    Numerical investigation on aerodynamic noises of the lateral window in vehicles

    The paper firstly conducted a numerical simulation for flow fields and aerodynamic noises of the lateral window region in vehicles, and verified its correctness using the experimental test. Numerical simulation shows that: A pillar has a complicated shape and large corner, so that airflows will be separated here. An eddy structure is caused in the lateral window region and develops along the A pillar to generate serious pressure pulsations. A low pressure region is formed behind the A pillar. Obvious airflow separation regions are in the A pillar, rear view mirrors, wheels and wheel chambers. These airflow separation regions are typical positions causing aerodynamic noises. Additionally, large separated regions are located at the tail part of the vehicle, which is a main reason for causing the aerodynamic resistance. Intensity and velocity of eddies near the lateral window surface are relatively large, while its intensity near edges of the rear view mirror is weak. The shape of eddies extends along the flow direction to be an oval shape. The separated and broken eddies are sources for causing pressure pulsations. According to sound pressures of observation points, it can be also found that the separated eddy is a main reason for causing aerodynamic noises. Sound pressures are low at the right upper corner of lateral windows. In addition, noise distributions on the lateral window become gradually uniform with the increased frequency. In order to reduce flow noises, a bionic saw-tooth structure is applied to A pillars and rear view mirrors. After the bionic structure is introduced, some fluids are adhered to A pillars and rear view mirrors, so that the energy of fluids reaching the lateral window is reduced. In addition, fluids in rear regions of the rear view mirror presented a spiral shape, so that the possibility of fluid diffusion will be also reduced. In the original model, the maximum energy is 57.77, while that in this region with the bionic saw-tooth structures is 55.00. Obviously, the eddy energy is weakened. Compared with the original model, flow noises of all the observation points are reduced to different degrees, and the noise reduction effect is obvious. The results fully prove that this region with bionic saw-teeth in this paper has obvious advantages in noise reduction

    Intelligent Transportation Related Complex Systems and Sensors

    Building around innovative services related to different modes of transport and traffic management, intelligent transport systems (ITS) are being widely adopted worldwide to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation system. They enable users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and smarter decisions on the use of transport networks. Current ITSs are complex systems, made up of several components/sub-systems characterized by time-dependent interactions among themselves. Some examples of these transportation-related complex systems include: road traffic sensors, autonomous/automated cars, smart cities, smart sensors, virtual sensors, traffic control systems, smart roads, logistics systems, smart mobility systems, and many others that are emerging from niche areas. The efficient operation of these complex systems requires: i) efficient solutions to the issues of sensors/actuators used to capture and control the physical parameters of these systems, as well as the quality of data collected from these systems; ii) tackling complexities using simulations and analytical modelling techniques; and iii) applying optimization techniques to improve the performance of these systems.     Effects of errorless learning on the acquisition of velopharyngeal movement control

    Session 1pSC - Speech Communication: Cross-Linguistic Studies of Speech Sound Learning of the Languages of Hong Kong (Poster Session)The implicit motor learning literature suggests a benefit for learning if errors are minimized during practice. This study investigated whether the same principle holds for learning velopharyngeal movement control. Normal speaking participants learned to produce hypernasal speech in either an errorless learning condition (in which the possibility for errors was limited) or an errorful learning condition (in which the possibility for errors was not limited). Nasality level of the participants’ speech was measured by nasometer and reflected by nasalance scores (in %). Errorless learners practiced producing hypernasal speech with a threshold nasalance score of 10% at the beginning, which gradually increased to a threshold of 50% at the end. The same set of threshold targets were presented to errorful learners but in a reversed order. Errors were defined by the proportion of speech with a nasalance score below the threshold. The results showed that, relative to errorful learners, errorless learners displayed fewer errors (50.7% vs. 17.7%) and a higher mean nasalance score (31.3% vs. 46.7%) during the acquisition phase. Furthermore, errorless learners outperformed errorful learners in both retention and novel transfer tests.     Decoding Neural Signals with Computational Models: A Systematic Review of Invasive BMI

    There are significant milestones in modern human's civilization in which mankind stepped into a different level of life with a new spectrum of possibilities and comfort. From fire-lighting technology and wheeled wagons to writing, electricity and the Internet, each one changed our lives dramatically. In this paper, we take a deep look into the invasive Brain Machine Interface (BMI), an ambitious and cutting-edge technology which has the potential to be another important milestone in human civilization. Not only beneficial for patients with severe medical conditions, the invasive BMI technology can significantly impact different technologies and almost every aspect of human's life. We review the biological and engineering concepts that underpin the implementation of BMI applications. There are various essential techniques that are necessary for making invasive BMI applications a reality. We review these through providing an analysis of (i) possible applications of invasive BMI technology, (ii) the methods and devices for detecting and decoding brain signals, as well as (iii) possible options for stimulating signals into human's brain.     Bridge Structrural Health Monitoring Using a Cyber-Physical System Framework

