Informing Sustainable Standards in 'The Circular Economy' utilising technological and data solutions
In our world of make, use and throw away we are now doing more damage to the planet than good, and this mindset has become unsustainable. One of the solutions to this problem is the âCircular Economyâ (CE). The CE replaces the concept of end-of-life production with restoration of natural systems, innovative design to design out waste and keeping products and materials in circulation for as long as possible.
This research will use data science and statistical information to provide a solid foundation (framework) for standards developers to frame the development of standards for the CE. The research will extend the current CE model by interjecting innovative ideas into areas of the CE process: data analysis, restriction of harmful chemicals removing them from the supply chain, research into Local Value Creation (LVC) and research into Sustainable Development in the CE. The research will investigate how Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging of products and materials provide a realistic way to trace products and materials in a CE management system. It will also expand the knowledge on digitization in standards development by analyzing key data streams connected to the CE in order to inform the standards development community of the need to develop a standard on the CE.
This research will use a mixed methodology by combining quantitative methods (data analysis) and qualitative data (case studies). This will be detailed in Chapter 3 â Methodology. The data collected from the literature review will drive four main Sections and four research questions in Chapter 4.
This research will analyse through Case Studies and research papers the uptake of circular thinking in China and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and use the outcomes positive or negative to show practical applications for this research.The objective conclusion of this research is to provide a framework for a European or International standard in order to fill the gap as no such Standard currently exists European or Internationally that addresses the CE.
A Framework with inclusions from the research will form a usable output from the research. This research will inform or be of interest to the Standards development community, data scientists, Circular Economy practitioners and environmental regulators.
The aim of this research is to provide a framework standard using underlying data and statistical information needed to develop a new Standard on the Circular Economy.
Once a Standard is developed and published it can be used by any organisation or group of organisations, country or individual wishing to manage internally and collectively their activities in order to transition to the CE and the Sustainable Development goal of responsible consumption and production.
This research has produced a framework from which sustainable standards can be developed. The data acquired from using RFID tags imbedded in products allows manufacturers to control and analyse the materials in their products specific to hazardous chemicals. This data can also be used to track the product through the supply chain and onto its product life cycle. The data gathered in the product example in this thesis tracks the potential use of hazardous chemicals in the product, this is important information for endof-life decisions to be made on the product. The data can then be used to develop requirements and testing regimes for circular economy standards.
Having identified some of the main areas of future activity in the CE, this research i.e., the circular economy, data science and standards development will continue to evoke research in the CE for the foreseeable future
Geoarchaeological Approaches to Pictish Settlement Sites: Assessing Heritage at Risk
Due to the poor preservation of Pictish period buildings and the occupation deposits within them, very little is known of daily life in early medieval Scotland. In lowland and coastal areas, Pictish buildings are generally truncated by deep ploughing, coastal erosion, or urban development, while those uncovered in upland areas seem to have no preserved floor deposits for reasons that remain poorly understood. Geoarchaeological techniques are particularly effective in clarifying site formation processes and understanding post-depositional transformations. They are also a powerful research tool for identifying floor deposits, distinguishing their composition, and linking this to daily activities. However, archaeologists are often reluctant to apply geoarchaeological methods if they suspect preservation is poor or stratigraphy is not visible in the field.
This study therefore employs an innovative suite of geoarchaeological techniques to evaluate the preservation of Pictish period buildings and the potential that fragmentary buildings have to reconstruct daily life in early medieval Scotland. Alongside literature analysis and a desk-based comparison with national soil datasets, over 400 sediment samples from three key settlement sites were subjected to integrated soil micromorphology, x-ray fluorescence, magnetic susceptibility, loss-on-ignition, pH, electrical conductivity and microrefuse analysis. The combined data were successful in generating new information about the depositional and post-depositional history of the sites, preservation conditions of the occupation deposits, and activity areas within domestic dwellings. Most significantly, the integrated approach demonstrated that ephemeral and fragmented occupation surfaces retain surviving characteristics of the use of space, even if floors are not preserved well enough to be clearly defined in the field or in thin-section. A partnership with Historic Environment Scotland has channelled this work into research-led guidelines aimed at communicating geoarchaeological methods and principles to a wider audience

Sonic heritage: listening to the past
