    Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)

    This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio

    Environmental Observing Systems for Assessing Impacts of Land Use Change

    The purpose of this research is to evaluate the application of technology solutions for enabling environmental research. This project develops a complete environmental observing system in support of an investigation of the hydrological and ecological impacts of land use change on the coast of South Carolina. The land use change study is an ongoing multi-disciplinary effort involving the collection of a large number of monitored and sampled parameters at Bannockburn Plantation, which is located near the City of Georgetown in South Carolina. Long term monitoring will support a hydrological and ecological assessment of the study site before, during, and after proposed residential and commercial development. There are three primary objectives of this work. The first is the comprehensive instrumentation of a portion of the Bannockburn study site for hydrological parameters. The second is the implementation of a wireless sensor network to support the remote acquisition of monitored data. The third objective is the creation of a reliable and robust software solution for transmitting and distributing real time observation data. Collectively, these three objectives provide a complete environmental observing system. Results of this work will benefit land use change research by providing access to real time observation data and enabling the integration of powerful analysis tools. This research will provide a basis for the development of future environmental observation systems

    Predictable execution of scientific workflows using advance resource reservations

    Scientific Workflows are long-running and data intensive, and may encompass operations provided by multiple physically distributed service providers. The traditional approach to execute such workflows is to employ a single workflow engine which orchestrates the entire execution of a workflow instance, while being mostly agnostic about the state of the infrastructure it operates in (e.g., host or network load). Therefore, such centralized best-effort execution may use resources inefficiently -- for instance, repeatedly shipping large data volumes over slow network connections -- and cannot provide Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. In particular, independent parallel executions might cause an overload of some resources, resulting in a performance degradation affecting all involved parties. In order to provide predictable behavior, we propose an approach where resources are managed proactively (i.e., reserved before being used), and where workflow execution is handled by multiple distributed and cooperating workflow engines. This allows to efficiently use the existing resources (for instance, using the most suitable provider for operations, and considering network locality for large data transfers) without overloading them, while at the same time providing predictability -- in terms of resource usage, execution timing, and cost -- for both service providers and customers. The contributions of this thesis are as follows. First, we present a system model which defines the concepts and operations required to formally represent a system where service providers are aware of the resource requirements of the operations they make available, and where (planned) workflow executions are adapted to the state of the infrastructure. Second, we describe our prototypical implementation of such a system, where a workflow execution comprises two main phases. In the planning phase, the resources to reserve for an upcoming workflow execution must be determined; this is realized using a Genetic Algorithm. We present conceptual and implementation details of the chromosome layout, and the fitness functions employed to plan executions according to one or more user-defined optimization goals. During the execution phase, the system must ensure that the actual resource usages abide to the reservations made. We present details on how such enforcement can be performed for various resource types. Third, we describe how these parts work together, and how the entire prototype system is deployed on an infrastructure based on WSDL/SOAP Web Services, UDDI Registries, and Glassfish Application Servers. Finally, we discuss the results of various evaluations, encompassing both the planning and runtime enforcement

    The Origin of Data: Enabling the Determination of Provenance in Multi-institutional Scientific Systems through the Documentation of Processes

    The Oxford English Dictionary defines provenance as (i) the fact of coming from some particular source or quarter; origin, derivation. (ii) the history or pedigree of a work of art, manuscript, rare book, etc.; concr., a record of the ultimate derivation and passage of an item through its various owners. In art, knowing the provenance of an artwork lends weight and authority to it while providing a context for curators and the public to understand and appreciate the work’s value. Without such a documented history, the work may be misunderstood, unappreciated, or undervalued. In computer systems, knowing the provenance of digital objects would provide them with greater weight, authority, and context just as it does for works of art. Specifically, if the provenance of digital objects could be determined, then users could understand how documents were produced, how simulation results were generated, and why decisions were made. Provenance is of particular importance in science, where experimental results are reused, reproduced, and verified. However, science is increasingly being done through large-scale collaborations that span multiple institutions, which makes the problem of determining the provenance of scientific results significantly harder. Current approaches to this problem are not designed specifically for multi-institutional scientific systems and their evolution towards greater dynamic and peer-to-peer topologies. Therefore, this thesis advocates a new approach, namely, that through the autonomous creation, scalable recording, and principled organisation of documentation of systems’ processes, the determination of the provenance of results produced by complex multi-institutional scientific systems is enabled. The dissertation makes four contributions to the state of the art. First is the idea that provenance is a query performed over documentation of a system’s past process. Thus, the problem is one of how to collect and collate documentation from multiple distributed sources and organise it in a manner that enables the provenance of a digital object to be determined. Second is an open, generic, shared, principled data model for documentation of processes, which enables its collation so that it provides high-quality evidence that a system’s processes occurred. Once documentation has been created, it is recorded into specialised repositories called provenance stores using a formally specified protocol, which ensures documentation has high-quality characteristics. Furthermore, patterns and techniques are given to permit the distributed deployment of provenance stores. The protocol and patterns are the third contribution. The fourth contribution is a characterisation of the use of documentation of process to answer questions related to the provenance of digital objects and the impact recording has on application performance. Specifically, in the context of a bioinformatics case study, it is shown that six different provenance use cases are answered given an overhead of 13% on experiment run-time. Beyond the case study, the solution has been applied to other applications including fault tolerance in service-oriented systems, aerospace engineering, and organ transplant management

