CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
About the nature of Kansei information, from abstract to concrete
Designer’s expertise refers to the scientific fields of emotional design and kansei information. This paper aims to answer to a scientific major issue which is, how to formalize designer’s knowledge, rules, skills into kansei information systems. Kansei can be considered as a psycho-physiologic, perceptive, cognitive and affective process through a particular experience. Kansei oriented methods include various approaches which deal with semantics and emotions, and show the correlation with some design properties. Kansei words may include semantic, sensory, emotional descriptors, and also objects names and product attributes. Kansei levels of information can be seen on an axis going from abstract to concrete dimensions. Sociological value is the most abstract information positioned on this axis. Previous studies demonstrate the values the people aspire to drive their emotional reactions in front of particular semantics. This means that the value dimension should be considered in kansei studies. Through a chain of value-function-product attributes it is possible to enrich design generation and design evaluation processes. This paper describes some knowledge structures and formalisms we established according to this chain, which can be further used for implementing computer aided design tools dedicated to early design. These structures open to new formalisms which enable to integrate design information in a non-hierarchical way. The foreseen algorithmic implementation may be based on the association of ontologies and bag-of-words.AN

This report is the product of the Pardee Center’s work on the Searchlight:Visualization and Analysis of Trend Data project sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)
This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio
The Energy Worker Profiler from Technologies to Skills to Realize Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing
In recent years, the manufacturing sector has been responsible for nearly 55
percent of total energy consumption, inducing a major impact on the global
ecosystem. Although stricter regulations, restrictions on heavy manufacturing
and technological advances are increasing its sustainability, zero-emission and
fuel-efficient manufacturing is still considered a utopian target. In
parallel,companies that have invested in digital innovation now need to align
their internal competencies to maximize their return on investment. Moreover, a
primary feature of Industry 4.0 is the digitization of production processes,
which offers the opportunity to optimize energy consumption. However, given the
speed with which innovation manifests itself, tools capable of measuring the
impact that technology is having on digital and green professions and skills
are still being designed. In light of the above, in this article we present the
Worker Profiler, a software designed to map the skills currently possessed by
workers, identifying misalignment with those they should ideally possess to
meet the renewed demands that digital innovation and environmental preservation
impose. The creation of the Worker Profiler consists of two steps: first, the
authors inferred the key technologies and skills for the area of interest,
isolating those with markedly increasing patent trends and identifying green
and digital enabling skills and occupations. Thus, the software was designed
and implemented at the user-interface level. The output of the self-assessment
is the definition of the missing digital and green skills and the job roles
closest to the starting one in terms of current skills; both the results enable
the definition of a customized retraining strategy. The tool has shown evidence
of being user-friendly, effective in identifying skills gaps and easily
adaptable to other contexts
Role of Semantic web in the changing context of Enterprise Collaboration
In order to compete with the global giants, enterprises are concentrating on
their core competencies and collaborating with organizations that compliment their
skills and core activities. The current trend is to develop temporary alliances of
independent enterprises, in which companies can come together to share skills, core
competencies and resources. However, knowledge sharing and communication
among multidiscipline companies is a complex and challenging problem. In a
collaborative environment, the meaning of knowledge is drastically affected by the
context in which it is viewed and interpreted; thus necessitating the treatment of
structure as well as semantics of the data stored in enterprise repositories. Keeping
the present market and technological scenario in mind, this research aims to propose
tools and techniques that can enable companies to assimilate distributed information
resources and achieve their business goals
