Learning Contact-Rich Manipulation Skills with Guided Policy Search
Autonomous learning of object manipulation skills can enable robots to
acquire rich behavioral repertoires that scale to the variety of objects found
in the real world. However, current motion skill learning methods typically
restrict the behavior to a compact, low-dimensional representation, limiting
its expressiveness and generality. In this paper, we extend a recently
developed policy search method \cite{la-lnnpg-14} and use it to learn a range
of dynamic manipulation behaviors with highly general policy representations,
without using known models or example demonstrations. Our approach learns a set
of trajectories for the desired motion skill by using iteratively refitted
time-varying linear models, and then unifies these trajectories into a single
control policy that can generalize to new situations. To enable this method to
run on a real robot, we introduce several improvements that reduce the sample
count and automate parameter selection. We show that our method can acquire
fast, fluent behaviors after only minutes of interaction time, and can learn
robust controllers for complex tasks, including putting together a toy
airplane, stacking tight-fitting lego blocks, placing wooden rings onto
tight-fitting pegs, inserting a shoe tree into a shoe, and screwing bottle caps
onto bottles
Composable Deep Reinforcement Learning for Robotic Manipulation
Model-free deep reinforcement learning has been shown to exhibit good
performance in domains ranging from video games to simulated robotic
manipulation and locomotion. However, model-free methods are known to perform
poorly when the interaction time with the environment is limited, as is the
case for most real-world robotic tasks. In this paper, we study how maximum
entropy policies trained using soft Q-learning can be applied to real-world
robotic manipulation. The application of this method to real-world manipulation
is facilitated by two important features of soft Q-learning. First, soft
Q-learning can learn multimodal exploration strategies by learning policies
represented by expressive energy-based models. Second, we show that policies
learned with soft Q-learning can be composed to create new policies, and that
the optimality of the resulting policy can be bounded in terms of the
divergence between the composed policies. This compositionality provides an
especially valuable tool for real-world manipulation, where constructing new
policies by composing existing skills can provide a large gain in efficiency
over training from scratch. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that soft
Q-learning is substantially more sample efficient than prior model-free deep
reinforcement learning methods, and that compositionality can be performed for

One-Shot Learning of Manipulation Skills with Online Dynamics Adaptation and Neural Network Priors
One of the key challenges in applying reinforcement learning to complex
robotic control tasks is the need to gather large amounts of experience in
order to find an effective policy for the task at hand. Model-based
reinforcement learning can achieve good sample efficiency, but requires the
ability to learn a model of the dynamics that is good enough to learn an
effective policy. In this work, we develop a model-based reinforcement learning
algorithm that combines prior knowledge from previous tasks with online
adaptation of the dynamics model. These two ingredients enable highly
sample-efficient learning even in regimes where estimating the true dynamics is
very difficult, since the online model adaptation allows the method to locally
compensate for unmodeled variation in the dynamics. We encode the prior
experience into a neural network dynamics model, adapt it online by
progressively refitting a local linear model of the dynamics, and use model
predictive control to plan under these dynamics. Our experimental results show
that this approach can be used to solve a variety of complex robotic
manipulation tasks in just a single attempt, using prior data from other
manipulation behaviors
Learning cloth manipulation with demonstrations
Recent advances in Deep Reinforcement learning and computational capabilities of GPUs have led to variety of research being conducted in the learning side of robotics. The main aim being that of making autonomous robots that are capable of learning how to solve a task on their own with minimal requirement for engineering on the planning, vision, or control side. Efforts have been made to learn the manipulation of rigid objects through the help of human demonstrations, specifically in the tasks such as stacking of multiple blocks on top of each other, inserting a pin into a hole, etc. These Deep RL algorithms successfully learn how to complete a task involving the manipulation of rigid objects, but autonomous manipulation of textile objects such as clothes through Deep RL algorithms is still not being studied in the community.
The main objectives of this work involve, 1) implementing the state of the art Deep RL algorithms for rigid object manipulation and getting a deep understanding of the working of these various algorithms, 2) Creating an open-source simulation environment for simulating textile objects such as clothes, 3) Designing Deep RL algorithms for learning autonomous manipulation of textile objects through demonstrations.Peer ReviewedPreprin
Learning Manipulation under Physics Constraints with Visual Perception
Understanding physical phenomena is a key competence that enables humans and
animals to act and interact under uncertain perception in previously unseen
environments containing novel objects and their configurations. In this work,
we consider the problem of autonomous block stacking and explore solutions to
learning manipulation under physics constraints with visual perception inherent
to the task. Inspired by the intuitive physics in humans, we first present an
end-to-end learning-based approach to predict stability directly from
appearance, contrasting a more traditional model-based approach with explicit
3D representations and physical simulation. We study the model's behavior
together with an accompanied human subject test. It is then integrated into a
real-world robotic system to guide the placement of a single wood block into
the scene without collapsing existing tower structure. To further automate the
process of consecutive blocks stacking, we present an alternative approach
where the model learns the physics constraint through the interaction with the
environment, bypassing the dedicated physics learning as in the former part of
this work. In particular, we are interested in the type of tasks that require
the agent to reach a given goal state that may be different for every new
trial. Thereby we propose a deep reinforcement learning framework that learns

Towards Advanced Robotic Manipulations for Nuclear Decommissioning
Despite enormous remote handling requirements, remarkably very few robots are being used by the nuclear industry. Most of the remote handling tasks are still performed manually, using conventional mechanical master‐slave devices. The few robotic manipulators deployed are directly tele‐operated in rudimentary ways, with almost no autonomy or even a pre‐programmed motion. In addition, majority of these robots are under‐sensored (i.e. with no proprioception), which prevents them to use for automatic tasks. In this context, primarily this chapter discusses the human operator performance in accomplishing heavy‐duty remote handling tasks in hazardous environments such as nuclear decommissioning. Multiple factors are evaluated to analyse the human operators’ performance and workload. Also, direct human tele‐operation is compared against human‐supervised semi‐autonomous control exploiting computer vision. Secondarily, a vision‐guided solution towards enabling advanced control and automating the under‐sensored robots is presented. Maintaining the coherence with real nuclear scenario, the experiments are conducted in the lab environment and results are discussed
