    Join Point Designation Diagrams: Eine grafische Darstellungsweise fĂĽr den Entwurf von Join Point Selektionen in der aspektorientierten Softwareentwicklung

    Sharing knowledge about program specifications is a crucial task in collaborative software development. Developers need to be able to properly assess the objectives of the program specification in order to adequately deploy or evolve a piece of program. The specification of join point selections (also known as "pointcuts") in Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) is a piece of a program which frequently tends to grow quite complex, in particular if the join point selections involve selection constraints on the dynamic execution history of the program. In that case, readers of the pointcut specification frequently find themselves confronted with considerable comprehension problems because they need to inspect and realize an intricate and fragmented program specification in order to reconstruct the true objectives of the join point selection. This thesis presents Join Point Designation Diagrams (JPDDs) as a possible solution to the problem. JPDDs are a visual notation that provides an extensive set of join point selection means which are consolidated from a variety of contemporary aspect-oriented programming languages. JPDDs are capable of highlighting different join point selection constraints depending on the conceptual view on program execution which underlies the join point selection. With the help of these means, JPDDs are capable of representing complex join point selections on the dynamic execution of a program in a succinct and concise manner. JPDDs may be used by software developers of different aspect-oriented programming languages to represent their join point selections for the sake of an improved comprehensibility of the join point selections and – thus – for the sake of an easier communication between software developers. This thesis gives empirical evidence that JPDDs indeed facilitate the comprehensibility of join point selections. To do so, it conducts a controlled experiment which compares JPDDs to equivalent pointcut implementations in an aspect-oriented programming language. The experiment shows that JPDDs have a clear benefit over their codified counterparts in most of the case, while only in few cases no such benefit could be measured.Die Kommunikation und der Wissensaustausch zwischen Softwareentwicklern über Programmspezifikationen ist eine essentielle Notwendigkeit in großen Softwareprojekten. Softwareentwickler müssen den Sinn und Zweck eines (Teil)Programms richtig erfassen, bevor sie in der Lage sind, das (Teil)Programm richtig einzubinden bzw. weiterzuentwickeln. Join Point Selektionen in der aspektorientierten Softwareentwicklung (auch "Pointcuts" genannt) sind ein Beispiel für Programmspezifikationen, die schnell komplex werden – insbesondere dann, wenn sie Selektionsbedingungen enthalten, die sich auf die Laufzeitvergangenheit eines Programms beziehen. Die Spezifikationen solcher Join Point Selektionen sind oft schwer zu verstehen, da Softwareentwickler eine Vielzahl kleiner Spezifikationsfragmente und ihre Abhängigkeiten analysieren müssen, bevor sie den Sinn und Zweck einer Join Point Selektion erfassen können. Diese Dissertation präsentiert Join Point Designation Diagrams (JPDDs) als eine Lösung für das Problem. JPDDs sind eine grafische Notation, die eine Vielzahl von Selektionstechniken aus aktuellen aspektorientierten Programmiersprachen vereinigt. JPDDs ermöglichen es, unter Berücksichtigung gängiger konzeptioneller Sichten auf die Programmausführung relevante Selektionsbedingungen besonders hervorzuheben. Dabei stellen JPDDs Bedingungen, die sich auf die Laufzeitvergangenheit eines Programms beziehen, unzersplittert dar. JPDDs können von Softwareentwicklern unterschiedlicher Programmiersprachen benutzt werden, um ihre Join Point Selektionen zu spezifizieren und so das Verständnis der Join Point Selektionen – und damit die Kommunikation und den Wissensaustausch zwischen Softwareentwicklern – zu vereinfachen. Diese Dissertation weist mit Hilfe eines kontrollierten empirischen Experiments nach, dass JPDDs tatsächlich in der Lage sind, das Verständnis von Join Point Selektionen zu vereinfachen. Dazu werden JPDDs mit äquivalenten Pointcut-Spezifikationen in einer aspektorientierten Programmiersprache verglichen. Das Experiment zeigt, dass JPDDs in der Mehrzahl der Fälle vorteilhaft sind. Nur in wenigen Ausnahmen konnte kein Vorteil im Vergleich zu der aspektorientierten Programmiersprache beobachtet werden

    Theory and practice of the ternary relations model of information management

    This thesis proposes a new, highly generalised and fundamental, information-modelling framework called the TRM (Ternary Relations Model). The TRM was designed to be a model for converging a number of differing paradigms of information management, some of which are quite isolated. These include areas such as: hypertext navigation; relational databases; semi-structured databases; the Semantic Web; ZigZag and workflow modelling. While many related works model linking by the connection of two ends, the TRM adds a third element to this, thereby enriching the links with associative meanings. The TRM is a formal description of a technique that establishes bi-directional and dynamic node-link structures in which each link is an ordered triple of three other nodes. The key features that makes the TRM distinct from other triple-based models (such as RDF) is the integration of bi-directionality, functional links and simplicity in the definition and elements hierarchy. There are two useful applications of the TRM. Firstly it may be used as a tool for the analysis of information models, to elucidate connections and parallels. Secondly, it may be used as a “construction kit” to build new paradigms and/or applications in information management. The TRM may be used to provide a substrate for building diverse systems, such as adaptive hypertext, schemaless database, query languages, hyperlink models and workflow management systems. It is, however, highly generalised and is by no means limited to these purposes

