Is Evaluating Visual Search Interfaces in Digital Libraries Still an Issue?
Although various visual interfaces for digital libraries have been developed
in prototypical systems, very few of these visual approaches have been
integrated into today's digital libraries. In this position paper we argue that
this is most likely due to the fact that the evaluation results of most visual
systems lack comparability. There is no fix standard on how to evaluate visual
interactive user interfaces. Therefore it is not possible to identify which
approach is more suitable for a certain context. We feel that the comparability
of evaluation results could be improved by building a common evaluation setup
consisting of a reference system, based on a standardized corpus with fixed

Spatial audio in small display screen devices
Our work addresses the problem of (visual) clutter in mobile device interfaces. The solution we propose involves the translation of technique-from the graphical to the audio domain-for expliting space in information representation. This article presents an illustrative example in the form of a spatialisedaudio progress bar. In usability tests, participants performed background monitoring tasks significantly more accurately using this spatialised audio (a compared with a conventional visual) progress bar. Moreover, their performance in a simultaneously running, visually demanding foreground task was significantly improved in the eye-free monitoring condition. These results have important implications for the design of multi-tasking interfaces for mobile devices
Experiments on the Richtmyer–Meshkov instability: Small-scale perturbations on a plane interface
This paper reports the results of measurements of the "visual thickness," obtained from flow visualization experiments by the schlieren method, of initially plane interfaces between two gases under impulsive accelerations. It is found that when such interfaces are processed by just one incident shock wave of strength of order Ms=1.5, their thickness increases slowly and they require observation over extended times; their growth rates are found to slow down with time, in agreement with simple theoretical arguments. The observed growth rates of thin interfaces formed by plastic membranes have been found to be substantially smaller than that reported by previous investigators. Also, thick, diffusively smoothed interfaces initially grow much more slowly than the discontinuous ones do. In these experiments, it is found that wall vortices formed by shock wave/boundary-layer interaction at the interface grow much more rapidly than the shock-processed interfaces in the bulk of the fluid. These wall structures can reduce the apparent growth of interfaces by vorticity-induced strain and impair the observation of the relevant interface phenomena
Modality-specific Affective Responses and their Implications for Affective BCI
Reliable applications of multimodal affective brain-computer interfaces (aBCI) require a detailed understanding of the processes involved in emotions. To explore the modality-specific nature of affective responses, we studied neurophysiological responses of 24 subjects during visual, auditory, and audiovisual affect stimulation and obtained their subjective ratings. Coherent with literature, we found modality-specific responses in the EEG: parietal alpha power decreases during visual stimulation and increases during auditory stimulation, whereas more anterior alpha power decreases during auditory stimulation and increases during visual stimulation. Looking at a digital research data archive - Visual interfaces to EASY
In this paper we explore visually the structure of the collection of a
digital research data archive in terms of metadata for deposited datasets. We
look into the distribution of datasets over different scientific fields; the
role of main depositors (persons and institutions) in different fields, and
main access choices for the deposited datasets. We argue that visual analytics
of metadata of collections can be used in multiple ways: to inform the archive
about structure and growth of its collection; to foster collections strategies;
and to check metadata consistency. We combine visual analytics and visual
enhanced browsing introducing a set of web-based, interactive visual interfaces
to the archive's collection. We discuss how text based search combined with
visual enhanced browsing enhances data access, navigation, and reuse.Comment: Submitted to the TPDL 201
Considerations in Designing Human-Computer Interfaces for Elderly People
As computing devices continue to become more heavily integrated into our lives, proper design of human-computer interfaces becomes a more important topic of discussion. Efficient and useful human-computer interfaces need to take into account the abilities of the humans who will be using such interfaces, and adapt to difficulties that different users may face – such as the difficulties that elderly users must deal with. Interfaces that allow for user-specific customization, while taking into account the multiple difficulties that older users might face, can assist the elderly in properly using these newer computing devices, and in doing so possibly achieving a better quality of life through the advanced technological support that these devices offer. In this paper, we explore common problems the elderly face when using computing devices and solutions developed for these problems. Difficulties ultimately fall into several categories: cognition, auditory, haptic, visual, and motor-based troubles. We also present an idea for a new adaptive operating system with advanced customizations that would simplify computing for older users
Factors influencing visual attention switch in multi-display user interfaces: a survey
Multi-display User Interfaces (MDUIs) enable people to take advantage of the different characteristics of different display categories. For example, combining mobile and large displays within the same system enables users to interact with user interface elements locally while simultaneously having a large display space to show data. Although there is a large potential gain in performance and comfort, there is at least one main drawback that can override the benefits of MDUIs: the visual and physical separation between displays requires that users perform visual attention switches between displays. In this paper, we present a survey and analysis of existing data and classifications to identify factors that can affect visual attention switch in MDUIs. Our analysis and taxonomy bring attention to the often ignored implications of visual attention switch and collect existing evidence to facilitate research and implementation of effective MDUIs.Postprin
Sonification of probabilistic feedback through granular synthesis
We describe a method to improve user feedback, specifically the display of time-varying probabilistic information, through asynchronous granular synthesis. We have applied these techniques to challenging control problems as well as to the sonification of online probabilistic gesture recognition. We're using these displays in mobile, gestural interfaces where visual display is often impractical
