In vivo measurement of afferent activity with axon-specific calcium imaging.
In vivo calcium imaging from axons provides direct interrogation of afferent neural activity, informing the neural representations that a local circuit receives. Unlike in somata and dendrites, axonal recording of neural activity-both electrically and optically-has been difficult to achieve, thus preventing comprehensive understanding of neuronal circuit function. Here we developed an active transportation strategy to enrich GCaMP6, a genetically encoded calcium indicator, uniformly in axons with sufficient brightness, signal-to-noise ratio, and photostability to allow robust, structure-specific imaging of presynaptic activity in awake mice. Axon-targeted GCaMP6 enables frame-to-frame correlation for motion correction in axons and permits subcellular-resolution recording of axonal activity in previously inaccessible deep-brain areas. We used axon-targeted GCaMP6 to record layer-specific local afferents without contamination from somata or from intermingled dendrites in the cortex. We expect that axon-targeted GCaMP6 will facilitate new applications in investigating afferent signals relayed by genetically defined neuronal populations within and across specific brain regions
SkiMap: An Efficient Mapping Framework for Robot Navigation
We present a novel mapping framework for robot navigation which features a
multi-level querying system capable to obtain rapidly representations as
diverse as a 3D voxel grid, a 2.5D height map and a 2D occupancy grid. These
are inherently embedded into a memory and time efficient core data structure
organized as a Tree of SkipLists. Compared to the well-known Octree
representation, our approach exhibits a better time efficiency, thanks to its
simple and highly parallelizable computational structure, and a similar memory
footprint when mapping large workspaces. Peculiarly within the realm of mapping
for robot navigation, our framework supports realtime erosion and
re-integration of measurements upon reception of optimized poses from the
sensor tracker, so as to improve continuously the accuracy of the map.Comment: Accepted by International Conference on Robotics and Automation

AlphaPilot: Autonomous Drone Racing
This paper presents a novel system for autonomous, vision-based drone racing
combining learned data abstraction, nonlinear filtering, and time-optimal
trajectory planning. The system has successfully been deployed at the first
autonomous drone racing world championship: the 2019 AlphaPilot Challenge.
Contrary to traditional drone racing systems, which only detect the next gate,
our approach makes use of any visible gate and takes advantage of multiple,
simultaneous gate detections to compensate for drift in the state estimate and
build a global map of the gates. The global map and drift-compensated state
estimate allow the drone to navigate through the race course even when the
gates are not immediately visible and further enable to plan a near
time-optimal path through the race course in real time based on approximate
drone dynamics. The proposed system has been demonstrated to successfully guide
the drone through tight race courses reaching speeds up to 8m/s and ranked

Probabilistic Surfel Fusion for Dense LiDAR Mapping
With the recent development of high-end LiDARs, more and more systems are
able to continuously map the environment while moving and producing spatially
redundant information. However, none of the previous approaches were able to
effectively exploit this redundancy in a dense LiDAR mapping problem. In this
paper, we present a new approach for dense LiDAR mapping using probabilistic
surfel fusion. The proposed system is capable of reconstructing a high-quality
dense surface element (surfel) map from spatially redundant multiple views.
This is achieved by a proposed probabilistic surfel fusion along with a
geometry considered data association. The proposed surfel data association
method considers surface resolution as well as high measurement uncertainty
along its beam direction which enables the mapping system to be able to control
surface resolution without introducing spatial digitization. The proposed
fusion method successfully suppresses the map noise level by considering
measurement noise caused by laser beam incident angle and depth distance in a
Bayesian filtering framework. Experimental results with simulated and real data
for the dense surfel mapping prove the ability of the proposed method to
accurately find the canonical form of the environment without further

3D Visual Perception for Self-Driving Cars using a Multi-Camera System: Calibration, Mapping, Localization, and Obstacle Detection
Cameras are a crucial exteroceptive sensor for self-driving cars as they are
low-cost and small, provide appearance information about the environment, and
work in various weather conditions. They can be used for multiple purposes such
as visual navigation and obstacle detection. We can use a surround multi-camera
system to cover the full 360-degree field-of-view around the car. In this way,
we avoid blind spots which can otherwise lead to accidents. To minimize the
number of cameras needed for surround perception, we utilize fisheye cameras.
Consequently, standard vision pipelines for 3D mapping, visual localization,
obstacle detection, etc. need to be adapted to take full advantage of the
availability of multiple cameras rather than treat each camera individually. In
addition, processing of fisheye images has to be supported. In this paper, we
describe the camera calibration and subsequent processing pipeline for
multi-fisheye-camera systems developed as part of the V-Charge project. This
project seeks to enable automated valet parking for self-driving cars. Our
pipeline is able to precisely calibrate multi-camera systems, build sparse 3D
maps for visual navigation, visually localize the car with respect to these
maps, generate accurate dense maps, as well as detect obstacles based on
real-time depth map extraction
A minimalistic approach to appearance-based visual SLAM
This paper presents a vision-based approach to SLAM in indoor / outdoor environments with minimalistic sensing and computational requirements. The approach is based on a graph representation of robot poses, using a relaxation algorithm to obtain a globally consistent map. Each link corresponds to a
relative measurement of the spatial relation between the two nodes it connects. The links describe the likelihood distribution of the relative pose as a Gaussian distribution. To estimate the covariance matrix for links obtained from an omni-directional vision sensor, a novel method is introduced based on the relative similarity of neighbouring images. This new method does not require determining distances to image features using multiple
view geometry, for example. Combined indoor and outdoor experiments demonstrate that the approach can handle qualitatively different environments (without modification of the parameters), that it can cope with violations of the “flat floor assumption” to some degree, and that it scales well with increasing size of the environment, producing topologically correct and geometrically accurate maps at low computational cost. Further experiments demonstrate that the approach is also suitable for combining multiple overlapping maps, e.g. for solving the multi-robot SLAM problem with unknown initial poses
