    Induced minors and well-quasi-ordering

A graph HH is an induced minor of a graph GG if it can be obtained from an induced subgraph of GG by contracting edges. Otherwise, GG is said to be HH-induced minor-free. Robin Thomas showed that K4K_4-induced minor-free graphs are well-quasi-ordered by induced minors [Graphs without K4K_4 and well-quasi-ordering, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 38(3):240 -- 247, 1985]. We provide a dichotomy theorem for HH-induced minor-free graphs and show that the class of HH-induced minor-free graphs is well-quasi-ordered by the induced minor relation if and only if HH is an induced minor of the gem (the path on 4 vertices plus a dominating vertex) or of the graph obtained by adding a vertex of degree 2 to the complete graph on 4 vertices. To this end we proved two decomposition theorems which are of independent interest. Similar dichotomy results were previously given for subgraphs by Guoli Ding in [Subgraphs and well-quasi-ordering, Journal of Graph Theory, 16(5):489--502, 1992] and for induced subgraphs by Peter Damaschke in [Induced subgraphs and well-quasi-ordering, Journal of Graph Theory, 14(4):427--435, 1990]

Well-Quasi-Order for Permutation Graphs Omitting a Path and a Clique

We consider well-quasi-order for classes of permutation graphs which omit both a path and a clique. Our principle result is that the class of permutation graphs omitting P5P_5 and a clique of any size is well-quasi-ordered. This is proved by giving a structural decomposition of the corresponding permutations. We also exhibit three infinite antichains to show that the classes of permutation graphs omitting {P6,K6}\{P_6,K_6\}, {P7,K5}\{P_7,K_5\}, and {P8,K4}\{P_8,K_4\} are not well-quasi-ordered

    Well-Quasi-Ordering by the Induced-Minor Relation

Robertson and Seymour proved Wagner\u27s Conjecture, which says that finite graphs are well-quasi-ordered by the minor relation. Their work motivates the question as to whether any class of graphs is well-quasi-ordered by other containment relations. This dissertation is concerned with a special graph containment relation, the induced-minor relation. This dissertation begins with a brief introduction to various graph containment relations and their connections with well-quasi-ordering. In the first chapter, we discuss the results about well-quasi-ordering by graph containment relations and the main problems of this dissertation. The graph theory terminology and preliminary results that will be used are presented in the next chapter. The class of graphs that is considered in this research is the class W of graphs that contain neither W4 (a wheel graph with five vertices) and K5\e (a complete graph on five vertices minus an edge) as an induced minor. Chapter 3 is devoted to studying the structure of this class of graphs. A class of graphs is well-quasi-ordered by a containment relation if it contains no infinite antichain, so infinite antichains are important. We construct in Chapter 4 an infinite antichain of W with respect to the induced minor relation and study its important properties in Chapter 5. These properties are used in determining all well-quasi-ordered subclasses of W to reach the main result of Chapter 6

Siblings of Direct Sums of Chains

We prove that a countable direct sum of chains has either one, countably many or else continuum many isomorphism classes of siblings. This proves Thomass\'e's conjecture for such structures. Further, we show that a direct sum of chains of any cardinality has one or infinitely many siblings, up to isomorphism.Comment: 15 page
