JPEG steganography with particle swarm optimization accelerated by AVX

    Get PDF
Digital steganography aims at hiding secret messages in digital data transmitted over insecure channels. The JPEG format is prevalent in digital communication, and images are often used as cover objects in digital steganography. Optimization methods can improve the properties of images with embedded secret but introduce additional computational complexity to their processing. AVX instructions available in modern CPUs are, in this work, used to accelerate data parallel operations that are part of image steganography with advanced optimizations.Web of Science328art. no. e544

    Meta-learning computational intelligence architectures

In computational intelligence, the term \u27memetic algorithm\u27 has come to be associated with the algorithmic pairing of a global search method with a local search method. In a sociological context, a \u27meme\u27 has been loosely defined as a unit of cultural information, the social analog of genes for individuals. Both of these definitions are inadequate, as \u27memetic algorithm\u27 is too specific, and ultimately a misnomer, as much as a \u27meme\u27 is defined too generally to be of scientific use. In this dissertation the notion of memes and meta-learning is extended from a computational viewpoint and the purpose, definitions, design guidelines and architecture for effective meta-learning are explored. The background and structure of meta-learning architectures is discussed, incorporating viewpoints from psychology, sociology, computational intelligence, and engineering. The benefits and limitations of meme-based learning are demonstrated through two experimental case studies -- Meta-Learning Genetic Programming and Meta- Learning Traveling Salesman Problem Optimization. Additionally, the development and properties of several new algorithms are detailed, inspired by the previous case-studies. With applications ranging from cognitive science to machine learning, meta-learning has the potential to provide much-needed stimulation to the field of computational intelligence by providing a framework for higher order learning --Abstract, page iii

A Brief Review on Mathematical Tools Applicable to Quantum Computing for Modelling and Optimization Problems in Engineering

Since its emergence, quantum computing has enabled a wide spectrum of new possibilities and advantages, including its efficiency in accelerating computational processes exponentially. This has directed much research towards completely novel ways of solving a wide variety of engineering problems, especially through describing quantum versions of many mathematical tools such as Fourier and Laplace transforms, differential equations, systems of linear equations, and optimization techniques, among others. Exploration and development in this direction will revolutionize the world of engineering. In this manuscript, we review the state of the art of these emerging techniques from the perspective of quantum computer development and performance optimization, with a focus on the most common mathematical tools that support engineering applications. This review focuses on the application of these mathematical tools to quantum computer development and performance improvement/optimization. It also identifies the challenges and limitations related to the exploitation of quantum computing and outlines the main opportunities for future contributions. This review aims at offering a valuable reference for researchers in fields of engineering that are likely to turn to quantum computing for solutions. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-07-01-020 Full Text: PD

Augmented tour construction heuristics for the travelling salesman problem

    Get PDF
Tour construction heuristics serve as fundamental techniques in optimizing the routes of a traveling salesman. These heuristics remain significant as foundational methods for generating initial solutions to the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), facilitating subsequent applications of tour improvement heuristics. These heuristics effectively comprise the iterative application of city node selection and insertion. However, thus far, no attempts have been made to enhance the basic structure of tour construction heuristics to bring a better initial solution for the advanced heuristics. This study aims to enhance tour construction heuristics without compromising their theoretical complexity. Specifically, an iterative step of partial tour deconstruction has been introduced to the existing heuristics. This additional step has been implemented and evaluated with three highly performing tour construction heuristics: the farthest insertion heuristic, the max difference insertion heuristic, and the fast max difference insertion heuristic. The results demonstrate that augmenting these heuristics with the partial tour deconstruction step improves the best, worst, and average solutions while preserving their theoretical complexit

Quantum annealing for vehicle routing and scheduling problems

Metaheuristic approaches to solving combinatorial optimization problems have many attractions. They sidestep the issue of combinatorial explosion; they return good results; they are often conceptually simple and straight forward to implement. There are also shortcomings. Optimal solutions are not guaranteed; choosing the metaheuristic which best fits a problem is a matter of experimentation; and conceptual differences between metaheuristics make absolute comparisons of performance difficult. There is also the difficulty of configuration of the algorithm - the process of identifying precise values for the parameters which control the optimization process. Quantum annealing is a metaheuristic which is the quantum counterpart of the well known classical Simulated Annealing algorithm for combinatorial optimization problems. This research investigates the application of quantum annealing to the Vehicle Routing Problem, a difficult problem of practical significance within industries such as logistics and workforce scheduling. The work devises spin encoding schemes for routing and scheduling problem domains, enabling an effective quantum annealing algorithm which locates new solutions to widely used benchmarks. The performance of the metaheuristic is further improved by the development of an enhanced tuning approach using fitness clouds as behaviour models. The algorithm is shown to be further enhanced by taking advantage of multiprocessor environments, using threading techniques to parallelize the optimization workload. The work also shows quantum annealing applied successfully in an industrial setting to generate solutions to complex scheduling problems, results which created extra savings over an incumbent optimization technique.