History is so often told through objects, images and photographs, but the potential of sounds to reveal place and space is often neglected. Our research project âSonic Palimpsestâ1 explores the potential of sound to evoke impressions and new understandings of the past, to embrace the sonic as a tool to understand what was, in a way that can complement and add to our predominant visual understandings. Our work includes the expansion of the Oral History archives held at Chatham Dockyard to include womenâs voices and experiences, and the creation of sonic works to engage the public with their heritage. Our research highlights the social and cultural value of oral history and field recordings in the transmission of knowledge to both researchers and the public. Together these recordings document how buildings and spaces within the dockyard were used and experienced by those who worked there. We can begin to understand the social and cultural roles of these buildings within the community, both past and present
Photogrammetric state of degradation assessment of decorative claddings: the plasterwork of the Maidens' Courtyard (The Royal Alcazar of Seville)

Abstract:
Previous studies and documentation about the state of conservation of architectural or decorative elements are crucial for heritage managers, technicians and researchers to succeed in the maintenance and preservation of the heritage. In this sense, hand tracings, digital drawings, or photographs have traditionally been the methods for alteration and sample mapping. In spite of their effectiveness, these methods have some disadvantages, such as the need for more precision in terms of location, dimensions, quantification and types of alterations. By contrast, high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) models allow us to analyse decorative ancient plasterworks with great precision, offering considerable advantages over traditional tools for heritage documentation. To facilitate stakeholdersâ work and enhance the quality of data collected, this work proposes the use of photogrammetry as a tool for the documentation of polychromed ancient plasterworks, taking the upper frieze of the access door to the Charles V ceiling room in the Royal Alcazar of Seville as a case of study. Thus, the work methodology applied has shown several advantages over previous methods. On the one hand, it was possible to obtain a 2D planimetry from the 3D model; this is an essential step for those responsible for heritage, especially in reports prior to restoration interventions. On the other hand, the 3D model created enables present alterations identification, the location of fissures and cracks in their three dimensions (opening, length and depth), deformations measurement and control, the quantification of mass or polychrome loss, and the detached elements digital reconstruction. In this way, highprecision digital results are quickly obtained and accessible to all the experts involved in the heritage conservation and maintenance plan
Envisioning Transitions. Bodies, buildings, and boundaries
âTransitionâ is the dynamic process of changing state, going beyond, crossing over, and passingâŻfrom one point to the next. The signification of the word is close to that ofâŻevolution, modification,âŻmutation, and transformation, all of which are confined into a strictly restricted timeframe.
Etymologically,âŻâtransitionsâ can be nothing else than temporary: they appear silently, burst, violentlyâŻestablish, and gradually disappear into reality. In their blinding momentariness, âtransitionsâ bearâŻwith them the positive undertone of change and renewal, along with the hopefulness of that whichâŻis unknown.âŻ
If the term âtransitionâ recurs regularly in the contemporary vocabulary ofâŻarchitecture and designâŻcultures, this repetition reveals a period characterized byâŻoverlapping and sequential changes. TheâŻword is without a doubt overused, but not without reason. Indeed, we find ourselves in an unusuallyâŻextended period of consecutive âtransitionsâ, overwhelmingly undefined in temporality andâŻambitions. As we are witnessing societies go through stark demographic, political, economic, andâŻcultural changes, the intersecting problematics (e.g., ecological, digital, pandemic, etc.) form aâŻrather complex topography of change, negatively charged by the instability of dilated time and theâŻuncertainty of undefined destination.
The word is employed with the confidence of a natural process, as if it were a storm, and whileâŻwe affirm our existence in âtransitionâ, we nod our troubled times away.
Whether positively or negatively perceived, âtransitionsâ form bridges between histories.âŻYet, whatâŻdoes it actually mean to be in âtransitionâ?âŻCan we define it as an autonomous and productiveâŻperiod whose importance could go beyond a starting and an ending date? How are âtransitionsââŻimpacting and being impacted by human spaces, the built environment, and design cultures? WhatâŻare some concrete, practical case studies that demonstrate how âtransitionsâ could affect architectureâŻand design cultures while emphasizing the role that these disciplines play in transitionalâŻprocesses?
It is within this backdrop that we put forward the theme of âtransitionââin all its simplicity andâŻcomplexity
Investigation Into the Physical Environmental Correlates of Aggressive Behaviour in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs)
Background:
Physical environmental influences on childhood aggression in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities is a severely under-researched research locus. The aim of this doctorate was to elucidate specific associations between childrenâs developmental environment and aggressive behaviours, using this evidence to reciprocally inform an experimental psychology project to investigate underlying mechanisms. To explore these effects, the programme of study was broadly divided into three reflexive workstreams using diverse research methodologies.
Methods:
In the first workstream, I conducted a systematic review of the current literature examining physical environmental influences on childhood aggressive behaviours in both typically developing children (aged 0 â 18) and those diagnosed with NDDs. The literature on children with NDDs was substantially limited in comparison to peers without NDDs.
The second workstream was comprised of a large-scale secondary data analysis (multiply imputed growth curve modelling) to investigate environmental influences on conduct problems across early development. I used data from the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) to assess how physical environmental metrics, such as neighbourhood greenspace, air pollution, household crowding, and presence of home damp influenced the development and severity of conduct problems in children with (n=8013) and without NDDs (n=155) between the ages of 3 â 11 years.
