Fault Management in DC Microgrids:A Review of Challenges, Countermeasures, and Future Research Trends

    Get PDF
The significant benefits of DC microgrids have instigated extensive efforts to be an alternative network as compared to conventional AC power networks. Although their deployment is ever-growing, multiple challenges still occurred for the protection of DC microgrids to efficiently design, control, and operate the system for the islanded mode and grid-tied mode. Therefore, there are extensive research activities underway to tackle these issues. The challenge arises from the sudden exponential increase in DC fault current, which must be extinguished in the absence of the naturally occurring zero crossings, potentially leading to sustained arcs. This paper presents cut-age and state-of-the-art issues concerning the fault management of DC microgrids. It provides an account of research in areas related to fault management of DC microgrids, including fault detection, location, identification, isolation, and reconfiguration. In each area, a comprehensive review has been carried out to identify the fault management of DC microgrids. Finally, future trends and challenges regarding fault management in DC-microgrids are also discussed

DC arc fault detection methods in MEA distribution systems

    Get PDF
Direct current (DC) for primary power distribution is a promising solution that is being explored by aircraft system integrators for MEA applications to enable the paralleling of non-synchronized engine off-take generators, and to enable the reduction of energy conversion stages required to supply electronically actuated loads. However, a significant challenge in the use of DC systems is the reliable detection of arc faults. Arcing presents a significant fire risk to aircraft and their presence can result in critical system damage and potentially fatal conditions. Series arc faults in DC systems are particularly challenging to detect as the associated reduction in system current eliminates the use of conventional overcurrent and current differential methods for fault detection. This paper provides an overview of series arc faults in DC systems and presents both simulation and hardware results to illustrate key trends, characteristics and discriminating features. It also presents a comprehensive review of arc fault detection and diagnosis techniques that have been proposed for a wide range of aerospace and other applications. The paper concludes with a discussion on the unique challenges and opportunities for the application of both deterministic and probabilistic methods in MEA systems

Power Quality Management and Classification for Smart Grid Application using Machine Learning

The Efficient Wavelet-based Convolutional Transformer network (EWT-ConvT) is proposed to detect power quality disturbances in time-frequency domain using attention mechanism. The support of machine learning further improves the network accuracy with synthetic signal generation and less system complexity under practical environment. The proposed EWT-ConvT can achieve 94.42% accuracy which is superior than other deep learning models. The detection of disturbances using EWT-ConvT can also be implemented into smart grid applications for real-time embedded system development

Artificial neural networks and their applications to intelligent fault diagnosis of power transmission lines

Over the past thirty years, the idea of computing based on models inspired by human brains and biological neural networks emerged. Artificial neural networks play an important role in the field of machine learning and hold the key to the success of performing many intelligent tasks by machines. They are used in various applications such as pattern recognition, data classification, stock market prediction, aerospace, weather forecasting, control systems, intelligent automation, robotics, and healthcare. Their architectures generally consist of an input layer, multiple hidden layers, and one output layer. They can be implemented on software or hardware. Nowadays, various structures with various names exist for artificial neural networks, each of which has its own particular applications. Those used types in this study include feedforward neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and general regression neural networks. Increasing the number of layers in artificial neural networks as needed for large datasets, implies increased computational expenses. Therefore, besides these basic structures in deep learning, some advanced techniques are proposed to overcome the drawbacks of original structures in deep learning such as transfer learning, federated learning, and reinforcement learning. Furthermore, implementing artificial neural networks in hardware gives scientists and engineers the chance to perform high-dimensional and big data-related tasks because it removes the constraints of memory access time defined as the von Neuman bottleneck. Accordingly, analog and digital circuits are used for artificial neural network implementations without using general-purpose CPUs. In this study, the problem of fault detection, identification, and location estimation of transmission lines is studied and various deep learning approaches are implemented and designed as solutions. This research work focuses on the transmission lines’ datasets, their faults, and the importance of identification, detection, and location estimation of them. It also includes a comprehensive review of the previous studies to perform these three tasks. The application of various artificial neural networks such as feedforward neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and general regression neural networks for identification, detection, and location estimation of transmission line datasets are also discussed in this study. Some advanced methods based on artificial neural networks are taken into account in this thesis such as the transfer learning technique. These methodologies are designed and applied on transmission line datasets to enable the scientist and engineers with using fewer data points for the training purpose and wasting less time on the training step. This work also proposes a transfer learning-based technique for distinguishing faulty and non-faulty insulators in transmission line images. Besides, an effective design for an activation function of the artificial neural networks is proposed in this thesis. Using hyperbolic tangent as an activation function in artificial neural networks has several benefits including inclusiveness and high accuracy

Characterization of DC series arc faults in PV systems based on current low frequency spectral analysis

    Get PDF
This work presents an experimental study focused on the characterization of series arc faults in direct current (DC) photovoltaic (PV) systems. The aim of the study is to identify some relevant characteristics of arcing current, which can be obtained by means of low frequency spectral analysis of current signal. On field tests have been carried out on a real PV system, in accordance with some tests requirements of UL 1699B Standard for protection devices against PV DC arc faults. Arcing and non-arcing current signals are acquired and compared and the behavior of a set of indicators proposed by authors is analyzed. Different measurement equipment have been used, in order to study the impact of both measurement transducers and data acquisition systems on proposed indicators effectiveness. Presented results show that the considered indicators are suitable for detecting the arc presence even with commercial devices normally used for smart metering applications

The electrical energy industry is undergoing dramatic changes: massive deployment of renewables, increasing share of DC networks at transmission and distribution levels, and at the same time, a continuing reduction in conventional synchronous generation, all contribute to a situation where a variety of technical and economic challenges emerge. As the society’s reliance on electrical power continues to increase as a result of international decarbonisation commitments, the need for secure and uninterrupted delivery of electrical energy to all customers has never been greater. Power system protection plays an important enabling role in future decarbonized energy systems. This book includes ten papers covering a wide range of topics related to protection system problems and solutions, such as adaptive protection, protection of HVDC and LVDC systems, unconventional or enhanced protection methods, protection of superconducting transmission cables, and high voltage lightning protection. This volume has been edited by Adam Dyśko, Senior Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, UK, and Dimitrios Tzelepis, Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde
