FraudDroid: Automated Ad Fraud Detection for Android Apps
Although mobile ad frauds have been widespread, state-of-the-art approaches
in the literature have mainly focused on detecting the so-called static
placement frauds, where only a single UI state is involved and can be
identified based on static information such as the size or location of ad
views. Other types of fraud exist that involve multiple UI states and are
performed dynamically while users interact with the app. Such dynamic
interaction frauds, although now widely spread in apps, have not yet been
explored nor addressed in the literature. In this work, we investigate a wide
range of mobile ad frauds to provide a comprehensive taxonomy to the research
community. We then propose, FraudDroid, a novel hybrid approach to detect ad
frauds in mobile Android apps. FraudDroid analyses apps dynamically to build UI
state transition graphs and collects their associated runtime network traffics,
which are then leveraged to check against a set of heuristic-based rules for
identifying ad fraudulent behaviours. We show empirically that FraudDroid
detects ad frauds with a high precision (93%) and recall (92%). Experimental
results further show that FraudDroid is capable of detecting ad frauds across
the spectrum of fraud types. By analysing 12,000 ad-supported Android apps,
FraudDroid identified 335 cases of fraud associated with 20 ad networks that
are further confirmed to be true positive results and are shared with our

Data, Data Everywhere, and Still Too Hard to Link: Insights from User Interactions with Diabetes Apps
For those with chronic conditions, such as Type 1 diabetes, smartphone apps offer the promise of an affordable, convenient, and personalized disease management tool. How- ever, despite significant academic research and commercial development in this area, diabetes apps still show low adoption rates and underwhelming clinical outcomes. Through user-interaction sessions with 16 people with Type 1 diabetes, we provide evidence that commonly used interfaces for diabetes self-management apps, while providing certain benefits, can fail to explicitly address the cognitive and emotional requirements of users. From analysis of these sessions with eight such user interface designs, we report on user requirements, as well as interface benefits, limitations, and then discuss the implications of these findings. Finally, with the goal of improving these apps, we identify 3 questions for designers, and review for each in turn: current shortcomings, relevant approaches, exposed challenges, and potential solutions
Apps vs Devices: Can the usability of mobile apps be decoupled from the device?
In this paper we present a study using subjective measures to examine usability of mobile phone applications running on two different platforms, the OSX iPhone and an O2 Orbit running Windows Mobile operating system.The aim was to enhance the understanding of the influence of devices on mobile application usability.We gathered subjective measures using questionnaires to assess the satisfaction level while using mobile applications installed on two different devices.Results indicate that the device

Evaluating multi-agent conversational interfaces in the early stages of the design process
In this paper we describe a mixed-approach technique to understand user’s perceptions of concepts in the early stage of the design process. We designed an evaluation study to understand desirability of a multi-agent cognitive investment advisor, a Chabot. The study was threefold. First participants watched the video, then chose reaction card adjectives to report their perceptions, and lastly gave their opinions guided by questions about the multi-party dialogue. From this experiment, we gather positive and negative reactions from users that helped to shape the user experience of cognitive investment advisors.Â
Visual-Related Factors in Mobile Iconic Communication
The purpose of this exploratory, sequential, mixed methods design research was to explore current design trends and patterns in mobile application icons by analyzing existing icon elements and principles of design. The process of data collection and data analyses went through three main phases: (a) identify current characteristics and pattern design of existing icons, (b) compare mobile icons across selected application categories to underline how each category was different from the other regarding elements and principles of design used, and (c) explore users’ perceptions about the elements and principles of design and account for how these elements and principles influenced the mobile application user’s interaction. The results of the three phases concluded that in mobile iconic communication, the most impactful elements of design were color and graphics. It was also concluded that the icon’s visual design had a significant impact on mobile usability, interaction, and communication whereby mobile developers were encouraged to design attractive, appealing and easy to recognize icons. The outcomes of this study emphasized the importance of graphic visual-design as a visual representative of the content and category of the application. Further studies are needed to explore the impact of other senses involved in mobile communication
EXTROVERT OR INTROVERT: HOW PERSONALITY MODERATES THE EFFECT OF VISUAL AESTHETICS ON APP ATTRACTIVENESS IN MOBILE APPLICATIONS
We propose a conceptual model for the context of mobile applications (apps) that explains the relationship between perceived visual aesthetics, perceived visual attractiveness, and intention to download. The model predicts that the aesthetics characteristics influence users’ perceived app attractiveness and users’ intention to download the app. It further predicts an interaction effect, where users’ personality types moderate the effect of aesthetics characteristics on perceived app attractiveness. In other words: differences in aesthetics characteristics explain differences in perceived app attractiveness. However, this effect varies for different types of user personality. We explain the model’s grounding in theory, describe the design of a laboratory experiment for empirically testing the model, and explain our manipulations of the aesthetics characteristics along its classic and expressive dimensions. Besides presenting our conceptual model and describing out planned experimental design, this study encourages researchers to further investigate how aesthetics characteristics affect intention formation depending on user personality types
User interface design for mobile-based sexual health interventions for young people: Design recommendations from a qualitative study on an online Chlamydia clinical care pathway
Background: The increasing pervasiveness of mobile technologies has given potential to transform healthcare by facilitating clinical management using software applications. These technologies may provide valuable tools in sexual health care and potentially overcome existing practical and cultural barriers to routine testing for sexually transmitted infections. In order to inform the design of a mobile health application for STIs that supports self-testing and self-management by linking diagnosis with online care pathways, we aimed to identify the dimensions and range of preferences for user interface design features among young people. Methods: Nine focus group discussions were conducted (n=49) with two age-stratified samples (16 to 18 and 19 to 24 year olds) of young people from Further Education colleges and Higher Education establishments. Discussions explored young people's views with regard to: the software interface; the presentation of information; and the ordering of interaction steps. Discussions were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Four over-arching themes emerged: privacy and security; credibility; user journey support; and the task-technology-context fit. From these themes, 20 user interface design recommendations for mobile health applications are proposed. For participants, although privacy was a major concern, security was not perceived as a major potential barrier as participants were generally unaware of potential security threats and inherently trusted new technology. Customisation also emerged as a key design preference to increase attractiveness and acceptability. Conclusions: Considerable effort should be focused on designing healthcare applications from the patient's perspective to maximise acceptability. The design recommendations proposed in this paper provide a valuable point of reference for the health design community to inform development of mobile-based health interventions for the diagnosis and treatment of a number of other conditions for this target group, while stimulating conversation across multidisciplinary communities
