    Visual navigation using a single camera

    We assess the usefulness of monocular recursive motion estimation techniques for vehicle navigation in the absence of a model for the environment. For this purpose we extend a recently proposed recursive motion estimator, the Essential filter, to handle scale estimation. We examine experimentally the accuracy with which the motion and position of the vehicle may be computed on an 8000 frame indoors sequence. The issues of sampling time frequency and number of necessary features in the environment are addressed systematically

    Positional estimation techniques for an autonomous mobile robot

    Techniques for positional estimation of a mobile robot navigation in an indoor environment are described. A comprehensive review of the various positional estimation techniques studied in the literature is first presented. The techniques are divided into four different types and each of them is discussed briefly. Two different kinds of environments are considered for positional estimation; mountainous natural terrain and an urban, man-made environment with polyhedral buildings. In both cases, the robot is assumed to be equipped with single visual camera that can be panned and tilted and also a 3-D description (world model) of the environment is given. Such a description could be obtained from a stereo pair of aerial images or from the architectural plans of the buildings.     Application and evaluation of direct sparse visual odometry in marine vessels

    With the international community pushing for a computer vision based option to the laws requiring a look-out for marine vehicles, there is now a significant motivation to provide digital solutions for navigation using these envisioned mandatory visual sensors. This paper explores the monocular direct sparse odometry algorithm when applied to a typical marine environment. The method uses a single camera to estimate a vessel\u27s motion and position over time and is then compared to ground truth to establish feasibility as both a local and global navigation system. Whilst it was inconsistent in accurately estimating vessel position, it was found that it could consistently estimate the vessel\u27s orientation in the majority of the situations the vessel was tasked with. It is therefore shown that monocular direct sparse odometry is partially suitable as a standalone navigation system and is a strong base for a multi-sensor solution

The definitive version was published in Journal of Field Robotics 30 (2013): 763–783, doi:10.1002/rob.21473.We present a system for automatically building 3-D maps of underwater terrain fusing visual data from a single camera with range data from multibeam sonar. The six-degree of freedom location of the camera relative to the navigation frame is derived as part of the mapping process, as are the attitude offsets of the multibeam head and the on-board velocity sensor. The system uses pose graph optimization and the square root information smoothing and mapping framework to simultaneously solve for the robot’s trajectory, the map, and the camera location in the robot’s frame. Matched visual features are treated within the pose graph as images of 3-D landmarks, while multibeam bathymetry submap matches are used to impose relative pose constraints linking robot poses from distinct tracklines of the dive trajectory. The navigation and mapping system presented works under a variety of deployment scenarios, on robots with diverse sensor suites.     Cooperative monocular-based SLAM for multi-UAV systems in GPS-denied environments

    This work presents a cooperative monocular-based SLAM approach for multi-UAV systems that can operate in GPS-denied environments. The main contribution of the work is to show that, using visual information obtained from monocular cameras mounted onboard aerial vehicles flying in formation, the observability properties of the whole system are improved. This fact is especially notorious when compared with other related visual SLAM configurations. In order to improve the observability properties, some measurements of the relative distance between the UAVs are included in the system. These relative distances are also obtained from visual information. The proposed approach is theoretically validated by means of a nonlinear observability analysis. Furthermore, an extensive set of computer simulations is presented in order to validate the proposed approach. The numerical simulation results show that the proposed system is able to provide a good position and orientation estimation of the aerial vehicles flying in formation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Featureless visual processing for SLAM in changing outdoor environments

    Vision-based SLAM is mostly a solved problem providing clear, sharp images can be obtained. However, in outdoor environments a number of factors such as rough terrain, high speeds and hardware limitations can result in these conditions not being met. High speed transit on rough terrain can lead to image blur and under/over exposure, problems that cannot easily be dealt with using low cost hardware. Furthermore, recently there has been a growth in interest in lifelong autonomy for robots, which brings with it the challenge in outdoor environments of dealing with a moving sun and lack of constant artificial lighting. In this paper, we present a lightweight approach to visual localization and visual odometry that addresses the challenges posed by perceptual change and low cost cameras. The approach combines low resolution imagery with the SLAM algorithm, RatSLAM. We test the system using a cheap consumer camera mounted on a small vehicle in a mixed urban and vegetated environment, at times ranging from dawn to dusk and in conditions ranging from sunny weather to rain. We first show that the system is able to provide reliable mapping and recall over the course of the day and incrementally incorporate new visual scenes from different times into an existing map. We then restrict the system to only learning visual scenes at one time of day, and show that the system is still able to localize and map at other times of day. The results demonstrate the viability of the approach in situations where image quality is poor and environmental or hardware factors preclude the use of visual features

    Ambient Gestures

    We present Ambient Gestures, a novel gesture-based system designed to support ubiquitous ‘in the environment’ interactions with everyday computing technology. Hand gestures and audio feedback allow users to control computer applications without reliance on a graphical user interface, and without having to switch from the context of a non-computer task to the context of the computer. The Ambient Gestures system is composed of a vision recognition software application, a set of gestures to be processed by a scripting application and a navigation and selection application that is controlled by the gestures. This system allows us to explore gestures as the primary means of interaction within a multimodal, multimedia environment. In this paper we describe the Ambient Gestures system, define the gestures and the interactions that can be achieved in this environment and present a formative study of the system. We conclude with a discussion of our findings and future applications of Ambient Gestures in ubiquitous computing
