Over the years, consumer requirements for Quality of Service (QoS) has been growing exponentially. Recently, the ratification process of newly IEEE 802.11ad amendment to IEEE 802.11 was finished. The IEEE 802.11ad is the newly con-sumer wireless communication approach, which will gain high spot on the 5G evolution. Major players in wireless market, such as Qualcomm already are inte-grating solutions from unlicensed band, like IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11ad into their architecture of LTE PRO (the next evolutionary step for 5G networking) (Qualcomm 2013; Parker et al. 2015). As the demand is growing both in enter-prise wireless networking and home consumer markets. Consumers started to no-tice the performance degradation due to overcrowded unlicensed bands. The un-licensed bands such as 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz are widely used for up-to-date IEEE 802.11n/ac technologies with upcoming IEEE 802.11ax. However, overusage of the available frequency leads to severe interference issue and consequences in to-tal system performance degradation, currently existing wireless medium access method can not sustain the increasing intereference and thus wireless needs a new methods of wireless medium access. The main focal point of this dissertation is to improve wireless performance in dense wireless networks. In dissertation both the conceptual and multi-band wireless medium access methods are considered both from theoretical point of view and experimental usage.
The introduction chapter presents the investigated problem and it’s objects of research as well as importance of dissertation and it’s scientific novelty in the unlicensed wireless field.
Chapter 1 revises used literature. Existing and up-to-date state-of-the-art so-lution are reviewed, evaluated and key point advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. Conclusions are drawn at the end of the chapter.
Chapter 2 describes theoretical analysis of wireless medium access protocols and the new wireless medium access method. During analysis theoretical simula-tions are performed. Conclusions are drawn at the end of the chapter.
Chapter 3 is focused on the experimental components evaluation for multi-band system, which would be in line with theoretical concept investigations. The experimental results, showed that components of multi-band system can gain sig-nificant performance increase when compared to the existing IEEE 802.11n/ac wireless systems.
General conclusions are drawn after analysis of measurement results
Optimization of the interoperability and dynamic spectrum management in mobile communications systems beyond 3G
The future wireless ecosystem will heterogeneously integrate a number of overlapped Radio
Access Technologies (RATs) through a common platform. A major challenge arising from the
heterogeneous network is the Radio Resource Management (RRM) strategy. A Common RRM
(CRRM) module is needed in order to provide a step toward network convergence. This work
aims at implementing HSDPA and IEEE 802.11e CRRM evaluation tools.
Innovative enhancements to IEEE 802.11e have been pursued on the application of cross-layer
signaling to improve Quality of Service (QoS) delivery, and provide more efficient usage of
radio resources by adapting such parameters as arbitrary interframe spacing, a differentiated
backoff procedure and transmission opportunities, as well as acknowledgment policies (where
the most advised block size was found to be 12). Besides, the proposed cross-layer algorithm
dynamically changes the size of the Arbitration Interframe Space (AIFS) and the Contention
Window (CW) duration according to a periodically obtained fairness measure based on the Signal
to Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) and transmission time, a delay constraint and the
collision rate of a given machine. The throughput was increased in 2 Mb/s for all the values of
the load that have been tested whilst satisfying more users than with the original standard. For
the ad hoc mode an analytical model was proposed that allows for investigating collision free
communications in a distributed environment.
The addition of extra frequency spectrum bands and an integrated CRRM that enables spectrum
aggregation was also addressed. RAT selection algorithms allow for determining the gains obtained
by using WiFi as a backup network for HSDPA. The proposed RAT selection algorithm
is based on the load of each system, without the need for a complex management system. Simulation
results show that, in such scenario, for high system loads, exploiting localization while
applying load suitability optimization based algorithm, can provide a marginal gain of up to
450 kb/s in the goodput. HSDPA was also studied in the context of cognitive radio, by considering
two co-located BSs operating at different frequencies (in the 2 and 5 GHz bands) in the
same cell. The system automatically chooses the frequency to serve each user with an optimal
General Multi-Band Scheduling (GMBS) algorithm. It was shown that enabling the access to
a secondary band, by using the proposed Integrated CRRM (iCRRM), an almost constant gain
near 30 % was obtained in the throughput with the proposed optimal solution, compared to a
system where users are first allocated in one of the two bands and later not able to handover
between the bands. In this context, future cognitive radio scenarios where IEEE 802.11e ad hoc
modes will be essential for giving access to the mobile users have been proposed
Performance Optimization in Wireless Local Area Networks
Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) are becoming more and more important
for providing wireless broadband access. Applications and networking
scenarios evolve continuously and in an unpredictable way, attracting the
attention of academic institutions, research centers and industry. For designing
an e cient WLAN is necessary to carefully plan coverage and to
optimize the network design parameters, such as AP locations, channel assignment,
power allocation, MAC protocol, routing algorithm, etc... In this
thesis we approach performance optimization in WLAN at di erent layer
of the OSI model. Our rst approach is at Network layer. Starting from
a Hybrid System modeling the
ow of tra c in the network, we propose a
Hybrid Linear Varying Parameter algorithm for identifying the link quality
that could be used as metric in routing algorithms. Go down to Data Link,
it is well known that CSMA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access) protocols exhibit
very poor performance in case of multi-hop transmissions, because of
inter-link interference due to imperfect carrier sensing. We propose two novel
algorithms, that are combining Time Division Multiple Access for grouping
contending nodes in non-interfering sets with Carrier Sense Multiple Access
for managing the channel access behind a set. In the rst solution, a game
theoretical study of intra slot contention is introduced, in the second solution
we apply an optimization algorithm to nd the optimal degree between
contention and scheduling. Both the presented solutions improve the network
performance with respect to CSMA and TDMA algorithms. Finally we
analyze the network performance at Physical Layer. In case of WLAN, we
can only use three orthogonal channels in an unlicensed spectrum, so the frequency
assignments should be subject to frequent adjustments, according to
the time-varying amount of interference which is not under the control of the
provider. This problem make necessary the introduction of an automatic network
planning solution, since a network administrator cannot continuously
monitor and correct the interference conditions su ered in the network. We
propose a novel protocol based on a distributed machine learning mechanism
in which the nodes choose, automatically and autonomously in each time
slot, the optimal channel for transmitting through a weighted combination
of protocols
Will SDN be part of 5G?
For many, this is no longer a valid question and the case is considered
settled with SDN/NFV (Software Defined Networking/Network Function
Virtualization) providing the inevitable innovation enablers solving many
outstanding management issues regarding 5G. However, given the monumental task
of softwarization of radio access network (RAN) while 5G is just around the
corner and some companies have started unveiling their 5G equipment already,
the concern is very realistic that we may only see some point solutions
involving SDN technology instead of a fully SDN-enabled RAN. This survey paper
identifies all important obstacles in the way and looks at the state of the art
of the relevant solutions. This survey is different from the previous surveys
on SDN-based RAN as it focuses on the salient problems and discusses solutions
proposed within and outside SDN literature. Our main focus is on fronthaul,
backward compatibility, supposedly disruptive nature of SDN deployment,
business cases and monetization of SDN related upgrades, latency of general
purpose processors (GPP), and additional security vulnerabilities,
softwarization brings along to the RAN. We have also provided a summary of the
architectural developments in SDN-based RAN landscape as not all work can be
covered under the focused issues. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on
the state of the art of SDN-based RAN and clearly points out the gaps in the
technology.Comment: 33 pages, 10 figure
