    Human Motion Trajectory Prediction: A Survey

    With growing numbers of intelligent autonomous systems in human environments, the ability of such systems to perceive, understand and anticipate human behavior becomes increasingly important. Specifically, predicting future positions of dynamic agents and planning considering such predictions are key tasks for self-driving vehicles, service robots and advanced surveillance systems. This paper provides a survey of human motion trajectory prediction. We review, analyze and structure a large selection of work from different communities and propose a taxonomy that categorizes existing methods based on the motion modeling approach and level of contextual information used. We provide an overview of the existing datasets and performance metrics.     Online Mapping-Based Navigation System for Wheeled Mobile Robot in Road Following and Roundabout

    A road mapping and feature extraction for mobile robot navigation in road roundabout and road following environments is presented in this chapter. In this work, the online mapping of mobile robot employing the utilization of sensor fusion technique is used to extract the road characteristics that will be used with path planning algorithm to enable the robot to move from a certain start position to predetermined goal, such as road curbs, road borders, and roundabout. The sensor fusion is performed using many sensors, namely, laser range finder, camera, and odometry, which are combined on a new wheeled mobile robot prototype to determine the best optimum path of the robot and localize it within its environments. The local maps are developed using an image’s preprocessing and processing algorithms and an artificial threshold of LRF signal processing to recognize the road environment parameters such as road curbs, width, and roundabout. The path planning in the road environments is accomplished using a novel approach so called Laser Simulator to find the trajectory in the local maps developed by sensor fusion. Results show the capability of the wheeled mobile robot to effectively recognize the road environments, build a local mapping, and find the path in both road following and roundabout

    International audienceThis article tackles the problem of the autonomous navigation and coordination of multiple driverless vehicles for the transport of persons or goods in outdoor environments. The system composed of fully automated road vehicles, capable of providing an effective transportation service, was recently tested at the city of La Rochelle. This same system was further improved, and a new demonstration was performed at Inria Rocquencourt, in order to demonstrate the validity of the concepts for a coordinated navigation in the presence of ambiguous and conflictual situations in a mixed environment. The originality of the approach relies on the use of new cooperative concepts and their combination with advanced perception tasks operating simultaneously on several robots.     Navigation of Autonomous Light Vehicles Using an Optimal Trajectory Planning Algorithm

    [EN] Autonomous navigation is a complex problem that involves different tasks, such as location of the mobile robot in the scenario, robotic mapping, generating the trajectory, navigating from the initial point to the target point, detecting objects it may encounter in its path, etc. This paper presents a new optimal trajectory planning algorithm that allows the assessment of the energy efficiency of autonomous light vehicles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature that this is carried out by minimizing the travel time while considering the vehicle's dynamic behavior, its limitations, and with the capability of avoiding obstacles and constraining energy consumption. This enables the automotive industry to design environmentally sustainable strategies towards compliance with governmental greenhouse gas (GHG) emission regulations and for climate change mitigation and adaptation policies. The reduction in energy consumption also allows companies to stay competitive in the marketplace. The vehicle navigation control is efficiently implemented through a middleware of component-based software development (CBSD) based on a Robot Operating System (ROS) package. It boosts the reuse of software components and the development of systems from other existing systems. Therefore, it allows the avoidance of complex control software architectures to integrate the different hardware and software components. The global maps are created by scanning the environment with FARO 3D and 2D SICK laser sensors. The proposed algorithm presents a low computational cost and has been implemented as a new module of distributed architecture. It has been integrated into the ROS package to achieve real time autonomous navigation of the vehicle.     A Survey on Aerial Swarm Robotics

    The use of aerial swarms to solve real-world problems has been increasing steadily, accompanied by falling prices and improving performance of communication, sensing, and processing hardware. The commoditization of hardware has reduced unit costs, thereby lowering the barriers to entry to the field of aerial swarm robotics. A key enabling technology for swarms is the family of algorithms that allow the individual members of the swarm to communicate and allocate tasks amongst themselves, plan their trajectories, and coordinate their flight in such a way that the overall objectives of the swarm are achieved efficiently. These algorithms, often organized in a hierarchical fashion, endow the swarm with autonomy at every level, and the role of a human operator can be reduced, in principle, to interactions at a higher level without direct intervention. This technology depends on the clever and innovative application of theoretical tools from control and estimation. This paper reviews the state of the art of these theoretical tools, specifically focusing on how they have been developed for, and applied to, aerial swarms. Aerial swarms differ from swarms of ground-based vehicles in two respects: they operate in a three-dimensional space and the dynamics of individual vehicles adds an extra layer of complexity. We review dynamic modeling and conditions for stability and controllability that are essential in order to achieve cooperative flight and distributed sensing. The main sections of this paper focus on major results covering trajectory generation, task allocation, adversarial control, distributed sensing, monitoring, and mapping. Wherever possible, we indicate how the physics and subsystem technologies of aerial robots are brought to bear on these individual areas

    System Development of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle and Implementation of an Autonomous Navigation Module in a Mine Environment

    There are numerous benefits to the insights gained from the exploration and exploitation of underground mines. There are also great risks and challenges involved, such as accidents that have claimed many lives. To avoid these accidents, inspections of the large mines were carried out by the miners, which is not always economically feasible and puts the safety of the inspectors at risk. Despite the progress in the development of robotic systems, autonomous navigation, localization and mapping algorithms, these environments remain particularly demanding for these systems. The successful implementation of the autonomous unmanned system will allow mine workers to autonomously determine the structural integrity of the roof and pillars through the generation of high-fidelity 3D maps. The generation of the maps will allow the miners to rapidly respond to any increasing hazards with proactive measures such as: sending workers to build/rebuild support structure to prevent accidents. The objective of this research is the development, implementation and testing of a robust unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) that will operate in mine environments for extended periods of time. To achieve this, a custom skid-steer four-wheeled UGV is designed to operate in these challenging underground mine environments. To autonomously navigate these environments, the UGV employs the use of a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and tactical grade inertial measurement unit (IMU) for the localization and mapping through a tightly-coupled LiDAR Inertial Odometry via Smoothing and Mapping framework (LIO-SAM). The autonomous navigation module was implemented based upon the Fast likelihood-based collision avoidance with an extension to human-guided navigation and a terrain traversability analysis framework. In order to successfully operate and generate high-fidelity 3D maps, the system was rigorously tested in different environments and terrain to verify its robustness. To assess the capabilities, several localization, mapping and autonomous navigation missions were carried out in a coal mine environment. These tests allowed for the verification and tuning of the system to be able to successfully autonomously navigate and generate high-fidelity maps