    Highway bridges are critical infrastructure elements supporting commercial and personal traffic. However, bridge deterioration coupled with insufficient funding for bridge maintenance remain a chronic problem faced by the United States. With the emergence of wireless sensor networks (WSN), structural health monitoring (SHM) has gained increasing attention over the last decade as a viable means of assessing bridge structural conditions. While intensive research has been conducted on bridge SHM, few studies have clearly demonstrated the value of SHM to bridge owners, especially using real-world implementation in operational bridges. This thesis first aims to enhance existing bridge SHM implementations by developing a cyber-physical system (CPS) framework that integrates multiple SHM systems with traffic cameras and weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations located along the same corridor. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed CPS, a 20-mile segment of the northbound I-275 highway in Michigan is instrumented with four traffic cameras, two bridge SHM systems and a WIM station. Real-time truck detection algorithms are deployed to intelligently trigger the SHM systems for data collection during large truck events. Such a triggering approach can improve data acquisition efficiency by up to 70% (as compared to schedule-based data collection). Leveraging computer vision-based truck re-identification techniques applied to videos from the traffic cameras along the corridor, a two-stage pipeline is proposed to fuse bridge input data (i.e. truck loads as measured by the WIM station) and output data (i.e. bridge responses to a given truck load). From August 2017 to April 2019, over 20,000 truck events have been captured by the CPS. To the author’s best knowledge, the CPS implementation is the first of its kind in the nation and offers large volume of heterogeneous input-output data thereby opening new opportunities for novel data-driven bridge condition assessment methods. Built upon the developed CPS framework, the second half of the thesis focuses on use of the data in real-world bridge asset management applications. Long-term bridge strain response data is used to investigate and model composite action behavior exhibited in slab-on-girder highway bridges. Partial composite action is observed and quantified over negative bending regions of the bridge through the monitoring of slip strain at the girder-deck interface. It is revealed that undesired composite action over negative bending regions might be a cause of deck deterioration. The analysis performed on modeling composite action is a first in studying composite behavior in operational bridges with in-situ SHM measurements. Second, a data-driven analytical method is proposed to derive site-specific parameters such as dynamic load allowance and unit influence lines for bridge load rating using the input-output data. The resulting rating factors more rationally account for the bridge's systematic behavior leading to more accurate rating of a bridge's load-carrying capacity. Third, the proposed CPS framework is shown capable of measuring highway traffic loads. The paired WIM and bridge response data is used for training a learning-based bridge WIM system where truck weight characteristics such as axle weights are derived directly using corresponding bridge response measurements.     Intelligent Computational Transportation

    Transportation is commonplace around our world. Numerous researchers dedicate great efforts to vast transportation research topics. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate and address a couple of transportation problems with respect to geographic discretization, pavement surface automatic examination, and traffic ow simulation, using advanced computational technologies. Many applications require a discretized 2D geographic map such that local information can be accessed efficiently. For example, map matching, which aligns a sequence of observed positions to a real-world road network, needs to find all the nearby road segments to the individual positions. To this end, the map is discretized by cells and each cell retains a list of road segments coincident with this cell. An efficient method is proposed to form such lists for the cells without costly overlapping tests. Furthermore, the method can be easily extended to 3D scenarios for fast triangle mesh voxelization. Pavement surface distress conditions are critical inputs for quantifying roadway infrastructure serviceability. Existing computer-aided automatic examination techniques are mainly based on 2D image analysis or 3D georeferenced data set. The disadvantage of information losses or extremely high costs impedes their effectiveness iv and applicability. In this study, a cost-effective Kinect-based approach is proposed for 3D pavement surface reconstruction and cracking recognition. Various cracking measurements such as alligator cracking, traverse cracking, longitudinal cracking, etc., are identified and recognized for their severity examinations based on associated geometrical features. Smart transportation is one of the core components in modern urbanization processes. Under this context, the Connected Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) system presents a promising solution towards the enhanced traffic safety and mobility through state-of-the-art wireless communications and autonomous driving techniques. Due to the different nature between the CAVs and the conventional Human- Driven-Vehicles (HDVs), it is believed that CAV-enabled transportation systems will revolutionize the existing understanding of network-wide traffic operations and re-establish traffic ow theory. This study presents a new continuum dynamics model for the future CAV-enabled traffic system, realized by encapsulating mutually-coupled vehicle interactions using virtual internal and external forces.