Finally, building upon evidence from the previous two workstreams, I designed a proof-of-principle psychological experiment to examine the influence of urban nature exposure on children with NDDs. Specifically, simulating a real-world urban greenspace using a Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory (PEARL). This facilitated the ability to manipulate and isolate individual environmental aspects of urban nature exposure (light, sound, and projection). Following ethical review and approval, I recruited 3 children (100% male) with mild and moderate intellectual disability aged between 12 â 15 years (Mean age = 14) attending a local school for children with special educational needs. We examined their physiological reactions to four simulated urban green space aspects (light, sound, landscape projections, and vegetation) against a baseline control condition. I also collected demographic information on parent reported aggressive behaviours, exposure to local greenspace(s), physical and mental health history, medication, and adaptive behaviours (ABAS-3). This research lays the foundation for future large scale experimental paradigms that can disentangle the effects of nature exposure in these children, with the aim of translating these findings into real world therapeutic design interventions and relevant policy changes to improve the quality of the built environment for these children.
Findings:
From articles retrieved from my systematic review I found evidence for the beneficial influences of nature in both populations, and simultaneously negative effects of both noise and air pollution in typically developing children only. Evidence for other environmental aspects such as crowding, music, urbanicity, meteorology, and interior design had either insufficient or inconsistent evidence to extrapolate concreate conclusions. More evidence on the effect of these exposures on child aggression outcomes is recommended. From the analysis of the MCS cohort I found various sociodemographic factors (ethnicity, sex, poverty, family structure, maternal distress) and internal residential conditions were associated with increased childhood conduct problem trajectories in both groups of children. I also discovered potential evidence of a moderating influence effect of intellectual disability on the relationship between spatial density and conduct problems. From the final experimental project, I report preliminary evidence for the influence of urban greenspaces to reduce physiological arousal in children with complex neurodisability profiles. Initial evidence for the hierarchical nature of urban greenspace sensorial aspects was reported, for example: that urban nature soundscapes maybe a more influential environmental stimuli than lighting or landscape projections.
Conclusion:
Drawing together multi-disciplinary research methodologies facilitated the ability to identify disparities in research examining physical environmental determinants of aggression in neurodiverse child populations. Reciprocally, the systematic review and secondary data analysis contributed incrementally to filling this lacuna of research. Using findings from these two work streams, I identified that exploring the potentially therapeutic influences of urban nature exposure on children with neurodevelopmental disorders may provide novel indicators of its aetiological mechanisms. I reported original findings supporting these research aims, elucidating the potential hierarchical nature of urban greenspace elements. This was also the first study of its kind reporting the potential for simulated urban park spaces to reduce physiological arousal in neurodivergent children with aggressive behavioural difficulties
Management Controls for Sustainable Development: Evidence from a Thai Manufacturing Organisation
This thesis aims to empirically investigate the use of management controls in relation to sustainable development within an established manufacturing organisation in Thailand. Situated within the conflicts between formal motivators (e.g., performance measurement and reward systems) which call for economic rationalism and an informally cognitive responsibility for socio-ecological awareness and commitment (Ball and Milne, 2005; Milne, 1996), the existence of formal and informal management controls to support the sustainable development belief and their interplays are examined.
An inductive research approach with Laughlinâs (1991) organisational change framework is drawn upon in the analysis of a single case study. The empirical evidence is collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations and document analysis to investigate the organisation's sustainability discourse.
This study makes important contributions to the extant social and environmental accounting literature, especially concerning management controls. Little research directs towards how organisations integrate their management controls with the sustainable development concept (Lueg and Radlach, 2016) due to its subjective and disputable nature (Ball and Milne, 2005; Gray, 2010; Milne, 1996). This research goes further to unveil the change journey in quantifiable and religious-based management controls within a Thai manufacturing organisation that encountered complex sustainability challenges.
Furthermore, the sustainability concept has been integrated into corporate strategies, organisational culture and key capabilities for value-added activities and innovation. The internal and external disturbances were managed with proper caution and safeguards. The observed formal and informal management controls worked interdependently in line with the organisationâs core values (i.e., interpretive schemes â Laughlin, 1991). These control tools are shown to be built on âmeasure what can be managedâ or achievable-based outcomes with support from multiple specialist work groups
Applications of Molecular Dynamics simulations for biomolecular systems and improvements to density-based clustering in the analysis
Molecular Dynamics simulations provide a powerful tool to study biomolecular systems with atomistic detail. The key to better understand the function and behaviour of these molecules can often be found in their structural variability. Simulations can help to expose this information that is otherwise experimentally hard or impossible to attain. This work covers two application examples for which a sampling and a characterisation of the conformational ensemble could reveal the structural basis to answer a topical research question. For the fungal toxin phalloidinâa small bicyclic peptideâobserved product ratios in different cyclisation reactions could be rationalised by assessing the conformational pre-organisation of precursor fragments. For the C-type lectin receptor langerin, conformational changes induced by different side-chain protonations could deliver an explanation
of the pH-dependency in the proteinâs calcium-binding. The investigations were accompanied by the continued development of a density-based clustering protocol into a respective software package, which is generally well applicable for the use case of extracting conformational states from Molecular Dynamics data
