Water Pollution Detection Based on Hypothesis Testing in Sensor Networks
Water pollution detection is of great importance in water conservation. In this paper, the water pollution detection problems of the network and of the node in sensor networks are discussed. The detection problems in both cases of the distribution of the monitoring noise being normal and nonnormal are considered. The pollution detection problems are analyzed based on hypothesis testing theory firstly; then, the specific detection algorithms are given. Finally, two implementation examples are given to illustrate how the proposed detection methods are used in the water pollution detection in sensor networks and prove the effectiveness of the proposed detection methods
Self-Calibration Methods for Uncontrolled Environments in Sensor Networks: A Reference Survey
Growing progress in sensor technology has constantly expanded the number and
range of low-cost, small, and portable sensors on the market, increasing the
number and type of physical phenomena that can be measured with wirelessly
connected sensors. Large-scale deployments of wireless sensor networks (WSN)
involving hundreds or thousands of devices and limited budgets often constrain
the choice of sensing hardware, which generally has reduced accuracy,
precision, and reliability. Therefore, it is challenging to achieve good data
quality and maintain error-free measurements during the whole system lifetime.
Self-calibration or recalibration in ad hoc sensor networks to preserve data
quality is essential, yet challenging, for several reasons, such as the
existence of random noise and the absence of suitable general models.
Calibration performed in the field, without accurate and controlled
instrumentation, is said to be in an uncontrolled environment. This paper
provides current and fundamental self-calibration approaches and models for
wireless sensor networks in uncontrolled environments
Designing of Real-time Communication Method to Monitor Water Quality using WSN Based on IOT
Data accuracy has always been the essential and foremost requirement of any communication. A Real-time Water quality-monitoring system (WQMS) needs high-level data accuracy to process the water perfectly for the desired usage in any specific purpose. Exponential growth in man-made processes, human activities, Industrialization, and economic growth along with depleting safe water resources has made the water pollution issue a foremost threat to human survival and human civilisation as a whole. The Conventional WQMS lacks in providing data accuracy while testing and analysing the water samples at sites due to improper data transmission, human intervention, instrument node working and calibration issues. Therefore, monitoring the quality of the water is essential with a prime focus on data accuracy through proper testing, data analysis and data transmission methods to provide real-time data accuracy. In this research work, an IOT-based wireless sensor network (WSN) is proposed that uses mesh networking to connect the sensor nodes and message queuing telemetry transfer (MQTT) protocol to send the acquired data to a cloud server ADDA Fruit IO. ESP32 standalone microcontroller with in-built Wi-Fi is used as a transceiver on sensor nodes and master nodes. As far as sensor and master node power is concerned, a self-adapting power generation system is incorporated using solar power and water energy harvesting techniques. The sensor nodes are calibrated as per WHO standards using deionized water and buffer capsules. Five random samples are collected from river water, pond water, Borewell water, R.O water and Municipal committee water to analyse the proposed system’s accuracy. The accuracy test and analysis is done using statistical tools on water sample measurements by the proposed sensor node, and the same is compared with the actual certified instrument, hardware manual-based measurement, Laboratory value check and transmitted value on Cloud Server. The proposed WQMS is designed to measure various WQM parameters i.e. Total Dissolve Solid (TDS), pH, Temperature and turbidity and to ensure data accuracy

Development of a Network of Accurate Ozone Sensing Nodes for Parallel Monitoring in a Site Relocation Study
Recent technological advances in both air sensing technology and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity have enabled the development and deployment of remote monitoring networks of air quality sensors. The compact size and low power requirements of both sensors and IoT data loggers allow for the development of remote sensing nodes with power and connectivity versatility. With these technological advancements, sensor networks can be developed and deployed for various ambient air monitoring applications. This paper describes the development and deployment of a monitoring network of accurate ozone (O3) sensor nodes to provide parallel monitoring in an air monitoring site relocation study. The reference O3 analyzer at the station along with a network of three O3 sensing nodes was used to evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of O3 across four Southern California communities in the San Bernardino Mountains which are currently represented by a single reference station in Crestline, CA. The motivation for developing and deploying the sensor network in the region was that the single reference station potentially needed to be relocated due to uncertainty that the lease agreement would be renewed. With the implication of siting a new reference station that is also a high O3 site, the project required the development of an accurate and precise sensing node for establishing a parallel monitoring network at potential relocation sites. The deployment methodology included a pre-deployment co-location calibration to the reference analyzer at the air monitoring station with post-deployment co-location results indicating a mean absolute error (MAE) < 2 ppb for 1-h mean O3 concentrations. Ordinary least squares regression statistics between reference and sensor nodes during post-deployment co-location testing indicate that the nodes are accurate and highly correlated to reference instrumentation with R2 values > 0.98, slope offsets < 0.02, and intercept offsets < 0.6 for hourly O3 concentrations with a mean concentration value of 39.7 ± 16.5 ppb and a maximum 1-h value of 94 ppb. Spatial variability for diurnal O3 trends was found between locations within 5 km of each other with spatial variability between sites more pronounced during nighttime hours. The parallel monitoring was successful in providing the data to develop a relocation strategy with only one relocation site providing a 95% confidence that concentrations would be higher there than at the current site
Smart streetlights: a feasibility study
The world's cities are growing. The effects of population growth and urbanisation mean that more people are living in cities than ever before, a trend set to continue. This urbanisation poses problems for the future. With a growing population comes more strain on local resources, increased traffic and congestion, and environmental decline, including more pollution, loss of green spaces, and the formation of urban heat islands. Thankfully, many of these stressors can be alleviated with better management and procedures, particularly in the context of road infrastructure. For example, with better traffic data, signalling can be smoothed to reduce congestion, parking can be made easier, and streetlights can be dimmed in real time to match real-world road usage. However, obtaining this information on a citywide scale is prohibitively expensive due to the high costs of labour and materials associated with installing sensor hardware. This study investigated the viability of a streetlight-integrated sensor system to affordably obtain traffic and environmental information. This investigation was conducted in two stages: 1) the development of a hardware prototype, and 2) evaluation of an evolved prototype system.
