Acceptability of the transitional wearable companion “+me” in typical children: a pilot study
This work presents the results of the first experimentation of +me-the first prototype of
Transitional Wearable Companion–run on 15 typically developed (TD) children with ages
between 8 and 34 months. +me is an interactive device that looks like a teddy bear that
can be worn around the neck, has touch sensors, can emit appealing lights and sounds,
and has input-output contingencies that can be regulated with a tablet via Bluetooth.
The participants were engaged in social play activities involving both the device and
an adult experimenter. +me was designed with the objective of exploiting its intrinsic
allure as an attractive toy to stimulate social interactions (e.g., eye contact, turn taking,
imitation, social smiles), an aspect potentially helpful in the therapy of Autism Spectrum
Disorders (ASD) and other Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). The main purpose
of this preliminary study is to evaluate the general acceptability of the toy by TD children,
observing the elicited behaviors in preparation for future experiments involving children
with ASD and other PDD. First observations, based on video recording and scoring,
show that +me stimulates good social engagement in TD children, especially when their
age is higher than 24 months
The Whole World in Your Hand: Active and Interactive Segmentation
Object segmentation is a fundamental problem
in computer vision and a powerful resource for
development. This paper presents three embodied approaches to the visual segmentation of objects. Each approach to segmentation is aided
by the presence of a hand or arm in the proximity of the object to be segmented. The first
approach is suitable for a robotic system, where
the robot can use its arm to evoke object motion. The second method operates on a wearable system, viewing the world from a human's
perspective, with instrumentation to help detect
and segment objects that are held in the wearer's
hand. The third method operates when observing
a human teacher, locating periodic motion (finger/arm/object waving or tapping) and using it
as a seed for segmentation. We show that object segmentation can serve as a key resource for
development by demonstrating methods that exploit high-quality object segmentations to develop
both low-level vision capabilities (specialized feature detectors) and high-level vision capabilities
(object recognition and localization)
Integrating Olfaction in a Robotic Telepresence Loop
In this work we propose enhancing a typical
robotic telepresence architecture by considering olfactory and wind flow information in addition to the common audio and video channels. The objective is to expand the range of applications where robotics telepresence can be applied, including those related to the detection of volatile chemical substances (e.g. land-mine detection, explosive deactivation, operations
in noxious environments, etc.). Concretely, we analyze how the sense of smell can be integrated in the telepresence loop, covering the digitization of the gases and wind flow
present in the remote environment, the transmission through
the communication network, and their display at the user location. Experiments under different environmental conditions are presented to validate the proposed telepresence system when

Smart Computing and Sensing Technologies for Animal Welfare: A Systematic Review
Animals play a profoundly important and intricate role in our lives today.
Dogs have been human companions for thousands of years, but they now work
closely with us to assist the disabled, and in combat and search and rescue
situations. Farm animals are a critical part of the global food supply chain,
and there is increasing consumer interest in organically fed and humanely
raised livestock, and how it impacts our health and environmental footprint.
Wild animals are threatened with extinction by human induced factors, and
shrinking and compromised habitat. This review sets the goal to systematically
survey the existing literature in smart computing and sensing technologies for
domestic, farm and wild animal welfare. We use the notion of \emph{animal
welfare} in broad terms, to review the technologies for assessing whether
animals are healthy, free of pain and suffering, and also positively stimulated
in their environment. Also the notion of \emph{smart computing and sensing} is
used in broad terms, to refer to computing and sensing systems that are not
isolated but interconnected with communication networks, and capable of remote
data collection, processing, exchange and analysis. We review smart
technologies for domestic animals, indoor and outdoor animal farming, as well
as animals in the wild and zoos. The findings of this review are expected to
motivate future research and contribute to data, information and communication
management as well as policy for animal welfare
Comics, robots, fashion and programming: outlining the concept of actDresses
This paper concerns the design of physical languages for controlling and programming robotic consumer products. For this purpose we explore basic theories of semiotics represented in the two separate fields of comics and
fashion, and how these could be used as resources in the development of new physical languages. Based on these theories, the design concept of actDresses is defined, and supplemented by three example scenarios of how the concept can be used for controlling, programming, and
predicting the behaviour of robotic systems
Rehabilitative devices for a top-down approach
In recent years, neurorehabilitation has moved from a "bottom-up" to a "top down" approach. This change has also involved the technological devices developed for motor and cognitive rehabilitation. It implies that during a task or during therapeutic exercises, new "top-down" approaches are being used to stimulate the brain in a more direct way to elicit plasticity-mediated motor re-learning. This is opposed to "Bottom up" approaches, which act at the physical level and attempt to bring about changes at the level of the central neural system. Areas covered: In the present unsystematic review, we present the most promising innovative technological devices that can effectively support rehabilitation based on a top-down approach, according to the most recent neuroscientific and neurocognitive findings. In particular, we explore if and how the use of new technological devices comprising serious exergames, virtual reality, robots, brain computer interfaces, rhythmic music and biofeedback devices might provide a top-down based approach. Expert commentary: Motor and cognitive systems are strongly harnessed in humans and thus cannot be separated in neurorehabilitation. Recently developed technologies in motor-cognitive rehabilitation might have a greater positive effect than conventional therapies
A cane-based low cost sensor to implement attention mechanisms in telecare robots
Telepresence robots have been recently used for
Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA). Since the robot
can not track a person continuously, there are several strategies
to decide when to check them, from cyclic checks to simple
requests from users and/or caregivers. In order to adapt to the
user needs and condition, it is preferable to perform CGA as
soon as regularities appear. However, this requires detection
of potential issues in users to offer immediate service. In this
work we propose a new low cost force sensor system to detect
user’s condition and attract attention of CGA robots, so they
can perform a full examination on a need basis. The main
advantages of this system are: i) it can be attached to any
standard commercial cane; ii) its power consumption is very
reduced; and iii) it provides continuous information as long as
the user walks. It has been tested with several elderly volunteers
in care facilities. Results have proven that the sensor readings
