Visualization and Evolution of Software Architectures
Software systems are an integral component of our everyday life as we find them in tools and embedded in equipment all around us. In order to ensure smooth, predictable, and accurate operation of these systems, it is crucial to produce and maintain systems that are highly reliable. A well-designed and well-maintained architecture goes a long way in achieving this goal. However, due to the intangible and often complex nature of software architecture, this task can be quite complicated. The field of software architecture visualization aims to ease this task by providing tools and techniques to examine the hierarchy, relationship, evolution, and quality of architecture components. In this paper, we present a discourse on the state of the art of software architecture visualization techniques. Further, we highlight the importance of developing solutions tailored to meet the needs and requirements of the stakeholders involved in the analysis process
Code Park: A New 3D Code Visualization Tool
We introduce Code Park, a novel tool for visualizing codebases in a 3D
game-like environment. Code Park aims to improve a programmer's understanding
of an existing codebase in a manner that is both engaging and intuitive,
appealing to novice users such as students. It achieves these goals by laying
out the codebase in a 3D park-like environment. Each class in the codebase is
represented as a 3D room-like structure. Constituent parts of the class
(variable, member functions, etc.) are laid out on the walls, resembling a
syntax-aware "wallpaper". The users can interact with the codebase using an
overview, and a first-person viewer mode. We conducted two user studies to
evaluate Code Park's usability and suitability for organizing an existing
project. Our results indicate that Code Park is easy to get familiar with and
significantly helps in code understanding compared to a traditional IDE.
Further, the users unanimously believed that Code Park was a fun tool to work
with.Comment: Accepted for publication in 2017 IEEE Working Conference on Software

Maleku: an evolutionary visual software analytics tool for providing insights into software evolution
Software maintenance is a complex process that requires the understanding and comprehension of software project details. It involves the understanding of the evolution of the software project, hundreds of software components and the relationships among software items in the form of inheritance, interface implementation, coupling and cohesion. Consequently, the aim of evolutionary visual software analytics is to support software project managers and developers during software maintenance. It takes into account the mining of evolutionary data, the subsequent analysis of the results produced by the mining process for producing evolution facts, the use of visualizations supported by interaction techniques and the active participation of users. Hence, this paper proposes an evolutionary visual software analytics tool for the exploration and comparison of project structural, interface implementation and class hierarchy data, and the correlation of structural data with metrics, as well as socio-technical relationships. Its main contribution is a tool that automatically retrieves evolutionary software facts and represent them using a scalable visualization design
Recursion Aware Modeling and Discovery For Hierarchical Software Event Log Analysis (Extended)
This extended paper presents 1) a novel hierarchy and recursion extension to
the process tree model; and 2) the first, recursion aware process model
discovery technique that leverages hierarchical information in event logs,
typically available for software systems. This technique allows us to analyze
the operational processes of software systems under real-life conditions at
multiple levels of granularity. The work can be positioned in-between reverse
engineering and process mining. An implementation of the proposed approach is
available as a ProM plugin. Experimental results based on real-life (software)
event logs demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of the approach and show
the huge potential to speed up discovery by exploiting the available hierarchy.Comment: Extended version (14 pages total) of the paper Recursion Aware

Embedding Spatial Software Visualization in the IDE: an Exploratory Study
Software visualization can be of great use for understanding and exploring a
software system in an intuitive manner. Spatial representation of software is a
promising approach of increasing interest. However, little is known about how
developers interact with spatial visualizations that are embedded in the IDE.
In this paper, we present a pilot study that explores the use of Software
Cartography for program comprehension of an unknown system. We investigated
whether developers establish a spatial memory of the system, whether clustering
by topic offers a sound base layout, and how developers interact with maps. We
report our results in the form of observations, hypotheses, and implications.
Key findings are a) that developers made good use of the map to inspect search
results and call graphs, and b) that developers found the base layout
surprising and often confusing. We conclude with concrete advice for the design
of embedded software maps.Comment: To appear in proceedings of SOFTVIS 2010 conferenc
