Aerospace medicine and biology: A continuing bibliography with indexes (supplement 331)

Fractals in the Nervous System: conceptual Implications for Theoretical Neuroscience
This essay is presented with two principal objectives in mind: first, to
document the prevalence of fractals at all levels of the nervous system, giving
credence to the notion of their functional relevance; and second, to draw
attention to the as yet still unresolved issues of the detailed relationships
among power law scaling, self-similarity, and self-organized criticality. As
regards criticality, I will document that it has become a pivotal reference
point in Neurodynamics. Furthermore, I will emphasize the not yet fully
appreciated significance of allometric control processes. For dynamic fractals,
I will assemble reasons for attributing to them the capacity to adapt task
execution to contextual changes across a range of scales. The final Section
consists of general reflections on the implications of the reviewed data, and
identifies what appear to be issues of fundamental importance for future
research in the rapidly evolving topic of this review
Multifingered robot hand robot operates using teleoperation
The purpose of research on anthropomorphic dextrous manipulation is to develop
anthropomorphic dextrous robot hand which approximates the versatility and
sensitivity of the human hand by teleoperation methods that will communicate in
master– slave manners. Glove operates as master part and multi-fingered hand as
slave. The communication medium between operator and multi-fingered hand is via
KC-21 Bluetooth wireless modules. Multi-fingered hand developed using 5 volt,
298:1 gear ratio micro metal dc motors which controlled using L293D motor drivers
and actuator controlled the movement of robot hand combined with dextrous human
ability by PIC18F4520 microcontroller. The slave components of 5 fingers designed
with 15 Degree of Freedom (DOF) by 3 DOF for each finger. Fingers design, by
modified IGUS 07-16-038-0 enclosed zipper lead E-Chain® Cable Carrier System,
used in order to shape mimic as human size. FLEX sensor, bend sensing resistance
used for both master and slave part and attached as feedback to the system, in order
to control position configuration. Finally, the intelligence, learning and experience
aspects of the human can be combined with the strength, endurance and speed of the
robot in order to generate proper output of this project

Discrete modes of social information processing predict individual behavior of fish in a group
Individual computations and social interactions underlying collective
behavior in groups of animals are of great ethological, behavioral, and
theoretical interest. While complex individual behaviors have successfully been
parsed into small dictionaries of stereotyped behavioral modes, studies of
collective behavior largely ignored these findings; instead, their focus was on
inferring single, mode-independent social interaction rules that reproduced
macroscopic and often qualitative features of group behavior. Here we bring
these two approaches together to predict individual swimming patterns of adult
zebrafish in a group. We show that fish alternate between an active mode in
which they are sensitive to the swimming patterns of conspecifics, and a
passive mode where they ignore them. Using a model that accounts for these two
modes explicitly, we predict behaviors of individual fish with high accuracy,
outperforming previous approaches that assumed a single continuous computation
by individuals and simple metric or topological weighing of neighbors behavior.
At the group level, switching between active and passive modes is uncorrelated
among fish, yet correlated directional swimming behavior still emerges. Our
quantitative approach for studying complex, multi-modal individual behavior
jointly with emergent group behavior is readily extensible to additional
behavioral modes and their neural correlates, as well as to other species
3D locomotion biomimetic robot fish with haptic feedback
This thesis developed a biomimetic robot fish and built a novel haptic robot fish system based on the kinematic modelling and three-dimentional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) hydrodynamic analysis. The most important contribution is the successful CFD simulation of the robot fish, supporting users in understanding the hydrodynamic properties around it

Network Properties Revealed during Multi-Scale Calcium Imaging of Seizure Activity in Zebrafish.
Seizures are characterized by hypersynchronization of neuronal networks. Understanding these networks could provide a critical window for therapeutic control of recurrent seizure activity, i.e., epilepsy. However, imaging seizure networks has largely been limited to microcircuits in vitro or small "windows" in vivo. Here, we combine fast confocal imaging of genetically encoded calcium indicator (GCaMP)-expressing larval zebrafish with local field potential (LFP) recordings to study epileptiform events at whole-brain and single-neuron levels in vivo. Using an acute seizure model (pentylenetetrazole, PTZ), we reliably observed recurrent electrographic ictal-like events associated with generalized activation of all major brain regions and uncovered a well-preserved anterior-to-posterior seizure propagation pattern. We also examined brain-wide network synchronization and spatiotemporal patterns of neuronal activity in the optic tectum microcircuit. Brain-wide and single-neuronal level analysis of PTZ-exposed and 4-aminopyridine (4-AP)-exposed zebrafish revealed distinct network dynamics associated with seizure and non-seizure hyperexcitable states, respectively. Neuronal ensembles, comprised of coactive neurons, were also uncovered during interictal-like periods. Taken together, these results demonstrate that macro- and micro-network calcium motifs in zebrafish may provide a greater understanding of epilepsy
