Visualization of database structures for information retrieval
This paper describes the Book House system, which is designed to support children's information retrieval in libraries as part of their education. It is a shareware program available on CDâROM or floppy disks, and comprises functionality for database searching as well as for classifying and storing book information in the database. The system concept is based on an understanding of children's domain structures and their capabilities for categorization of information needs in connection with their activities in schools, in school libraries or in public libraries. These structures are visualized in the interface by using metaphors and multimedia technology. Through the use of text, images and animation, the Book House encourages children â even at a very early age â to learn by doing in an enjoyable way, which plays on their previous experiences with computer games. Both words and pictures can be used for searching; this makes the system suitable for all age groups. Even children who have not yet learned to read properly can, by selecting pictures, search for and find those books they would like to have read aloud. Thus, at the very beginning of their school life, they can learn to search for books on their own. For the library community, such a system will provide an extended service which will increase the number of children's own searches and also improve the relevance, quality and utilization of the book collections in the libraries. A market research report on the need for an annual indexing service for books in the Book House format is in preparation by the Danish Library Centre A/S
The self-organizing map as a visual neighbor retrieval method
We have recently introduced rigorous goodness criteria for information visualization by posing it as a visual neighbor retrieval problem, where the task is to find proximate high-dimensional data based only on a low-dimensional display. Standard information retrieval criteria such as precision and recall can then be used for information visualization. We introduced an algorithm, Neighbor Retrieval Visualizer (NeRV), to optimize the total cost of retrieval errors. NeRV was shown to outperform alternative methods, but the SOM was not included in the comparison. In empirical experiments of this paper the SOM turns out to be comparable to the best methods in terms of (smoothed) precision but not on recall. On a related measure called trustworthiness, the SOM outperforms all others. Finally, we suggest that for information visualization tasks the free parameters of the SOM could be optimized for information visualization with cross-validation
Adaptive Visualization for Focused Personalized Information Retrieval
The new trend on the Web has totally changed todays information access environment. The traditional information overload problem has evolved into the qualitative level beyond the quantitative growth. The mode of producing and consuming information is changing and we need a new paradigm for accessing information.Personalized search is one of the most promising answers to this problem. However, it still follows the old interaction model and representation method of classic information retrieval approaches. This limitation can harm the potential of personalized search, with which users are intended to interact with the system, learn and investigate the problem, and collaborate with the system to reach the final goal. This dissertation proposes to incorporate interactive visualization into personalized search in order to overcome the limitation. By combining the personalized search and the interac- tive visualization, we expect our approach will be able to help users to better explore the information space and locate relevant information more efficiently. We extended a well-known visualization framework called VIBE (Visual Information Browsing Environment) and implemented Adaptive VIBE, so that it can fit into the per- sonalized searching environment. We tested the effectiveness of this adaptive visualization method and investigated its strengths and weaknesses by conducting a full-scale user study. We also tried to enrich the user models with named-entities considering the possibility that the traditional keyword-based user models could harm the effectiveness of the system in the context of interactive information retrieval. The results of the user study showed that the Adaptive VIBE could improve the precision of the personalized search system and could help the users to find out more diverse set of information. The named-entity based user model integrated into Adaptive VIBE showed improvements of precision of user annotations while maintaining the level of diverse discovery of information
Natural Language Processing for Information Retrieval and Knowledge Discovery
Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a powerful technology for the vital tasks of information retrieval (IR) and knowledge discovery (KD) which, in turn, feed the visualization systems of the present and future and enable knowledge workers to focus more of their time on the vital tasks of analysis and prediction.published or submitted for publicatio
Supporting the active learning of collaborative database browsing techniques
We describe the implications of a study of database browsing behaviour for the development of a system to support more effective browsing. In particular we consider the importance of collaborative working, both in learning browsing skills and in coâoperating on a shared informationâretrieval task. From our study, we believe that an interface to support collaboration should promote the awareness of the activities of others, better visualization of the information data structures being browsed, and effective communication of the browsing process
Visualization for Information Retrieval based on Fast Search Technology
The core of search engine is information retrieval technique. Using information retrieval system backs more retrieval results, some of them more relevant than other, and some is not relevant. While using search engine to retrieve information has grown very substantially, there remain problems with the information retrieval systems. The interface of the systems does not help them to perceive the precision of these results. It is therefore not surprising that graphical visualizations have been employed in search engines to assist users. The main objective of Internet users is to find the required information with high efficiency and effectiveness. In this paper we present brief sides of information visualization's role in enhancing web information retrieval system as in some of its techniques such as tree view, title view, map view, bubble view and cloud view and its tools such as highlighting and Colored Query Result
