This project is based on several UMTS network feature validation with the aim to provide an end-to-end in-depth knowledge overview gained in parallel in the areas of radio network mobility processes (cell camping and inter-system handover), Quality of Service improvement for HSPA data users and transport network evolution towards the All-IP era.Hardware and software validation is a key step in the relationship between the mobile network operator and the vendor. Through this verification process, while executing that functionality or testing a specific hardware, the difference between the actual result and expected result can be better understood and, in turn, this in-depth knowledge acquisition is translated into a tailored usage of the product in the operator’s live network. As a result, validation helps in building a better product as per the customer’s requirement and helps satisfying their needs, which positively impacts in the future evolution of the vendor product roadmap implementation process for a specific customer. This project is based on several Universal Mobile Telecommunication Services (UMTS) network feature validation with the aim to provide an end-to-end in-depth knowledge overview gained in parallel in the areas of radio network mobility processes (cell camping and inter-system handover), Quality of Service improvement for High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSPA) data users and transport network evolution towards the All-IP era.

During the last two decades, the world of the mobile communications grew a lot, as a consequence of the increasing necessity of people to communicate. Now, the mobile communications still need to improve for satisfies the user demands. The new enhancement of UMTS in concrete HSDPA and HSUPA is one of these improvements that the society needs. HSDPA and HSUPA which together are called HSPA, give to the users higher data rates in downlink and uplink. The higher data rates permit to the operators give more different types of services and at the same time with better quality. As a result, people can do several new applications with their mobile terminals like applications that before a computer and internet connection were required, now it is possible to do directly with the mobile terminal. This thesis consists in study these new technologies denominated HSDPA and HSUPA and thus know better the last tendencies in the mobile communications. Also it has a roughly idea about the future tendencies

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third-generation mobile communications system that supports wireless wideband multimedia applications. This paper investigates the video quality attained in streaming MPEG-4 video over UMTS networks using an integrated tool environment, which comprises an MPEG-4 encoder/decoder, a network simulator and video quality evaluation tools. The benefit of such an integrated tool environment is that it allows the evaluation of real video sources compressed using an MPEG-4 encoder. Simulation results show that UMTS Radio Link Control (RLC) outperforms the unacknowledged mode. The latter mode provides timely delivery but no error recovery. The acknowledged mode can deliver excellent perceived video quality for RLC block error rates up to 30% utilizing a playback buffer at the streaming client. Based on the analysis of the performance results, a self-adaptive RLC acknowledged mode protocol is proposed

Macro Diversity Combining Optimization in HSPA flat architecture

This thesis, Macro Diversity Combining Optimization in High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) flat architecture, concentrates on analyzing implementation alternatives of Marco Diversity Combining (MDC) in fiat architecture. When centralized elements, like Radio Network Controller (RNC), are removed from the architecture, centralized functionalities need to be implemented differently. One of the most important centralized functionality is Macro Diversity Combining which collects traffic from multiple base stations and improves radio performance like bit rate and coverage area. When this functionality is implemented inside base station traffic needs to be sent between base stations. Traffic between base stations creates new requirements for transport network and potentially also increases operator transport cost. In short, if MDC is fully implemented, traffic between base stations is maximized and opposite, if MDC is left out, radio performance is reduced. The thesis starts with the overview introduction of Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) network. Here we discuss the architecture of the UMTS packets switched network, and the main functionalities of the Radio Resource Management (RRM): power control and handover control. A deeper look is taken into evolution of 3GPP packet access namely High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Data Access (HSUPA) plus the relevant HSDPA cell change and HSUPA handovers are covered. A short glance is also taken into the gains introduced by MDC. In this thesis four proposals presented in 3GPP to improve the MDC with regards to utilization of transport network, implementation complexity, radio performance, latency and amount of additions to existing 3GPP specifications are evaluated. Finally, an implementation alternative for MDC optimization in flat architecture is presented based on the proposals in 3GPP

Recent advancement in System Architecture Evolution (SAE) has opened the door for the deployment of femtocells on a large scale. Deployment of femtocells in the existing macrocell networks and in 4G networks will significantly increase because femtocell offers increase coverage and capacity in both home and office environments. Hence it is likely that these low-power home based access points are going to change the landscape of mobile technology and the networking business in the coming years. This thesis work offers a deep insight into the mobile communication system architecture evolution and typically explains femtocellular aspects in the evolution of Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) architecture. This research work mainly focuses on architectural variations of 3G and 4G femtocells along with the operational functionality of Local IP Access (LIPA). LIPA introduces the functionality in femtocells to access a home Local Area Network (LAN) and enable customers to use the Internet through Internet-enabled devices. Hence users have the capability to have simultaneous access to the operator's network as well as having access to their own home LAN. The way LIPA works is explained How it can create problems for femtocells deployment and what solutions LIPA offers for providing easy femtocell configurations. With the help of the extensive study about LIPA-enabled femtocells, different scenarios are discussed and two different solutions are proposed both for 3G and 4G femtocells. For maintaining higher data rates, 3G and 4G systems require a good coverage area to increase system performance. But research results suggest that two-thirds of consumers suffer from inadequate indoor signal penetration which actually leads to poor coverage for consumers, who do not enjoy the full data capacity as guaranteed. 4G systems will facilitate high speed data services, but poor coverage and interference will definitely diminish the quality of real-time applications and will significantly slow down high speed data services. The aim of this thesis is to propose di_erent logical indoor 4G femtocell architectures based on 3GPP specifications that will also be capable of providing LIPA functionality

Mobiliteetti on yksi WCDMA-teknologian menestyksen avaintekijöistä. Saumattoman liikkuvuuden ylläpitämiseksi radioresurssien hallinnan algoritmit ovat tärkeässä roolissa verkon hallinnassa. Yhdessä pääsyvalvonnan, kuormavalvonnan, pakettiskedulerin, resurssimanagerin ja tehovalvonnan kanssa kanavanvaihtoalgoritmit vastaavat laadukkaan, katkeamattoman yhteyden ylläpidosta. Nämä algoritmit on toteutettu radioverkko-ohjaimen (RNC) ohjelmistossa. Ohjelmiston elinkaaren aikana ohjelmiston eri osissa kohdataan erilaisia haasteita. Mobility is the key success area in WCDMA technology. To maintain seamless mobility, Radio Resource Management algorithms are essential in network management. Together with Admission Control, Load Control, Packet Scheduler, Resource Manager and Power Control algorithms, Handover Control algorithms are responsible for high quality seamless communication. These algorithms take place in the Radio Network Controller software. In software life-cycle there can be challenges related with different software program blocks. Other than software problems there can also be radio network planning problems, hardware problems and user-equipment related problems. Those issues have to be analyzed by experienced R&D engineers. Usually it is not straightforward to investigate what is the root cause. Because of this reason troubleshooting tools play a vital role in software development. This thesis analyzes the existing troubleshooting solutions in NSN-WCDMA-Control Plane-Handover Algorithm team and proposes enhanced solutions for those needs. As a result of this thesis, some of the enhanced solutions are implemented and analyses for the other solutions are provided. Development of troubleshooting tools and methodology will continue in the software development team after the completion of this thesis
