    An Energy Efficient Power Converter for Zero Power Wearable Devices

    Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's and epilepsy requires monitoring a subject's development of symptoms through electroencephalography (EEG) signals over long periods. Wearable devices enable convenient monitoring of biosignals, unlike complex and costly hospital equipment. The key to achieving a fit and forgettable wearable device is to increase its operating cycle and decrease its size and weight. Instead of batteries, which limit the life cycle of electronic devices and set their form factor, body heat and environmental light can power wearable devices through energy-scavenging technologies. The harvester transducers should be tailored according to on the application and the sensor placement. This leaves a wide variety of transducers with an extensive range of impedances and voltages. To realize an autonomous wearable device, the power converter energy harvester, has to be very efficient and maintain its efficiency despite potential transducer replacement or variations in environmental conditions. This thesis presents a detailed design of an efficient integrated power converter for use in an autonomous wearable device. The design is based on the examination of both power losses and power transfer in the power converter. The efficiency bound of the converter is derived from the specifications of its transducer. The tuning ranges for the reconfigurable parameters are extracted to keep the converter efficient with variations in the transducer specifications. With the efficient design and the manual tuning of the reconfigurable parameters, the converter can work optimally with different types of transducers, and keeps its efficiency in the conversion of low voltages from the harvesters. Measurements of the designed converter demonstrate an efficiency of higher than 50% and 70% with two different transducers having an open-circuit voltage as low as 20 mV and 100 mV, respectively. The power converter should be able to reconfigure itself without manual tunings to keep its efficiency despite changes in the harvesters' specifications. The second portion of this dissertation addresses this issue with a proposed design methodology to implement a control section. The control section adjusts the converter's reconfigurable parameters by examining the power transfer and loss and through concurrent closed loops. The concurrent loops working together raise a serious concern regarding stability. The system is designed and analyzed in the time domain with the state-space averaging (SSA) model to address the stability issue. The ultra-low-power control section obtained from the SSA model estimates the power and loss with a reasonable accuracy, and adjusts the timings in a stable manner. The entire control section consumes only 30 nW dynamic power at 10 kHz. The control section tunes the converter's speed or its working frequency depending on the available power. The frequency clocks the entire architecture, which is designed asynchronously; therefore, the power consumption of the system depends on the power available from the transducer. The system is implemented using 0.18 µm CMOS technology. For an input as low as 7 mV, the converter is not only functional but also has an efficiency of more than 40%. The efficiency can reach 70% with an input voltage of 50 mV. The system operates in a range of just a few of millivolts to half a volt with ample efficiencies. It can work at an optimal point with different transducers and environmental conditions

    Power efficient and power attacks resistant system design and analysis using aggressive scaling with timing speculation

    Growing usage of smart and portable electronic devices demands embedded system designers to provide solutions with better performance and reduced power consumption. Due to the new development of IoT and embedded systems usage, not only power and performance of these devices but also security of them is becoming an important design constraint. In this work, a novel aggressive scaling based on timing speculation is proposed to overcome the drawbacks of traditional DVFS and provide security from power analysis attacks at the same time. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is proven to be the most suitable technique for power efficiency in processor designs. Due to its promising benefits, the technique is still getting researchers attention to trade off power and performance of modern processor designs. The issues of traditional DVFS are: 1) Due to its pre-calculated operating points, the system is not able to suit to modern process variations. 2) Since Process Voltage and Temperature (PVT) variations are not considered, large timing margins are added to guarantee a safe operation in the presence of variations. The research work presented here addresses these issues by employing aggressive scaling mechanisms to achieve more power savings with increased performance. This approach uses in-situ timing error monitoring and recovering mechanisms to reduce extra timing margins and to account for process variations. A novel timing error detection and correction mechanism, to achieve more power savings or high performance, is presented. This novel technique has also been shown to improve security of processors against differential power analysis attacks technique. Differential power analysis attacks can extract secret information from embedded systems without knowing much details about the internal architecture of the device. Simulated and experimental data show that the novel technique can provide a performance improvement of 24% or power savings of 44% while occupying less area and power overhead. Overall, the proposed aggressive scaling technique provides an improvement in power consumption and performance while increasing the security of processors from power analysis attacks.N/

    Design of Frequency divider with voltage vontrolled oscillator for 60 GHz low power phase-locked loops in 65 nm RF CMOS

