The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11277-013-1048-5In this paper, the multiclass downlink capacity and the interference statistics of the sectors of a cigar-shaped microcells using wideband code-division multiple-access with soft handover mode are analyzed. The two-slope propagation model with log-normal shadowing is used in the analysis where a model of 8 cigar-shaped microcells is utilized. The performance of the downlink is studied for different [sector range R, standard deviation of the shadowing (σ1 and σ2) and propagation exponents (s1 and s2)]. It is found that increasing the sector range from 500 to 1,000 m will increase the sector downlink capacity. Also, it is found that increasing the value of the propagation parameters (σ1 and σ2) will reduce the downlink sector capacity. It is noticed that, the effect of changing the propagation exponent s1 is null while increasing the propagation exponent s2 will increase the downlink capacit

Nowadays, developed and emerging countries are investing in infrastructures. In a world constantly being globalized, people are increasing their travels for business and leisure purposes. This is the main reason why it is necessary to have good communications inside and outside of countries. High speed railways can have a leading role in this task. This means of transport is considered the safest and can reach speeds ranging between 250 and 500km/h making it compete with airplanes over medium length distances. Each time there is greater investment in this form of transport and manufacturing processes become more modern and faster. However, the communications systems currently used are falling behind the modern standards. This is the main reason for making this project. This document proposes to substitute the actual communication systems in high speed railways for LTE standard. 4G standard is now used around the world and its quality and throughput is well known on both an international and national level and at urban and rural scale for reaching 100Mbps at peak rate. Applying LTE in high speed railway networks is a good solution for substituting the old communication systems but before doing so, a previous study is necessary. This study is going to be embodied throughout this document and the reasons behind it being a good solution will be revealed. In doing so, it is very important to understand and apply all the factors that affect the signal. As a conclusion, the content of this document aims to be a good reference for future researchers and designers due to the analysis and the results that are going to be carried out. In summary, this document aims to be a preliminary study for the future implementation of LTE in high speed railways. Key words- LTE, 4G, cellular communications, Hig
