    Antenna sensing for wearable applications

    As wearable technologies are growing fast, there is emerging trend to increase functionality of the devices. Antennas which are primarily component in communication systems can offer attractive route forward to minimize the number of components functioning as a sensing element for wearable and flexible electronics. Toward development of flexible antenna as sensing element, this thesis investigates the development of the flexible and printed sensing NFC RFID tag. In this approach, the sensor measurement is supported by the internal sensor and analog-to-digital convertor (ADC) of the NFC transponder. Design optimisation, fabrication and characterization of the printed antenna are described. Besides, the printed antenna, NFC transponder and two simple resistive sensors are integrated to form a fully flexible sensing RFID tag demonstrating applicability in food and health monitoring. This thesis also presents development of two antenna sensors by using functional materials: (i) An inductor-capacitor (LC) resonant tank based wireless pressure sensor on electrospun Poly-L-lactide (PLLA) nanofibers-based substrate. The screen-printed resonant tank (resonant frequency of ~13.56 MHz) consists of a planar inductor connected in parallel with an interdigitated capacitor. Since the substrates is piezoelectric, the capacitance of the interdigitated capacitor varies in response to the applied pressure. To demonstrate a potential application of developed pressure sensor, it was integrated on a compression bandage to monitor sub-bandage pressure. (ii) To investigate the realization of sensing antenna as temperature sensor simple loop antenna is designed and in this study unlike the first study that the sensing element was the substrate, the conductive body of the antenna itself is considered as a functional material. In this case, a small part of a loop antenna which originally was printed using silver paste is replaced by Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene (PEDOT: PSS). The sensing mechanism is based on the resonant frequency shift by varying temperature. While using functional materials is useful for realization of antenna sensor, another approach also is presented by developing stretchable textile-based microstrip antennas on deformable substrate which can measure joint angles of a human limb. The EM characteristics of the meshed patch antenna were compared with its metallic counterpart fabricated with lithography technique. Moreover, the concept of stretchable UHF RFID-based strain sensor is touched in the final part of this thesis

    Applications of MXenes in human-like sensors and actuators

    Human beings perceive the world through the senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, space, and balance. The first five senses are prerequisites for people to live. The sensing organs upload information to the nervous systems, including the brain, for interpreting the surrounding environment. Then, the brain sends commands to muscles reflexively to react to stimuli, including light, gas, chemicals, sound, and pressure. MXene, as an emerging two-dimensional material, has been intensively adopted in the applications of various sensors and actuators. In this review, we update the sensors to mimic five primary senses and actuators for stimulating muscles, which employ MXene-based film, membrane, and composite with other functional materials. First, a brief introduction is delivered for the structure, properties, and synthesis methods of MXenes. Then, we feed the readers the recent reports on the MXene-derived image sensors as artificial retinas, gas sensors, chemical biosensors, acoustic devices, and tactile sensors for electronic skin. Besides, the actuators of MXene-based composite are introduced. Eventually, future opportunities are given to MXene research based on the requirements of artificial intelligence and humanoid robot, which may induce prospects in accompanying healthcare and biomedical engineering applications.     E-skin bimodal sensors for robotics and prosthesis using PDMS molds engraved by laser

    Electronic skin (e-skin) is pursued as a key component in robotics and prosthesis to confer them sensing properties that mimic human skin. For pressure monitoring, a great emphasis on piezoresistive sensors was registered due to the simplicity of sensor design and readout mechanism. For higher sensitivity, films composing these sensors may be micro-structured, usually by expensive photolithography techniques or low-cost and low-customizable molds. Sensors commonly present different sensitivities in different pressure ranges, which should be avoided in robotics and prosthesis applications. The combination of pressure sensing and temperature is also relevant for the field and has room for improvement. This work proposes an alternative approach for film micro-structuration based on the production of highly customizable and low-cost molds through laser engraving. These bimodal e-skin piezoresistive and temperature sensors could achieve a stable sensitivity of -6.4 × 10-3 kPa-1 from 1.6 kPa to 100 kPa, with a very robust and reproducible performance over 27,500 cycles of objects grasping and releasing and an exceptionally high temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 8.3%/°C. These results point toward the versatility and high benefit/cost ratio of the laser engraving technique to produce sensors with a suitable performance for robotics and functional prosthesis

    Human and Biological Skin-Inspired Electronic Skins for Advanced Sensory Functions and Multifunctionality

