4 main principal component scores, which allowed us to statistically evaluate the research performance of individual scholars. Using variance analysis, no influence of the field of research on the overall research performance was found. Unlike the statistical analysis of individual research metrics, the approach based on the principal component analysis can provide a complex view of the research systems.Web of Science30217716

    Dimensionality Reduction of Quality Objectives for Web Services Design Modularization

    With the increasing use of service-oriented Architecture (SOA) in new software development, there is a growing and urgent need to improve current practice in service-oriented design. To improve the design of Web services, the search for Web services interface modularization solutions deals, in general, with a large set of conflicting quality metrics. Deciding about which and how the quality metrics are used to evaluate generated solutions are always left to the designer. Some of these objectives could be correlated or conflicting. In this paper, we propose a dimensionality reduction approach based on Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) to address the Web services re-modularization problem. Our approach aims at finding the best-reduced set of objectives (e.g. quality metrics) that can generate near optimal Web services modularization solutions to fix quality issues in Web services interface.     Quality modelling and metrics of Web-based information systems

    In recent years, the World Wide Web has become a major platform for software applications. Web-based information systems have been involved in many areas of our everyday life, such as education, entertainment, business, manufacturing, communication, etc. As web-based systems are usually distributed, multimedia, interactive and cooperative, and their production processes usually follow ad-hoc approaches, the quality of web-based systems has become a major concern. Existing quality models and metrics do not fully satisfy the needs of quality management of Web-based systems. This study has applied and adapted software quality engineering methods and principles to address the following issues, a quality modeling method for derivation of quality models of Web-based information systems; and the development, implementation and validation of quality metrics of key quality attributes of Web-based information systems, which include navigability and timeliness. The quality modeling method proposed in this study has the following strengths. It is more objective and rigorous than existing approaches. The quality analysis can be conducted in the early stage of system life cycle on the design. It is easy to use and can provide insight into the improvement of the design of systems. Results of case studies demonstrated that the quality modeling method is applicable and practical. Practitioners can use the modeling method to develop their own quality models. This study is amongst the first comprehensive attempts to develop quality measurement for Web-based information systems. First, it identified the relationship between website structural complexity and navigability. Quality metrics of navigability were defined, investigated and implemented. Empirical studies were conducted to evaluate the metrics. Second, this study investigated website timeliness and attempted to find direct and indirect measures for the quality attribute. Empirical studies for validating such metrics were also conducted. This study also suggests four areas of future research that may be fruitful

    The Tenth Malaysian Software Engineering Conference (MySEC 2017) was hosted by Universiti Malaysia Terengganu from 7th to 9th August 2017 with the theme “Empowering Software Engineering towards IoT”. The series of MySEC with the strong support from Malaysian Software Engineering Interest Group (MySEIG) provides an avenue for academicians, researchers, and practitioners mainly in Malaysia to converge and share ideas in software engineering research and practice including technologies in software applications. In total, MySEC 2017 accepted 101 peer-reviewed papers from 130 submissions. The authors come from 19 countries with the papers covering nine main themes in software engineering field. The research themes, among others, intelligent software engineering comprises 16 papers followed by 12 papers in software process and quality, and 11 papers in software development methods, 10 papers in web-based software engineering; and in software metrics and measurement, respectively

    Comparative analysis of software reusability attributes in web and mobile applications

    Software reuse is an important approach to software engineering, where it aims to use previous software components to create new software systems. Reusability minimizes work repetition, development time, cost, efforts, and increases systems reliability. Reusability measurements help developers to provide the right metrics for measuring the reusability attributes and to identify reusable components among the wealth of existing programs. The main problem encountered in software reuse is the proper selection of the right software component for reuse due to similarity between the desired functionality and the function of the retrieved software component. In addition, it is difficult to define the right metrics that capture important quality attributes of a given class. This research aims to identify and measure the attributes that affect the software components reusability in two open source web and mobile applications. It also aims to compare the usage rate of reusability components in these applications to decide their ability to reuse. Four attributes were selected due to their impacts on reusability namely flexibility, portability, variability and understandability. Five metrics were identified to measure these attributes based on specified formulas. The metrics are Coupling Between Object (CBO), Lack Of Cohesion (LCOM), Depth Of Inheritance (DIT), Number Of Children (NOC) and Line Of Code (LOC). The research results indicate that the same attributes and metrics are suitable for measuring the reusability components in both applications. The comparison between the two applications for reuse indicates that the web application is more difficult for reuse than the mobile application
