    The National Health and Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Centre conducts its own clinical trials, provides expertise and infrastructure for trials run by other groups, and undertakes research aiming to improve both the conduct of trials and the resulting clinical evidence. Since 1988, when the CTC was set up as a research centre at the University of Sydney, over 60 000 patients have been randomised into its trials. Currently, around 40 active trials — in cancer, cardiovascular disease and neonatology — are being conducted in collaboration with networks of clinical investigators across Australia and elsewhere. The CTC has played a leading role in establishing some of these investigator groups, most recently the Cooperative Trials Group for Neuro-Oncology and the Australasian Lung Cancer Trials Group. Trial investigators also participate in international collaborations to carry out prospective meta-analysis of data from concurrent clinical trials. For example, the NeOProM collaboration has been formed by five cooperating trial groups, involving over 5000 patients, with leadership from the CTC. Developments such as this increase the effi ciency of research and the validity of its fi ndings, resulting in benefi t to patients throughout the world. The CTC also has strong links and partnerships withgovernment and nongovernment organisations and industry. Projects include capacity building for Australian health and research, reviews of evidence to assist government policy making, and methodological research. The CTC’s past research has served the Australian population well, particularly through reduced cardiovascular disease and deaths from heart disease and improved survival and better quality of life for patients with many types of cancer.     The Melbourne art scene and the Victorian artists’ society 1870-2020

    This thesis is a socio-cultural history, utilising the Victorian Artists’ Society as a longitudinal case study to look at the extent to which it has serviced the professional needs of artists. The Victorian Artists’ Society, formed in 1870, is the oldest organisation representing the visual arts in Victoria and, as such, is an appropriate vehicle to examine the discourse between history and the construction of cultural values in the visual arts in Melbourne. The Melbourne ‘art scene’ has existed since Victoria’s proclamation as a separate colony in 1851. During the greater part of this time, the Victorian Artists’ Society functioned as a meeting and an exhibition space for visual artists. Although it is Australia’s second oldest continuous organisation representing visual artists, the Society has been uncontroversial and largely ignored by academics as a focus of research in its own right. Notwithstanding, the two groups subject of the most academic attention and research, namely the Australian Academy of Art and the Contemporary Art Society, were announced and formed within its walls, with many of their key proponents members of the Society. Researching extensive archival records, this thesis explores the relationship that existed between the Society and Melbourne’s art community throughout its 150-year history. It historically interrogates to what extent the Society has been a harbinger for change. Through a study of organisations and events impacting the Melbourne art scene, the thesis argues the relevance of the Society to professional and amateur artists today. It reviews how societies, and clubs in general, once servicing the needs of all artists, have evolved into a more general function, and what role the emergence of the commercial gallery system played as the main platform for the success of the artist. Finally, it examines what sustains, inspires, and informs contemporary professional artists working in Melbourne today.Doctor of Philosoph

    Measuring knowledge sharing processes through social network analysis within construction organisations

    The construction industry is a knowledge intensive and information dependent industry. Organisations risk losing valuable knowledge, when the employees leave them. Therefore, construction organisations need to nurture opportunities to disseminate knowledge through strengthening knowledge-sharing networks. This study aimed at evaluating the formal and informal knowledge sharing methods in social networks within Australian construction organisations and identifying how knowledge sharing could be improved. Data were collected from two estimating teams in two case studies. The collected data through semi-structured interviews were analysed using UCINET, a Social Network Analysis (SNA) tool, and SNA measures. The findings revealed that one case study consisted of influencers, while the other demonstrated an optimal knowledge sharing structure in both formal and informal knowledge sharing methods. Social networks could vary based on the organisation as well as the individuals’ behaviour. Identifying networks with specific issues and taking steps to strengthen networks will enable to achieve optimum knowledge sharing processes. This research offers knowledge sharing good practices for construction organisations to optimise their knowledge sharing processes

    NEUVis: Comparing Affective and Effective Visualisation

    Data visualisations are useful for providing insight from complex scientific data. However, even with visualisation, scientific research is difficult for non-scientists to comprehend. When developed by designers in collaboration with scientists, data visualisation can be used to articulate scientific data in a way that non-experts can understand. Creating human-centred visualisations is a unique challenge, and there are no frameworks to support their design. In response, this thesis presents a practice-led study investigating design methods that can be used to develop Non-Expert User Visualisations (NEUVis), data visualisations for a general public, and the response that people have to different kinds of NEUVis. For this research, two groups of ten users participated in quantitative studies, informed by Yvonna Lincoln and Egon Guba’s method of Naturalistic Inquiry, which asked non-scientists to express their cognitive and emotional response to NEUVis using different media. The three different types of visualisations were infographics, 3D animations and an interactive installation. The installation used in the study, entitled 18S rDNA, was developed and evaluated as part of this research using John Zimmerman’s Research Through Design methodology. 18S rDNA embodies the knowledge and design methods that were developed for this research, and provided an opportunity for explication of the entire NEUVis design process. The research findings indicate that developing visualisations for the non-expert audience requires a new process, different to the way scientists visualise data. The result of this research describes how creative practitioners collaborate with primary researchers and presents a new human-centred design thinking model for NEUVis. This model includes two design tools. The first tool helps designers merge user needs with data they wish to visualise. The second tool helps designers take that merged information and begin an iterative, user-centred design process

    PURPOSE: Anemia is associated with poor tumor control. It was previously observed that accelerated radiotherapy combined with carbogen breathing and nicotinamide (ARCON) can correct this adverse outcome in patients with head and neck cancer. The purpose of this study was to validate this observation based on data from a randomized trial. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Of 345 patients with cT2-4 laryngeal cancer, 174 were randomly assigned to accelerated radiotherapy and 171 to ARCON. Hemoglobin levels, measured before treatment, were defined as low when <7.5 mmol/L for women and <8.5 mmol/L for men. The hypoxia marker pimonidazole was used to assess the oxygenation status in tumor biopsies. Data were analyzed 2 years after inclusion of the last patient. RESULTS: Pretreatment hemoglobin levels were available and below normal in 27 of 173 (16%) accelerated radiotherapy and 27 of 167 (16%) ARCON patients. In patients with normal pretreatment, hemoglobin levels treatment with ARCON had no significant effect on 5-year loco-regional control (LRC, 79% versus 75%; P = 0.44) and disease-free survival (DFS, 75% vs. 70%; P = 0.46) compared with accelerated radiotherapy. However, in patients with low pretreatment, hemoglobin levels ARCON significantly improved 5-year LRC (79% vs. 53%; P = 0.03) and DFS (68% vs. 45%; P = 0.04). In multivariate analysis including other prognostic factors, pretreatment hemoglobin remained prognostic for LRC and DFS in the accelerated radiotherapy treatment arm. No correlation between pretreatment hemoglobin levels and pimonidazole uptake was observed. CONCLUSION: Results from the randomized phase III trial support previous observations that ARCON has the potential to correct the poor outcome of cancer patients with anemia (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00147732).