    Increasing memory capacity in mobile devices, is driving the need of high-data rates equipment. The 7 GHz band around 60 GHz provides the opportunity for multi-gigabit/sec wireless communication. It is a real opportunity for developing next generation of High-Definition (HD) devices. In the last two decades there was a great proliferation of Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) and Frequency Divider (FD) topologies in RF ICs on silicon, but reaching high performance VCOs and FDs operating at 60 GHz is in today's technology a great challenge. A key reason is the inaccuracy of CMOS active and passive device models at mm-W. Three critical issues still constitute research objectives at 60 GHz in CMOS: generation of the Local Oscillator (LO) signal (1), division of the LO signal for the Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) closed loop (2) and distribution of the LO signal (3). In this Thesis, all those three critical issues are addressed and experimentally faced-up: a divide-by-2 FD for a PLL of a direct-conversion transceiver operating at mm-W frequencies in 65 nm RF CMOS technology has been designed. Critical issues such as Process, Voltage and Temperature (PVT) variations, Electromagnetic (EM) simulations and power consumption are addressed to select and design a FD with high frequency dividing range. A 60 GHz VCO is co-designed and integrated in the same die, in order to provide the FD with mm-W input signal. VCOs and FDs play critical roles in the PLL. Both of them constitute the PLL core components and they would need co-design, having a big impact in the overall performance especially because they work at the highest frequency in the PLL. Injection Locking FD (ILFD) has been chosen as the optimum FD topology to be inserted in the control loop of mm-W PLL for direct-conversion transceiver, due to the high speed requirements and the power consumption constraint. The drawback of such topology is the limited bandwidth, resulting in narrow Locking Range (LR) for WirelessHDTM applications considering the impact of PVT variations. A simulation methodology is presented in order to analyze the ILFD locking state, proposing a first divide-by-2 ILFD design with continuous tuning. In order to design a wide LR, low power consumption ILFD, the impacts of various alternatives of low/high Q tank and injection scheme are deeply analysed, since the ILFD locking range depends on the Q of the tank and injection efficiency. The proposed 3-bit dual-mixing 60 GHz divide-by-2 LC-ILFD is designed with an accumulation of switching varactors binary scaled to compensate PVT variations. It is integrated in the same die with a 4-bit 60 GHz LC-VCO. The overall circuit is designed to allow measurements of the singles blocks stand-alone and working together. The co-layout is carried on with the EM modelling process of passives devices, parasitics and transmission lines extracted from the layout. The inductors models provided by the foundry are qualified up to 40 GHz, therefore the EM analysis is a must for post-layout simulation. The PVT variations have been simulated before manufacturing and, based on the results achieved, a PLL scheme PVT robust, considering frequency calibration, has been patented. The test chip has been measured in the CEA-Leti (Grenoble) during a stay of one week. The operation principle and the optimization trade-offs among power consumption, and locking ranges of the final selected ILFD topology have been demonstrated. Even if the experimental results are not completely in agreement with the simulations, due to modelling error and inaccuracy, the proposed technique has been validated with post-measurement simulations. As demonstrated, the locking range of a low-power, discrete tuned divide-by-2 ILFD can be enhanced by increasing the injection efficiency, without the drawbacks of higher power consumption and chip area.     A Flexible, Low-Power, Programmable Unsupervised Neural Network Based on Microcontrollers for Medical Applications

    We present an implementation and laboratory tests of a winner takes all (WTA) artificial neural network (NN) on two microcontrollers (ÎĽC) with the ARM Cortex M3 and the AVR cores. The prospective application of this device is in wireless body sensor network (WBSN) in an on-line analysis of electrocardiograph (ECG) and electromyograph (EMG) biomedical signals. The proposed device will be used as a base station in the WBSN, acquiring and analysing the signals from the sensors placed on the human body. The proposed system is equiped with an analog-todigital converter (ADC), and allows for multi-channel acquisition of analog signals, preprocessing (filtering) and further analysis

    Development and Packaging of Microsystems Using Foundry Services

    Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are a new and rapidly growing field of research. Several advances to the MEMS state of the art were achieved through design and characterization of novel devices. Empirical and theoretical model of polysilicon thermal actuators were developed to understand their behavior. The most extensive investigation of the Multi-User MEMS Processes (MUMPs) polysilicon resistivity was also performed. The first published value for the thermal coefficient of resistivity (TCR) of the MUMPs Poly 1 layer was determined as 1.25 x 10(exp -3)/K. The sheet resistance of the MUMPs polysilicon layers was found to be dependent on linewidth due to presence or absence of lateral phosphorus diffusion. The functional integration of MEMS with CMOS was demonstrated through the design of automated positioning and assembly systems, and a new power averaging scheme was devised. Packaging of MEMS using foundry multichip modules (MCMs) was shown to be a feasible approach to physical integration of MEMS with microelectronics. MEMS test die were packaged using Micro Module Systems MCM-D and General Electric High Density Intercounect and Chip-on-Flex MCM foundries.