    This thesis concerns the issues involved in the development of virtual environments (VEs). VEs are more than virtual reality. We identify four main characteristics of them: graphical interaction, multimodality, interface agents, and multi-user. These characteristics are illustrated with an overview of different classes of VE-like applications, and a number of state-of-the-art VEs. To further define the topic of research, we propose a general framework for VE systems development, in which we identify five major classes of development tools: methodology, guidelines, design specification, analysis, and development environments.     Supporting the Algebra I Curriculum with an Introduction to Computational Thinking Course

    The Louisiana Workforce Commission predicts a 33.6% increase in computer science and mathematical occupations by 2022 and the Bureau of Labor Statistics foresees a 16% increase in computer scientists from 2018-2028. Despite these opportunities for job and financial security, the number of Louisiana students enrolled in a nationally accredited computing course is less than 1%, compared to national leaders California and Texas which have 3% and 3.8% of students respectively. Furthermore, the international assessments of mathematical literacy, PISA and TIMMS, both report American students continue to fall further behind their international peers in mathematics achievement. This thesis rejects these statistics as definitive and attempts to contribute to an expansion of the mathematical libraries of a computational thinking course that a teacher could use to support a standards-based Algebra I course. The framework presented in this thesis supports the Louisiana State University (LSU) STEM Pathway course entitled Introduction to Computational Thinking (ICT). The course introduces students to a systematic problem-solving approach in which they learn to solve problems computationally, that is, through abstraction, decomposition, and pattern recognition. ICT utilizes the functional programming language Haskell in the educational programming environment “CodeWorld” in order to create pictures and animations. Jean Piaget, the great child cognitive development psychologist, proclaimed “The goal of intellectual education is not to know how to repeat or retain ready-made truths”; rather, one becomes educated by “learning to master the truth by oneself” (Piaget, 1973). Because of the graphical outputs that one can easily code in CodeWorld, students have the ability to explore an algebraic concept with a computer programmed model, alongside the textbook’s given table, equation and graph. This thesis provides additional projects for supporting the Algebra I curriculum through LSU’s ICT course and an overview of the history of computing with an emphasis on highlighting some of the attempts that were undertaken within the past 80 years to use computational thinking and programming to support problem solving across disciplines, including the humanities, math and sciences

    Deriving and applying facet views of the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme to enhance subject searching in library OPACs

    Classification is a fundamental tool in the organisation of any library collection for effective information retrieval. Several classifications exist, yet the pioneering Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) still constitutes the most widely used scheme and international de facto standard. Although once used for the dual purpose of physical organisation and subject retrieval in the printed library catalogue, library classification is now relegated to a singular role of shelf location. Numerous studies have highlighted the problem of subject access in library online public access catalogues (OPACs). The library OPAC has changed relatively little since its inception, designed to find what is already known, not discover and explore. This research aims to enhance OPAC subject searching by deriving facets of the DDC and populating these with a library collection for display at a View-based searching OPAC interface. A novel method is devised that enables the automatic deconstruction of complex DDC notations into their component facets. Identifying facets based upon embedded notational components reveals alternative, multidimensional subject arrangements of a library collection and resolves the problem of disciplinary scatter. The extent to which the derived facets enhance users' subject searching perceptions and activities at the OPAC interface is evaluated in a small-scale usability study. The results demonstrate the successful derivation of four fundamental facets (Reference Type, Person Type, Time and Geographic Place). Such facet derivation and deconstruction of Dewey notations is recognised as a complex process, owing to the lack of a uniform notation, notational re-use and the need for distinct facet indicators to delineate facet boundaries. The results of the preliminary usability study indicate that users are receptive to facet-based searching and that the View-based searching system performs equally as well as a current form fill-in interface and, in some cases, provides enhanced benefits.     A Reference Architecture for Service Lifecycle Management – Construction and Application to Designing and Analyzing IT Support

    Service-orientation and the underlying concept of service-oriented architectures are a means to successfully address the need for flexibility and interoperability of software applications, which in turn leads to improved IT support of business processes. With a growing level of diffusion, sophistication and maturity, the number of services and interdependencies is gradually rising. This increasingly requires companies to implement a systematic management of services along their entire lifecycle. Service lifecycle management (SLM), i.e., the management of services from the initiating idea to their disposal, is becoming a crucial success factor. Not surprisingly, the academic and practice communities increasingly postulate comprehensive IT support for SLM to counteract the inherent complexity. The topic is still in its infancy, with no comprehensive models available that help evaluating and designing IT support in SLM. This thesis presents a reference architecture for SLM and applies it to the evaluation and designing of SLM IT support in companies. The artifact, which largely resulted from consortium research efforts, draws from an extensive analysis of existing SLM applications, case studies, focus group discussions, bilateral interviews and existing literature. Formal procedure models and a configuration terminology allow adapting and applying the reference architecture to a company’s individual setting. Corresponding usage examples prove its applicability and demonstrate the arising benefits within various SLM IT support design and evaluation tasks. A statistical analysis of the knowledge embodied within the reference data leads to novel, highly significant findings. For example, contemporary standard applications do not yet emphasize the lifecycle concept but rather tend to focus on small parts of the lifecycle, especially on service operation. This forces user companies either into a best-of-breed or a custom-development strategy if they are to implement integrated IT support for their SLM activities. SLM software vendors and internal software development units need to undergo a paradigm shift in order to better reflect the numerous interdependencies and increasing intertwining within services’ lifecycles.
