    Coding of details in very low bit-rate video systems

    In this paper, the importance of including small image features at the initial levels of a progressive second generation video coding scheme is presented. It is shown that a number of meaningful small features called details should be coded, even at very low data bit-rates, in order to match their perceptual significance to the human visual system. We propose a method for extracting, perceptually selecting and coding of visual details in a video sequence using morphological techniques. Its application in the framework of a multiresolution segmentation-based coding algorithm yields better results than pure segmentation techniques at higher compression ratios, if the selection step fits some main subjective requirements. Details are extracted and coded separately from the region structure and included in the reconstructed images in a later stage.     Force transmission in a packing of pentagonal particles

    We perform a detailed analysis of the contact force network in a dense confined packing of pentagonal particles simulated by means of the contact dynamics method. The effect of particle shape is evidenced by comparing the data from pentagon packing and from a packing with identical characteristics except for the circular shape of the particles. A counterintuitive finding of this work is that, under steady shearing, the pentagon packing develops a lower structural anisotropy than the disk packing. We show that this weakness is compensated by a higher force anisotropy, leading to enhanced shear strength of the pentagon packing. We revisit "strong" and "weak" force networks in the pentagon packing, but our simulation data provide also evidence for a large class of "very weak" forces carried mainly by vertex-to-edge contacts. The strong force chains are mostly composed of edge-to-edge contacts with a marked zig-zag aspect and a decreasing exponential probability distribution as in a disk packing

    Volumetric Medical Images Visualization on Mobile Devices

    Volumetric medical images visualization is an important tool in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Through history, one of the most dificult tasks for Medicine Specialists has been the accurate location of broken bones and of the damaged tissues during Chemotherapy treatment, among other applications; like techniques used in Neurological Studies. Thus these situations enhance the need of visualization in Medicine. New technologies, the improvement and development of new hardware as well as software and the updating of old ones for graphic applications have resulted in specialized systems for medical visualization. However the use of these techniques in mobile devices has been poor due to its low performance. In our work, we propose a client-server scheme, where the model is compressed in the server side and is reconstructed in a nal thin-client device. The technique restricts the natural density values to achieve good bone visualization in medical models, transforming the rest of the data to zero. Our proposal uses a tridimensional Haar Wavelet Function locally applied inside units blocks of 16x16x16, similar to the Wavelet Based 3D Compression Scheme for Interactive Visualization of Very Large Volume Data approach. We also implement a quantization algorithm which handles error coeficients according to the frequency distributions of these coe cients. Finally, we made an evaluation of the volume visualization; on current mobile devices .We present the speci cations for the implementation of our technique in the Nokia n900 Mobile Phone

    Stress-strain behavior and geometrical properties of packings of elongated particles

    We present a numerical analysis of the effect of particle elongation on the quasistatic behavior of sheared granular media by means of the Contact Dynamics method. The particle shapes are rounded-cap rectangles characterized by their elongation. The macroscopic and microstructural properties of several packings subjected to biaxial compression are analyzed as a function of particle elongation. We find that the shear strength is an increasing linear function of elongation. Performing an additive decomposition of the stress tensor based on a harmonic approximation of the angular dependence of branch vectors, contact normals and forces, we show that the increasing mobilization of friction force and the associated anisotropy are key effects of particle elongation. These effects are correlated with partial nematic ordering of the particles which tend to be oriented perpendicular to the major principal stress direction and form side-to-side contacts. However, the force transmission is found to be mainly guided by cap-to-side contacts, which represent the largest fraction of contacts for the most elongated particles. Another interesting finding is that, in contrast to shear strength, the solid fraction first increases with particle elongation, but declines as the particles become more elongated. It is also remarkable that the coordination number does not follow this trend so that the packings of more elongated particles are looser but more strongly connected.Comment: Submited to Physical Review

    From Capture to Display: A Survey on Volumetric Video

    Volumetric video, which offers immersive viewing experiences, is gaining increasing prominence. With its six degrees of freedom, it provides viewers with greater immersion and interactivity compared to traditional videos. Despite their potential, volumetric video services poses significant challenges. This survey conducts a comprehensive review of the existing literature on volumetric video. We firstly provide a general framework of volumetric video services, followed by a discussion on prerequisites for volumetric video, encompassing representations, open datasets, and quality assessment metrics. Then we delve into the current methodologies for each stage of the volumetric video service pipeline, detailing capturing, compression, transmission, rendering, and display techniques. Lastly, we explore various applications enabled by this pioneering technology and we present an array of research challenges and opportunities in the domain of volumetric video services. This survey aspires to provide a holistic understanding of this burgeoning field and shed light on potential future research trajectories, aiming to bring the vision of volumetric video to fruition.Comment: Submitte