    Department of Energy Engineering (Energy Engineering)The electronic skin (e-skin) technology is an exciting frontier to drive next generation of wearable electronics owing to its high level of wearability to curved human body, enabling high accuracy to harvest information of users and their surroundings. Altough various types of e-skins, based on several signal-transduction modes, including piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, triboelectric modes, have been developed, their performances (i.e. sensitivity, working range, linearity, multifunctionality, etc.) should be improved for the wearable applications. Recently, biomimicry of the human and biological skins has become a great inspiration for realizing novel wearable e-skin systems with exceptional multifunctionality as well as advanced sensory functions. As an ideal sensory organ, tactile sensing capabilities of human skin was emulated for the development of e-skins with enhanced sensor performances. In particular, the unique geometry and systematic sensory system of human skin have driven new opportunities in multifunctional and highly sensitive e-skin applications. In addition, extraordinary architectures for protection, locomotion, risk indication, and camouflage in biological systems provide great possibilities for second skin applications on user-interactive, skin-attachable, and ultrasensitive e-skins, as well as soft robots. Benefitting from their superior perceptive functions and multifunctionality, human and biological skins-inspired e-skins can be considered to be promising candidates for wearable device applications, such as body motion tracking, healthcare devices, acoustic sensor, and human machine interfaces (HMI). This thesis covers our recent studies about human and biological skin-inspired e-skins for advanced sensory functions and multifunctionality. First, chapter 1 highlights various types of e-skins and recent research trends in bioinspired e-skins mimicking perceptive features of human and biological skins. In chapter 2, we demonstrate highly sensitive and tactile-direction-sensitive e-skin based on human skin-inspired interlocked microdome structures. Owing to the stress concentration effect, the interlocked e-skin experiences significant change of contact area between the interlocked microdomes, resulting in high pressure sensitivity. In addition, because of the different deformation trends between microstructures in mutual contact, the interlocked e-skin can differentiate and decouple sensor signals under different directional forces, such as pressure, tensile strain, shear, and bending. In chapter 3, interlocked e-skins were designed with multilayered geometry. Although interlocked e-skin shows highly sensitive pressure sensing performances, their pressure sensing range is narrow and pressure sensitivity continuously decreases with increasing pressure level. The multilayer interlocked microdome geometry can enhance the pressure-sensing performances of e-skins, such as sensitivity, working range, and linearity. As another approach of e-skin with multilayered geometry, we demonstrate multilayered e-skin based on conductivity-gradient conductive materials in chapter 4. The conducive polymer composites with different conductivity were coated on the microdome pattern and designed as interlocked e-skin with coplanar electrode design, resulting in exceptionally high pressure-sensing performances compared with previous literatures. In chapter 5, inspired by responsive color change in biological skins, we developed mechanochromic e-skin with a hierarchical nanoparticle-in-micropore architecture. The novel design of hierarchical structure enables effective stress concentration at the interface between nanoparticle and porous structure, resulting in impressive color change under mechanical stimuli. In chapter 6, we emulate ultrahigh temperature sensitivity of human and snake skin for temperature-sensitive e-skin. The thermoresponsive composite based on semi-crystalline polymer, temperature sensor shows ultrahigh temperature sensitivity near the melting point of semi-crystalline polymer. In addition, integration of thermochromic composite, mimicking biological skins, enables dual-mode temperature sensors by electrical and colorimetric sensing capabilities. Finally, in chapter 7, we summarize this thesis along with future perspective that should be considered for next-generation e-skin electronics.     Development of Multifunctional E-skin Sensors

    Electronic skin (e-skin) is a hot topic due to its enormous potential for health monitoring, functional prosthesis, robotics, and human-machine-interfaces (HMI). For these applications, pressure and temperature sensors and energy harvesters are essential. Their performance may be tuned by their films micro-structuring, either through expensive and time-consuming photolithography techniques or low-cost yet low-tunability approaches. This PhD thesis aimed to introduce and explore a new micro-structuring technique to the field of e-skin – laser engraving – to produce multifunctional e-skin devices able to sense pressure and temperature while being self-powered. This technique was employed to produce moulds for soft lithography, in a low-cost, fast, and highly customizable way. Several parameters of the technique were studied to evaluate their impact in the performance of the devices, such as moulds materials, laser power and speed, and design variables. Amongst the piezoresistive sensors produced, sensors suitable for blood pressure wave detection at the wrist [sensitivity of – 3.2 kPa-1 below 119 Pa, limit of detection (LOD) of 15 Pa], general health monitoring (sensitivity of 4.5 kPa-1 below 10 kPa, relaxation time of 1.4 ms, micro-structured film thickness of only 133 µm), and robotics and functional prosthesis (sensitivity of – 6.4 × 10-3 kPa-1 between 1.2 kPa and 100 kPa, stable output over 27 500 cycles) were obtained. Temperature sensors with micro-cones were achieved with a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 2.3 %/°C. Energy harvesters based on micro-structured composites of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and zinc tin oxide (ZnSnO3) nanowires (NWs; 120 V and 13 µA at > 100 N) or zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs; 6 V at 2.3 N) were produced as well.     Flexible pressure sensors via engineering microstructures for wearable human-machine interaction and health monitoring applications

    Flexible pressure sensors capable of transducing pressure stimuli into electrical signals have drawn extensive attention owing to their potential applications for human-machine interaction and healthcare monitoring. To meet these application demands, engineering microstructures in the pressure sensors are an efficient way to improve key sensing performances, such as sensitivity, linear sensing range, response time, hysteresis, and durability. In this review, we provide an overview of the recent advances in the fabrication and application of high-performance flexible pressure sensors via engineering microstructures. The implementation mechanisms and fabrication strategies of microstructures including micropatterned, porous, fiber-network, and multiple microstructures are systematically presented. The applications of flexible pressure sensors with microstructures in the fields of wearable human-machine interaction, and ex vivo and in vivo healthcare monitoring are comprehensively discussed. Finally, the outlook and challenges in the future improvement of flexible pressure sensors toward practical applications are presented

    New trends in 4D printing: A critical review

    In a variety of industries, Additive Manufacturing has revolutionized the whole design-fabrication cycle. Traditional 3D printing is typically employed to produce static components, which are not able to fulfill the dynamic structures requirements and relevant applications such as soft grippers, self-assembly systems, and smart actuators. To address this limitation, an innovative technology has emerged and is called “4D printing”. It processes smart materials by using 3D printing for fabricating smart structures that can be reconfigured by applying different inputs such as heat, humidity, magnetic, electricity, light etc. At present, 4D printing is still a growing technology and it presents numerous challenges regarding materials, design, simulation, fabrication processes, applied strategies and reversibility.