    Dynamic adaptation of interaction models for stateful web services

    Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia InformáticaWireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are accepted as one of the fundamental technologies for current and future science in all domains, where WSNs formed from either static or mobile sensor devices allow a low cost high-resolution sensing of the environment. Such opens the possibility of developing new kinds of crucial applications or providing more accurate data to more traditional ones. For instance, examples may range from large-scale WSNs deployed on oceans contributing to weather prediction simulations; to high number of diverse Sensor devices deployed over a geographical area at different heights from the ground for collecting more accurate data for cyclic wildfire spread simulations; or to networks of mobile phone devices contributing to urban traffic management via Participatory Sensing applications. In order to simplify data access, network parameterisation, and WSNs aggregation, WSNs have been integrated in Web environments, namely through high level standard interfaces like Web services. However, the typical interface access usually supports a restricted number of interaction models and the available mechanisms for their run-time adaptation are still scarce. Nevertheless, applications demand a richer and more flexible control on interface accesses – e.g. such accesses may depend on contextual information and, consequently, may evolve in time. Additionally, Web services have become increasingly popular in the latest years, and their usage led to the need of aggregating and coordinating them and also to represent state in between Web services invocations. Current standard composition languages for Web services (wsbpel,wsci,bpml) deal with the traditional forms of service aggregation and coordination, while WS-Resource framework (wsrf) deals with accessing services pertaining state concerns (relating both executing applications and the runtime environment). Subjacent to the notion of service coordination is the need to capture dependencies among them (through the workflow concept, for instance), reuse common interaction models, e.g. embodied in common behavioural Patterns like Client/Server, Publish/- Subscriber, Stream, and respond to dynamic events in the system (novel user requests, service failures, etc.). Dynamic adaptation, in particular, is a pressing requirement for current service-based systems due to the increasing trend on XaaS ("everything as a service") which promises to reduce costs on application development and infrastructure support, as is already apparent in the Cloud computing domain. Therefore, the self-adaptive (or dynamic/adaptive) systems present themselves as a solution to the above concerns. However, since they comprise a vast area, this thesis only focus on self-adaptive software. Concretely, we propose a novel model for dynamic interactions, in particular with Stateful Web Services, i.e. services interfacing continued activities. The solution consists on a middleware prototype based on pattern abstractions which may be able to provide (novel) richer interaction models and a few structured dynamic adaptation mechanisms, which are captured in the context of a "Session" abstraction. The middleware was implemented and uses a pre-existent framework supporting Web enabled access to WSNs, and some evaluation scenarios were tested in this setting. Namely, this area was chosen as the application domain that contextualizes this work as it contributes to the development of increasingly important applications needing highresolution and low cost sensing of environment.     A Software Product Line Approach to Ontology-based Recommendations in E-Tourism Systems

    This study tackles two concerns of developers of Tourism Information Systems (TIS). First is the need for more dependable recommendation services due to the intangible nature of the tourism product where it is impossible for customers to physically evaluate the services on offer prior to practical experience. Second is the need to manage dynamic user requirements in tourism due to the advent of new technologies such as the semantic web and mobile computing such that etourism systems (TIS) can evolve proactively with emerging user needs at minimal time and development cost without performance tradeoffs. However, TIS have very predictable characteristics and are functionally identical in most cases with minimal variations which make them attractive for software product line development. The Software Product Line Engineering (SPLE) paradigm enables the strategic and systematic reuse of common core assets in the development of a family of software products that share some degree of commonality in order to realise a significant improvement in the cost and time of development. Hence, this thesis introduces a novel and systematic approach, called Product Line for Ontology-based Tourism Recommendation (PLONTOREC), a special approach focusing on the creation of variants of TIS products within a product line. PLONTOREC tackles the aforementioned problems in an engineering-like way by hybridizing concepts from ontology engineering and software product line engineering. The approach is a systematic process model consisting of product line management, ontology engineering, domain engineering, and application engineering. The unique feature of PLONTOREC is that it allows common TIS product requirements to be defined, commonalities and differences of content in TIS product variants to be planned and limited in advance using a conceptual model, and variant TIS products to be created according to a construction specification. We demonstrated the novelty in this approach using a case study of product line development of e-tourism systems for three countries in the West-African Region of Africa
