    Application of Supercomputer Technologies for Simulation of Socio-Economic Systems

    To date, an extensive experience has been accumulated in investigation of problems related to quality, assessment of management systems, modeling of economic system sustainability. The studies performed have created a basis for formation of a new research area — Economics of Quality. Its tools allow to use opportunities of model simulation for construction of the mathematical models adequately reflecting the role of quality in natural, technical, social regularities of functioning of the complex socioeconomic systems. Extensive application and development of models, and also system modeling with use of supercomputer technologies, on our deep belief, will bring the conducted researches of social and economic systems to essentially new level. Moreover, the current scientific research makes a significant contribution to model simulation of multi-agent social systems and that isn’t less important, it belongs to the priority areas in development of science and technology in our country. This article is devoted to the questions of supercomputer technologies application in public sciences, first of all, — regarding technical realization of the large-scale agent-focused models (AFM). The essence of this tool is that owing to increase in power of computers it became possible to describe the behavior of many separate fragments of a difficult system, as social and economic systems represent. The article also deals with the experience of foreign scientists and practicians in launching the AFM on supercomputers, and also the example of AFM developed in CEMI RAS, stages and methods of effective calculating kernel display of multi-agent system on architecture of a modern supercomputer will be analyzed. The experiments on the basis of model simulation on forecasting the population of St. Petersburg according to three scenarios as one of the major factors influencing the development of social and economic system and quality of life of the population are presented in the conclusion

    Ellogon: A New Text Engineering Platform

    This paper presents Ellogon, a multi-lingual, cross-platform, general-purpose text engineering environment. Ellogon was designed in order to aid both researchers in natural language processing, as well as companies that produce language engineering systems for the end-user. Ellogon provides a powerful TIPSTER-based infrastructure for managing, storing and exchanging textual data, embedding and managing text processing components as well as visualising textual data and their associated linguistic information. Among its key features are full Unicode support, an extensive multi-lingual graphical user interface, its modular architecture and the reduced hardware requirements.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures.     A process model for the design of multi-agent systems

    In this paper, we propose a pragmatic process model for the development of multi-agent system based on the combination of standard software engineering techniques with a special focus on multi-agent systems. The resulting process model is the attempt to make our experience in the design of multi-agent systems available to other system designers. The approach presented in this paper has evolved over several years and it has been successfully applied and refined in different types of multi-agent systems.     A Conceptual Generic Framework to Debugging in the Domain-Specific Modeling Languages for Multi-Agent Systems

    Despite the existence of many agent programming environments and platforms, the developers may still encounter difficulties on implementing Multi-agent Systems (MASs) due to the complexity of agent features and agent interactions inside the MAS organizations. Working in a higher abstraction layer and modeling agent components within a model-driven engineering (MDE) process before going into depths of MAS implementation may facilitate MAS development. Perhaps the most popular way of applying MDE for MAS is based on creating Domain-specific Modeling Languages (DSMLs) with including appropriate integrated development environments (IDEs) in which both modeling and code generation for system-to-be-developed can be performed properly. Although IDEs of these MAS DSMLs provide some sort of checks on modeled systems according to the related DSML\u27s syntax and semantics descriptions, currently they do not have a built-in support for debugging these MAS models. That deficiency causes the agent developers not to be sure on the correctness of the prepared MAS model at the design phase. To help filling this gap, we introduce a conceptual generic debugging framework supporting the design of agent components inside the modeling environments of MAS DSMLs. The debugging framework is composed of 4 different metamodels and a simulator. Use of the proposed framework starts with modeling a MAS using a design language and transforming design model instances to a run-time model. According to the framework, the run-time model is simulated on a built-in simulator for debugging. The framework also provides a control mechanism for the simulation in the form of a simulation environment model

    A Visual Analytics Approach to Debugging Cooperative, Autonomous Multi-Robot Systems' Worldviews

    Autonomous multi-robot systems, where a team of robots shares information to perform tasks that are beyond an individual robot's abilities, hold great promise for a number of applications, such as planetary exploration missions. Each robot in a multi-robot system that uses the shared-world coordination paradigm autonomously schedules which robot should perform a given task, and when, using its worldview--the robot's internal representation of its belief about both its own state, and other robots' states. A key problem for operators is that robots' worldviews can fall out of sync (often due to weak communication links), leading to desynchronization of the robots' scheduling decisions and inconsistent emergent behavior (e.g., tasks not performed, or performed by multiple robots). Operators face the time-consuming and difficult task of making sense of the robots' scheduling decisions, detecting de-synchronizations, and pinpointing the cause by comparing every robot's worldview. To address these challenges, we introduce MOSAIC Viewer, a visual analytics system that helps operators (i) make sense of the robots' schedules and (ii) detect and conduct a root cause analysis of the robots' desynchronized worldviews. Over a year-long partnership with roboticists at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, we conduct a formative study to identify the necessary system design requirements and a qualitative evaluation with 12 roboticists. We find that MOSAIC Viewer is faster- and easier-to-use than the users' current approaches, and it allows them to stitch low-level details to formulate a high-level understanding of the robots' schedules and detect and pinpoint the cause of the desynchronized worldviews.Comment: To appear in IEEE Conference on Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) 202

    Adding debugging support to the Prometheus methodology

    This paper describes a debugger which uses the design artifacts of the Prometheus agent-oriented software engineering methodology to alert the developer testing the system, that a specification has been violated. Detailed information is provided regarding the error which can help the developer in locating its source. Interaction protocols specified during design, are converted to executable Petri net representations. The system can then be monitored at run time to identify situations which do not conform to specified protocols. A process for monitoring aspects of plan selection is also described. The paper then describes the Prometheus Design Tool, developed to support the Prometheus methodology, and presents a vision of an integrated development environment providing full life cycle support for the development of agent systems. The initial part of the paper provides a detailed summary of the Prometheus methodology and the artifacts on which the debugger is based

    Observing the clouds : a survey and taxonomy of cloud monitoring

Date of Acceptance: 10/12/2014Monitoring is an important aspect of designing and maintaining large-scale systems. Cloud computing presents a unique set of challenges to monitoring including: on-demand infrastructure, unprecedented scalability, rapid elasticity and performance uncertainty. There are a wide range of monitoring tools originating from cluster and high-performance computing, grid computing and enterprise computing, as well as a series of newer bespoke tools, which have been designed exclusively for cloud monitoring. These tools express a number of common elements and designs, which address the demands of cloud monitoring to various degrees. This paper performs an exhaustive survey of contemporary monitoring tools from which we derive a taxonomy, which examines how effectively existing tools and designs meet the challenges of cloud monitoring. We conclude by examining the socio-technical aspects of monitoring, and investigate the engineering challenges and practices behind implementing monitoring strategies for cloud computing.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
