    WEST: A Web Browser for Small Terminals

    We describe WEST, a WEb browser for Small Terminals, that aims to solve some of the problems associated with accessing web pages on hand-held devices. Through a novel combination of text reduction and focus+context visualization, users can access web pages from a very limited display environment, since the system will provide an overview of the contents of a web page even when it is too large to be displayed in its entirety. To make maximum use of the limited resources available on a typical hand-held terminal, much of the most demanding work is done by a proxy server, allowing the terminal to concentrate on the task of providing responsive user interaction. The system makes use of some interaction concepts reminiscent of those defined in the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), making it possible to utilize the techniques described here for WAP-compliant devices and services that may become available in the near future

    An integrated visual framework for the human-Web interface

This paper presents a general framework with a human-Web interface that supports Web design through visual programming and reverse Web engineering through visualization. The paper describes the framework in the context of a Web tool, known as HWIT which has been developed for a pilot study

    Video browsing interfaces and applications: a review

    We present a comprehensive review of the state of the art in video browsing and retrieval systems, with special emphasis on interfaces and applications. There has been a significant increase in activity (e.g., storage, retrieval, and sharing) employing video data in the past decade, both for personal and professional use. The ever-growing amount of video content available for human consumption and the inherent characteristics of video data—which, if presented in its raw format, is rather unwieldy and costly—have become driving forces for the development of more effective solutions to present video contents and allow rich user interaction. As a result, there are many contemporary research efforts toward developing better video browsing solutions, which we summarize. We review more than 40 different video browsing and retrieval interfaces and classify them into three groups: applications that use video-player-like interaction, video retrieval applications, and browsing solutions based on video surrogates. For each category, we present a summary of existing work, highlight the technical aspects of each solution, and compare them against each other

    Contextualizing the blogosphere: A comparison of traditional and novel user interfaces for the web

    In this paper, we investigate how contextual user interfaces affect blog reading experience. Based on a review of previous research, we argue why and how contextualization may result in (H1) enhanced blog reading experiences. In an eyetracking experiment, we tested 3 different web-based user interfaces for information spaces. The StarTree interface (by Inxight) and the Focus-Metaphor interface are compared with a standard blog interface. Information tasks have been used to evaluate and compare task performance and user satisfaction between these three interfaces. We found that both contextual user interfaces clearly outperformed the traditional blog interface, both in terms of task performance as well as user satisfaction. © 2007 Laqua, S., Ogbechie, N. and Sasse, M.     Grammar-Based Interactive Genome Visualization

    Visualization is an indispensable method in the exploration of genomic data. However, the current state of the art in genome browsers – a class of interactive visualization tools – limit the exploration by coupling the visual representations with specific file formats. Because the tools do not support the exploration of the visualization design space, they are difficult to adapt to atypical data. Moreover, although the tools provide interactivity, the implementations are often rudimentary, encumbering the exploration of the data. This thesis introduces GenomeSpy, an interactive genome visualization tool that improves upon the current state of the art by providing better support for exploration. The tool uses a visualization grammar that allows for implementing novel visualization designs, which can display the underlying data more effectively. Moreover, the tool implements GPU-accelerated interactions that better support navigation in the genomic space. For instance, smoothly animated transitions between loci or sample sets improve the perception of causality and help the users stay in the flow of exploration. The expressivity of the visualization grammar and the benefit of fluid interactions are validated with two case studies. The case studies demonstrate visualization of high-grade serous ovarian cancer data at different analysis phases. First, GenomeSpy is being used to create a tool for scrutinizing raw copy-number variation data along with segmentation results. Second, the segmentations along with point mutations are used in a GenomeSpy-based multi-sample visualization that allows for exploring and comparing both multiple data dimensions and samples at the same time. Although the focus has been on cancer research, the tool could be applied to other domains as well

    Visualization Support for Managing Information Overload in the Web Environment

    This research focuses on the information overload problem on the Internet, and proposes a potential remedy to the overload encountered while searching the Web. We developed a system that makes use of clustering and visualization for browsing the results of a typical web search. We built two different (full and fisheye) zooming capabilities into our system, and empirically compared their success with each other as well as with the traditional non-visual presentation method through an experiment. We hypothesize that the visual systems will lead to higher success than the text-based system, and that the fisheye zooming system will lead to higher success than the full zoom system. The results of our exploratory test provide partial support for our hypotheses. This empirical support and the comments made by the participants in the experiments suggest that our design ideas are promising, and it is worthwhile to further investigate the use of clustering and visualization mechanisms for reducing information overload

    Generating trails automatically, to aid navigation when you revisit an environment

    A new method for generating trails from a person’s movement through a virtual environment (VE) is described. The method is entirely automatic (no user input is needed), and uses string-matching to identify similar sequences of movement and derive the person’s primary trail. The method was evaluated in a virtual building, and generated trails that substantially reduced the distance participants traveled when they searched for target objects in the building 5-8 weeks after a set of familiarization sessions. Only a modest amount of data (typically five traversals of the building) was required to generate trails that were both effective and stable, and the method was not affected by the order in which objects were visited. The trail generation method models an environment as a graph and, therefore, may be applied to aiding navigation in the real world and information spaces, as well as VEs
