    Capacity investigation of on-off keying in noncoherent channel settings at low SNR

    On–off keying (OOK) has repossessed much new research interest to realize green communication for establishing autonomous sensor networks. To realize ultra-low power wireless design, we investigate the minimum energy per bit required for reliable communication of using OOK in a noncoherent channel setting where envelope detection is applied at the receiver. By defining different OOK channels with average transit power constraints, the achievability of the Shannon limit for both cases of using soft and hard decisions at the channel output is evaluated based on the analysis of the capacity per unit-cost at low signal-to-noise ratio. We demonstrate that in phase fading using hard decisions cannot destroy the capacity only if extremely asymmetric OOK inputs are used with a properly chosen threshold. The corresponding pulse-position modulation scheme is explicitly studied and demonstrated to be a Shannon-type solution. Moreover, we also consider a slow Rayleigh fading scenario where the transmitter and receiver have no access to channel realizations.Throughput per unit-cost results are developed to explore the trade-off between power efficiency and channel quality for noncoherent OOK using soft and hard decisions

    Dark signalling and code division multiple access in an optical fibre LAN with a bus topology

    This thesis describes an optical fibre network that uses a bus topology and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). Various potential configurations are analysed and compared and it is shown that a serious limitation of optical CDMA schemes using incoherent correlators is the effect of optical beating due to the presence of multiple incoherent optical signals at the receiver photodiode. The network proposed and analysed in this thesis avoids beating between multiple optical fields because it only uses a single, shared, optical source. It does this through the SLIM (Single Light-source with In-line Modulation) configuration in which there is a continuously-operating light source at the head-end of a folded bus, and modulators at the nodes to impose signals on the optical field in the form of pulses of darkness which propagate along the otherwise continuously bright bus. Optical CDMA can use optical-fibre delay-line correlators as matched filters, and these may be operated either coherently or incoherently.Coherent operation is significantly more complex than incoherent operation, but incoherent correlators introduce further beating even in a SLIM network. A new design of optical delay-line correlator, the hybrid correlator, is therefore proposed, analysed and demonstrated. It is shown to eliminate beating. A model of a complete network predicts that a SLIMbus using optical CDMA with hybrid correlators can be operated at TeraBaud rates with the number of simultaneous users limited by multiple access interference (MAI), determined only by the combinatorics of the code set

    Wagner-like decoding for noncoherent PPM based ultra-low-power communications

    Noncoherent pulse-position modulation (PPM) with simple channel codes has the potential to realize ultra-low power (ULP) wireless design. In this paper, we develop a Wagnerlike decoding rule for single-parity-check and high-rate Reed-Solomon (RS) coded PPM schemes by simply `flipping' the most unreliable received PPM symbol(s) to obtain a good balance between performance and coding complexity. The proposed algorithm can be considered as a list decoding algorithm that first generates a candidate codeword list based on the algebraic structure of the code before applying soft decisions to decode. This approach can result in more power-efficient realizations of the studied schemes. It is shown that our decoding approach can achieve near maximum likelihood decoding performance based on the trellis, while having a significantly lower decoding complexity. In addition, by exploiting the inherent advantage of PPM transmission, it is possible to reduce the candidate list to further simplify the decoding for RS-coded PPM without losing coding gain. This makes the proposed scheme more attractive for ULP communications