In Stage 1 of the study, the development of the prototype sensor system was conducted over three design iterations. These iterations involved, in iteration 1, the live deployment of the prototype system in an urban setting to select and evaluate sensors for environmental monitoring, and in iterations 2 and 3, deployments on roads with live and controlled traffic to develop and test sensors for remote traffic detection. In the final iteration, which involved controlled passes of over 600 vehicle, 600 pedestrian, and 400 cyclist passes, the developed system that comprised passive-infrared motion detectors, lidar, and thermal sensors, could detect and count traffic from a streetlight-integrated configuration with 99%, 84%, and 70% accuracy, respectively. With the finalised sensor system design, Stage 1 showed that traffic and environmental sensing from a streetlight-integrated configuration was feasible and effective using on-board processing with commercially available and inexpensive components.
In Stage 2, financial and social assessments of the developed sensor system were conducted to evaluate its viability and value in a community. An evaluation tool for simulating streetlight installations was created to measure the effects of implementing the smart streetlight system. The evaluation showed that the on-demand traffic-adaptive dimming enabled by the smart streetlight system was able to reduce the electrical and maintenance costs of lighting installations. As a result, a 'smart' LED streetlight system was shown to outperform conventional always-on streetlight configurations in terms of financial value within a period of five to 12 years, depending on the installation's local traffic characteristics. A survey regarding the public acceptance of smart streetlight systems was also conducted and assessed the factors that influenced support of its applications. In particular, the Australia-wide survey investigated applications around road traffic improvement, streetlight dimming, and walkability, and quantified participants' support through willingness-to-pay assessments to enable each application. Community support of smart road applications was generally found to be positive and welcomed, especially in areas with a high dependence on personal road transport, and from participants adversely affected by spill light in their homes.
Overall, the findings of this study indicate that our cities, and roads in particular, can and should be made smarter. The technology currently exists and is becoming more affordable to allow communities of all sizes to implement smart streetlight systems for the betterment of city services, resource management, and civilian health and wellbeing. The sooner that these technologies are embraced, the sooner they can be adapted to the specific needs of the community and environment for a more sustainable and innovative future
An Integrated Approach for Characterizing Aerosol Climate Impacts and Environmental Interactions
Aerosols exert myriad influences on the earth's environment and climate, and on human health. The complexity of aerosol-related processes requires that information gathered to improve our understanding of climate change must originate from multiple sources, and that effective strategies for data integration need to be established. While a vast array of observed and modeled data are becoming available, the aerosol research community currently lacks the necessary tools and infrastructure to reap maximum scientific benefit from these data. Spatial and temporal sampling differences among a diverse set of sensors, nonuniform data qualities, aerosol mesoscale variabilities, and difficulties in separating cloud effects are some of the challenges that need to be addressed. Maximizing the long-term benefit from these data also requires maintaining consistently well-understood accuracies as measurement approaches evolve and improve. Achieving a comprehensive understanding of how aerosol physical, chemical, and radiative processes impact the earth system can be achieved only through a multidisciplinary, inter-agency, and international initiative capable of dealing with these issues. A systematic approach, capitalizing on modern measurement and modeling techniques, geospatial statistics methodologies, and high-performance information technologies, can provide the necessary machinery to support this objective. We outline a framework for integrating and interpreting observations and models, and establishing an accurate, consistent, and cohesive long-term record, following a strategy whereby information and tools of progressively greater sophistication are incorporated as problems of increasing complexity are tackled. This concept is named the Progressive Aerosol Retrieval and Assimilation Global Observing Network (PARAGON). To encompass the breadth of the effort required, we present a set of recommendations dealing with data interoperability; measurement and model integration; multisensor synergy; data summarization and mining; model evaluation; calibration and validation; augmentation of surface and in situ measurements; advances in passive and active remote sensing; and design of satellite missions. Without an initiative of this nature, the scientific and policy communities will continue to struggle with understanding the quantitative impact of complex aerosol processes on regional and global climate change and air quality
