Deep Learning based Recommender System: A Survey and New Perspectives
With the ever-growing volume of online information, recommender systems have
been an effective strategy to overcome such information overload. The utility
of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given its widespread adoption in
many web applications, along with its potential impact to ameliorate many
problems related to over-choice. In recent years, deep learning has garnered
considerable interest in many research fields such as computer vision and
natural language processing, owing not only to stellar performance but also the
attractive property of learning feature representations from scratch. The
influence of deep learning is also pervasive, recently demonstrating its
effectiveness when applied to information retrieval and recommender systems
research. Evidently, the field of deep learning in recommender system is
flourishing. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent
research efforts on deep learning based recommender systems. More concretely,
we provide and devise a taxonomy of deep learning based recommendation models,
along with providing a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art. Finally,
we expand on current trends and provide new perspectives pertaining to this new

First impressions: A survey on vision-based apparent personality trait analysis

From the past few years, it also became an attractive research area in visual computing. From the computational point of view, by far speech and text have been the most considered cues of information for analyzing personality. However, recently there has been an increasing interest from the computer vision community in analyzing personality from visual data. Recent computer vision approaches are able to accurately analyze human faces, body postures and behaviors, and use these information to infer apparent personality traits. Because of the overwhelming research interest in this topic, and of the potential impact that this sort of methods could have in society, we present in this paper an up-to-date review of existing vision-based approaches for apparent personality trait recognition. We describe seminal and cutting edge works on the subject, discussing and comparing their distinctive features and limitations. Future venues of research in the field are identified and discussed. Furthermore, aspects on the subjectivity in data labeling/evaluation, as well as current datasets and challenges organized to push the research on the field are reviewed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Listen, Attend, and Walk: Neural Mapping of Navigational Instructions to Action Sequences
We propose a neural sequence-to-sequence model for direction following, a
task that is essential to realizing effective autonomous agents. Our
alignment-based encoder-decoder model with long short-term memory recurrent
neural networks (LSTM-RNN) translates natural language instructions to action
sequences based upon a representation of the observable world state. We
introduce a multi-level aligner that empowers our model to focus on sentence
"regions" salient to the current world state by using multiple abstractions of
the input sentence. In contrast to existing methods, our model uses no
specialized linguistic resources (e.g., parsers) or task-specific annotations
(e.g., seed lexicons). It is therefore generalizable, yet still achieves the
best results reported to-date on a benchmark single-sentence dataset and
competitive results for the limited-training multi-sentence setting. We analyze
our model through a series of ablations that elucidate the contributions of the
